【原文】

W: London taxi drivers know the capital like the back of their hands, for they all have to go through a very tough training period before getting a special taxi driving license. During this period, which can take from 2 to 4 years, the learner taxi driver has to learn the most direct route to every single road and to every important building in London. Learner drivers are tested several times during their training period by government officers. Their exams are a terrible experience. The officers ask you, “How do you get from Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London?” And you have to take them there in a direct line. When you get to the tower, they will quickly move on to the next question. After 5 or 6 questions, they will just say “see you in two months’ time” and then you know the exam is over. Learner drivers are not allowed to work and earn money as drivers. The training can cost quite a lot because learners have to pay their own expenses for the tests and a medical exam.

【题目】 A single cigarette sold on a street corner may not cost a lot; however, the whole costs of smoking are huge.

First, consider the cost of human life. About 10 people die of a tobacco-related disease every minute. Most of these preventable deaths happen in low-income and middle-income countries. The World Bank says each of these countries has a total national income of less than $ 12,746.

The World Health Organization says tobacco kills 6 million people yearly -a number that is expected to rise to 8 million by 2030 unless immediate action is taken.

But smoking costs more than the life of a person. It can affect the health of the whole country. The World Health Organization says low-income countries depend heavily on taxes from cigarettes. They use the money, in part, to pay the costs of health care for tobacco-related diseases.

But the illegal trade in tobacco products is further testing the economies of low-income countries. WHO officials say the illegal trade earns about $ 31 billion every year.

Douglas Bettcher is the director of the W HO s Department for the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases. He calls the illegal trade a monster with many heads. He says the trade enables young people to buy cigarettes at low prices, become addicted to tobacco and suffer from serious health problems. It also increases crime and reduces taxes.

The World Health Organization is strongly suggesting that the U. N. member states sign an agreement to end the illegal trade in tobacco products. Eight countries have agreed to the agreement. But the agreement of 32 other countries is still needed for it to become an international law.

If the agreement succeeds, governments could put people who trade illegal tobacco products in prison-another cost to countries budgets.

1Where are people dying of a tobacco related disease mostly from?

A.Developed countries.B.Old countries.

C.Underdeveloped countries.D.New countries.

2Which of the following about the whole costs of smoking is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Destroying the environment.

B.Being harmful to human life.

C.Affecting the whole country’s economy.

D.Causing the illegal trade.

3What’s the main idea of Paragraph 6?

A.Some action has been taken by the WHO.

B.The illegal trade in tobacco products is harmful.

C.Young people who are addicted to smoking may commit a crime.

D.An agreement to end the illegal trade in tobacco products is being signed.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Smoking Costs More than You Think

B.Different Ways to Stop Smoking

C.The Illegal Trade in Tobacco Products

D.Immediate Action to Stop Smoking

【题目】 The cracked (有裂缝的) step four years ago was the start of it. That day, I awoke tired—the children were tiny and needing so much—and I had a golden afternoon of rest ahead, my mother stepping in to allow me to catch up on my sleep. I dropped them off and drove home—the sun shining and my bed signaling. As I was about to enter the house, I caught sight of a deep crack beneath my feet.

Without thinking, I turned around, walked back to the car and drove to a DIY store. Four hours later, I had all the tools, had mixed my own cement (水泥), filled in the crack and repaired the foundation. Perfect. As I stood up to take a photo of my handiwork, I realized that I was trembling. I’d forgotten my shot at a nice long nap, and my children were already on their way home. That sleep... that promise to self was broken, because I had focused, instead, on the crack in the step.

Suddenly, everything started to hurt. My head, my throat, my back. I couldn’t stop shaking. What earned then is that when we break the promises we make to our bodies they will not be silenced. This is when we overwork and overthink to the point of breaking down. Ironically (讽刺地), for many of us, it is only when we have no choice— when we fall ill—that we learn to listen. For me, when that crack ended in a hospital stay which sent me to bed for two unmoving weeks while my body worked to clear two different infections, the lesson is ever present. I did it to myself—a whole twisted spin on DIY.

Sadly it took another two ridiculous DIY projects to finally get through. The cracks will never be fully filled. Focus, then, on your own inner core the feeding of that light, that fire and that strength.

1What made the author so sleepy in the first place?

A.Taking care of the kids.B.Visiting her mother.

C.Doing the housework.D.Dealing with DIY projects.

2How did the author feel as soon as she finished her repair work?

A.Regretful.B.Upset.

C.Proud.D.Thankful.

3What can be implied from Paragraph 3?

A.Our health is ignored deliberately.

B.Our body will respond to what we do.

C.The author took her mother’s advice.

D.The author stayed in hospital for two weeks.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To present a way to fill a crack.

B.To show the danger of DIY.

C.To stress the importance of sleep.

D.To encourage focusing on oneself.

And, of course, it can only happen in the afternoon! Afternoon tea, 4 (design) as a light snack to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, dates back to the 1840s. It went on to become a 5 (fashion) social occasion for the upper classes.

Now there is a resurgence (复苏) in its 6 (popular) in the UK and it is available to anyone who can afford it. 7 it can be enjoyed at home, the best way to experience it is at a smart hotel of café. But if you’re thinking of visiting such a place 8 (enjoy) a plate of sweet and tasty treats with a steaming hot brew, remember the rules you must follow to avoid 9 (ask) to leave.

Writer Henry James once noted that “there are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour devoted to the ceremony known as afternoon tea”. I’m sure once you try it, you 10(agree).
