Everybody has to buy or sell things sometimes. Even students, who are usually not very rich, have to learn something about making purchases(买东西) intelligently. As a student you may find, for example that you need to buy a walkman or winter clothing. You may want to buy a television or a used car. Of course, you want to get good value for your money. If you are considering a major purchase, or any purchase, you should remember several important things.

◎Study first, and then decide what you want to buy. You can learn a lot just by reading books and advertisements.

Remember that a high quality product will probably last longer and work better. Of course,

for a superior(优良的) product you are expected to pay more. An inferior product may not give you the same quality, but the price should be low. Perhaps this seems obvious, but you know the quality. Don’t just look at the price. A poor quality product could be expensive. And a valuable one could be on sale at a greatly reduced price.

◎Don’t hurry. Take your time. After you decide what product you want, go to many different stores. If you cannot find the product you want, you may try to order it directly form the factory or ask the store to order it for you.

Look for a good deal. If you wait, you will probably find that your product will go on sale and

you may be able to save 10,20,or even 50 percent of the original price.

◎Finally, before you buy, make sure that the product is guaranteed(质量保证). If you find the lowest possible price, you will generally be happy with your purchase and also keep more money in the bank.

73. What’s the best title for this passage?

    A. What products are of high quality    B. Do shopping wisely as a student

    C. How to save your money           D. Take your time when shopping

74. The underlined word “inferior” (in paragraph 3) probably means “____”.

    A. low in price                     B. produced by a small factory

    C. low in quality                   D. produced by a large factory

75. If you cannot find what you want to buy in the stores, you may____.

    A. wait until it arrives

    B. place an order directly with the factory

    C. save some money in the bank

    D. get your money back from the factory

E
Every year farmers in areas which often suffer flood in Southeast Asia lose millions of tons of rice to high water that kills their crops. That large amount of waste may soon be a thing of the past: SUBIA, a gene discovered by researchers which the International Rice Research Insitule (IRRI) and the University of California, allows rice palnts carrying the gene to live completely under water for two weeks.
Flood – resistant(抗水浸) rice turned up among the 110,000 types of seed stored at the institute. It produced disappointingly low yields(产量) , but scientistis were able to transfer the gene into more bountiful varieties. These have shown promising results in tests by growers in India and Bangladesh over the past two years.
This rice success story would not have been possible without the treasure of genetic diversity hidden in the IRRI’s vault (underground room). As the world faces new agricultural challenge – charging climate, bugs and diseases that have developed resistance(抵抗力) to old defenses – such genetic resources are likely to become increasingly valuable. Fortunately, the IRRI is one of more than 1,000 organizations around the world working to protect crop genes. Most plant species grown for food have an associated bank that stores thousands of samples; seeds of landraces, wild relatives, and varieties that are rare, old, or adapted to very specific envionments. The banks ensure that it will be possible to develop new varieties in the future.
The need for these botanical libraries has its roots in modern agricultural practices. According to the U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization, 75 percent of plant diversity has been lost over the last century. Of more than 30,000 eatable species, humans grow just 200 for food; 60 percent of plant calories in our diet comes from wheat, rice, and corn.
72.Accordint to the second paragraph, what can we learn about the flood – resistant rice?
A.It produces a small amount of rice.
B.Scientists have developed many more varieties of it.
C.Sientists have managed to improve its output.
D.It can produce more rice than the other 110,000 types at the institute.
73.From the passage we can infer that        .
A.the newly – discovered gene will bring hope to the farmers in the areas often suffering flood
B.scientists will not be able to change the fact that rice plants carrying the gene produce low yields
C.the tests by growers in India and Bangladesh were hopeless
D.110,000 types of seed stored at the Institute are flood -  resistant
74.What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The world faces new agricultural challenges.
B.Such genetic resources are likely to become valuable.
C.Scientists set up banks to store thousands of seed samples.
D.We should owe the rice success story to the seed banks.
75.As to the botanical libraries, the writer thinks they are            .
A.useless      B.unnecessary      C.needful     D.needless

E

Every child is unique and has interests and wants that are specific to him or her. As parents of many children, it takes a lot of effort to identify the special qualities of each child and use them to be an effective influence in their young lives. What’s more , parents need to work to guide each child into their place in the family and make sure that the child is content and able to grow as a person.

Establishing  tasks in the home for each child helps  begin to lay  relational boundaries  in place. Each child should have an area  that becomes his or hers to maintain. Household chores (家务活 ) fall into this category. However, an order for answering the phone or doorbell can also be a task.  Reward each accomplished task in small ways like a compliment ( 赞扬). Money is not as  effective as personal attention.

Don’t buy a gift or treat for one without including the others. Even on birthdays give every child a small gift that they can enjoy opening while the birthday child opens his or her pile of gifts or larger gift. It’s not a really pricey thing. Our children never felt left out at the other child’s birthday or special occasion.

When buying clothes or other necessities, it can often be too much of a budget strain ( 紧张) to buy everything for all at once.  Make sure every child understands that their turn will come. If you buy back to school clothes, be certain to have each one a new outfit to wear by the first day of school.  Start early so each child can receive  parental attention before heading out.

Don’t fall into the trap of bragging ( 夸耀) on A’s by a smart or overachieving child and ignoring the C’s of a average child. Encourage them to do their best and brag on their best , not the letter grade received.

74. On birthdays the author would like to_____.

A. give each child a small gift           B. give the birthday child a gift only
