    With my student teaching behind me，I started out at a school in another part of town and was determined not to face another classroom where I didn't have control．Day one I read my new fourth grade the longest list of rules they'd ever heard．I was the teacher．I was running the show．It was the students'job to sit still，listen，and do as they were told．Much to my surprise，they did just that．Three days went by．Two weeks passed．I was in control．
    By the end of September the headmaster was noticing the straight line we maintained while walking．My colleagues praised the class for getting drinks so quietly．Visitors smiled at the straight rows of hard-working，orderly students．I was pleased．
    I might have felt even more successful if I hadn't felt I was burning out fast．I found myself being angry with my students，who just sat there，not fully appreciating everything I was doing for them．
    I shared my frustration with Mr．Greg，who invited me to observe one of his classes．I didn't want to like his class，and at first I didn't have to．My first impression was of loud voices and of students moving around the room at will．However，the longer I stayed，the more I was amazed．Mr．Greg wasn't being"tough as nails，"and yet this wasn't really chaos（混乱） at all．Students were discussing ideas for their own writing with each other．They didn't seem to need controlling---they were controlling themselves．
    "How did you get this to work？"I asked Mr．Greg later that day．"If I gave my kids a time like this，half of them would just sit there and do nothing．"
    "It doesn't always work，"he said，"but most kids will cooperate if you give them enough responsibility and enough freedom．"
    I thought about that long and hard．I thought I had learned that giving a class freedom could only lead to trouble．Responsibility？My students have plenty of that：they were responsible for turning in their homework and for keeping their desks in order．I certainly agreed with Greg about responsibility．
    It took me a while to catch on，but the seeds had been planted．The next week I put Shelley in charge of the weekly report．Matt was asked to bring in some articles for Friday social studies．Francis was glad to take pictures for the class scrapbook（剪贴薄）．Slowly，I realized everyone could participate with a little guidance．
    I was catching on to the fact that what was true for me was also true for my students：I worked hard when I felt in control of the situation．And so did they．In a classroom where the teacher did everything，it was only natural that the students stopped working hard．
    It didn't happen overnight．But the classroom gradually became a happier place for all of us．I wasn't as tired because I wasn't the only one working．My students---most of them，at least---were working much harder．And they were enjoying it．
    Four years later I'm still learning．I still want to run the show．It's often more difficult for me to relax，sit back，and watch a student take charge than to bear the entire responsibility myself．I have to remind myself that the order，the control，when it eventually does come，will be a whole lot easier to live with，easier and happier for all of us．

    10．How many hours do you spend sitting in a chair every day？Eight hours in the office plus three hours in front of the TV after work is the usual situation for many people．
    You probably don't need an expert to tell you that sitting too much is not good for your health-from an increased risk of heart disease and obesity（肥胖） in the long term，to reduced cholesterol（胆固醇） maintenance in the short term，not to mention the pressure on your neck and spine（脊柱）．
    To make matters worse，a growing body of research suggests that the negative effects of sitting too much cannot be countered with a good diet and regular exercise，according to an article in The New York Times．The article reported that a study of nearly 9，000Australians found that for each additional hour of television a person watched per day，the risk of dying rose by 11percent．In other words，sitting is killing us．
    Stand up for health．Health experts suggest we break up those many hours spent sitting with more hours spent standing．
    The BBC and the University of Chester in the UK conducted a simple experiment with a small group of 10volunteers who usually spent most of the day sitting．They were asked to stand for at least three hours a day．The researchers took measurements on days when the volunteers stood，and when they sat around．When they looked at the data，there were some striking differences．Blood sugar became level after a meal much quicker on the days when the volunteers in the study stood compared with the days they spent in a chair．Standing also burned more calories（热量单位：卡路里）-about 50calories an hour．Over the course of a year that would add up to about 30，000extra calories，or around 3.63kilograms of fat．
    John Buckley，a member of the research team，said that although doing exercise offers many proven benefits，our bodies also need the constant，almost imperceptible（感觉不到的） increase in muscle activity that standing provides．Simple movement helps us to keep our all-important blood sugar under control．
