【题目】Swiss researchers said Monday they have developed a wireless camera system to monitor vital signs in premature babies, a move that could replace uncomfortable and highly inaccurate skin sensors (传感器) which produce false alarms in up to 90 percent of cases, mainly set off by the baby’s movement.

“This is a cause of discomfort for the babies, because we have to check on them every time,” said Jean-Claude Fauchere, a doctor at University Hospital Zurich’s newborn clinic.

His hospital is preparing to begin tests of a new, contactless system created by researchers at the EPFL polytechnical university in Lausanne and at the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology.

The system designed in Switzerland should allow premature babies kept warm in incubators (恒温箱) to be medically monitored using highly sensitive cameras that detect the newborn’s pulse by analyzing its skin color, which changes so slightly every time its heart beats.

“Breathing is monitored by measuring movements of its chest and shoulders. At night, infrared (红外线的) cameras take over, and monitoring can be carried out non-stop,” the statement said.

The visual system was designed by CSEM researchers, who chose cameras sensitive enough to detect minute changes in skin color, while the EPFL researchers designed algorithms (运算程序) to process the data in real time.

“We ran an early study on adults, where we looked at a specific part of skin on their foreheads,” EPFL doctoral student Sibylle Fallet said. “With our algorithms we can track this area when the person moves, and use tiny changes in their color to determine the pulse,” she said. “The tests showed that the cameras produced practically the same results as conventional sensors.”

Once the system has been widely tested on premature babies, it could one day replace skin sensors altogether, the schools said.

1What is the advantage of the wireless camera system?

A. It is light and painless. B. It is mobile and effective.

C. It is cheap and convenient. D. It is comfortable and accurate.

2What is the key for the wireless camera to monitor a premature baby?

A. Its non-stop measurement.

B. Good condition of incubators.

C. Its sensitivity to sense skin color change.

D. The algorithms to process the data in time.

3It be inferred from what Sibylle Fallet said that .

A. their early study on adults was successful

B. the system has been used on premature babies

C. the visual system can sense the people’s pulse

D. the wireless cameras will replace conventional sensors

4What’s the schools’ attitude towards the visual system?

A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain.

【题目】根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。UrbanizationUntil relatively recently, the vast majority of human being lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago.1In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history—a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.Britain was only the beginning.2The process of urbanization—the migration (迁徙) of people from the countryside to the city—was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.In 1900, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms.3Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninetyfive people on farms to feed five people in cities.4Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite (精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus(过剩)food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.5Today, instead of needing ninetyfive farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred nonfarmers.

A. That kept cities very small.

B. The rest live in small towns.

C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered

D. Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies.

E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.

F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.

G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.

【题目】Balancing work and school is not an easy task for me. My first term in college has come and gone and I’ve had to balance a job there, too. I want to cut one loose. Honestly, many times I thought I wanted to drop out of school and just do my job because I needed the money. For a long while I made myself believe that school was getting in the way of my job and money. Not only was I trying to do work and school, but also I was trying to have a social life. Many times I thought that there were not enough hours in the day but I wasn’t managing my time right. Hanging out with friends may have been wonderful but it wasn’t putting money in my pocket or knowledge in my brain. Friends would have to wait. I was back on the see-saw (跷跷板) of balancing work and school.

Scheduling and planning became the key to my success. Setting deadlines and meeting them were important to my college experience. Planning was going well and I felt ready to try and throw a social life back there. I tried to make plans with friends that didn’t conflict with my deadlines. That was actually harder than I thought. So once again my social life had to be put on hold (搁置). My friends were very understanding and encouraged me to do my work. The extra motivation really proved helpful in the end. Some friends would joke that I was all work and no play but sometimes that’s what has to happen to get work done.

As the last term came to an end I can say I learned a lot about college life. Planning is necessary for organization. Drawing up a list of all things I had to do at the beginning of the week and actually completing them made me feel good. Not only have I learned something new about organization, but also I acquired a new tool that I can take everywhere with me and use effectively.

1The author wanted to drop out of school because .

A. he wanted to earn money

The old saying “The early bird catches the worm” show us the importance of planning, working hard and trying constant. To achieve outstanding results, people must plan ahead of and work diligently to overcome all kind of difficulties.

That has been my own experience, either. When I first started at high school, I seldom passed my exams, so I never prepared well. Later, my teacher, Mr. Black, advised me plan everything in advance. She asked me to study hard as well. After a year of putting his advice onto practice, I can now easily pass all my exams.

There are no shortcuts to succeed.

【题目】Would you buy a car that released calming smells into the air when you are stuck in heavy traffic? Would you buy a robot that smells like a human being?

Many people have seen the 3-D computer-made environments of virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR). Now these virtual worlds will not just look and sound real. Researchers have created VR environments that even smell like the real things. With the new technology, users open a virtual door and step into a new environment, like a rainforest. After they enter this virtual world, special equipment releases forest-like smells into the air to make the experience seem more real.

Suzanne Fisher-Murray said, “It is a really wonderful experience that you have because you, re exploring this environment and you have smells with it.”

In the United States, Smell-O-Vision was designed to provide smells during the showing of a movie. The Smell-O-Vision system was once popular in the 1960s. Now, Emanuela Maggioni says it is close to becoming popular again. “The connection with emotions, memories, and ... the sense of smell,” Maggioni said. “It is unbelievable what we can do with technology.”

The uses for smell technology are not just limited to films and the performing arts. Researchers showed a computer program where users could imagine themselves driving a car. The system included a special smell- spraying machine. Dmitrijs Dmitrenko said, “We want to deliver the smell of lavender (薫衣草) every time the person drives over the speed limit. We choose lavender because it’s a very calming smell.”

Scientists are experimenting with smell instead of sounds or image-based alerts on telecommunications equipment. And businesses are already using smell to influence people’s behavior. “Not only...in stores…But on the other side, you can create and stimulate (刺激) immediate buying,” Maggioni said. “So you’re in a library and you smell coffee and actually you are unconsciously having the need to drink a coffee.”

1Using smell technology, researchers make VR environments .

A. have a smell of a rainforest B. even smell like real ones

C. look like a 4-D environment D. impress people with a virtual world

2The example of Smell-O-Vision proves that .

A. America is the first to use smell technology

B. cinemas are the most suitable for smell sense

C. smell technology has been tried before

D. it was out of date to use smell-spraying devices

3How is smell technology used by businessmen?

A. To make buyers understand salesmen better.

B. To remind people of their unrealistic buying.

C. To help customers choose their favorite goods.

D. To encourage people to buy something suddenly.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The developments of smell technology.

B. A major breakthrough of smell technology.

C. The sense of smell in human communication.

D. The advanced smell-spraying machines.
