7.Taste is such a subjective matter that we don't usually conduct preference tests for food.The most you can say about anyone's preference,is that it's one person's opinion.But because the two big cola companies-Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola are marketed so aggressively,we have wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty.We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi fans:find your brand in a blind tasting.
We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi,Diet (低糖的) Coke,or Diet Pepsi.These were people who thought they'd have no trouble telling their brand from the other brand.
We eventually located 19regular cola drinkers and 27diet cola drinkers.Then we fed them four unidentified samples of cola one at a time,regular colas for the one group,diet versions for the other.We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi,then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants'choices with what mere guess-work could have accomplished.
Getting all four samples right was a tough test,but not too tough,we thought,for people who believed they could recognize their brand.In the end,only 7out of 19regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials.The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7of 27identified all four samples correctly.
While both groups did better than chance would predict,nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times.Two people got all four samples wrong.Overall,half of the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first,so tiredness,or taste   burnout,was not a factor.Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.

5.Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain's most powerful classes,which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect.And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe-the business tribe.
You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery.So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living,rather than your hands.It showed you were serious.It showed you were a professional.It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one.It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn't wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.
This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world.They are part of the uniform of business.
"Ties offer a point of difference,"says John Milne,head of the British Guide of Tie Makers."They give a chance to say something about their own personality."
So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie,there is a good chance that he is the office joker.There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
Is there a future for ties?The signs are not promising.Tie wearing seems to be rare among entrepreneurs(企业家) in the Internet and new technology industries.Many political leaders,including British Prime Minister Tony Blair,now go without ties.This shows they are men of the people-but not the people wearing ties.
Up until around 1960,it was common for men across the Western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform.That changed with the election of John F.Kennedy to the presidency of the United States.Kennedy never wore a hat in fact his nickname was"hatless Jack".Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat,millions of
other men decided that they did not have to,either.Perhaps"tieless Tony"(UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as"hatless Jack".
21.In Britain,ties were first used as a sign to show a person'sC.
A.personality
B.job
C.social position
D.favorite hobby
22.In the business world,wearing a tie was necessary becauseD.
A.it showed you were welltrained
B.it showed you got a good salary
C.it showed you were an employer
D.it showed you were a brainworker
23.The writer may hold the opinion thatA.
A.millions of people will go to work without a tie
B.Kennedy is the best leader in the world
C.Blair is the best leader in the world
D.people will wear hats instead of ties.
