What do you remember about your childhood? I have good memories of exploring(探测) the fields near my house and riding my bike around the park. Today, children don’t spend enough time in the fresh air. Many of them fix their eyes on a screen either on a computer, or a TV ---they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature.
Now 400 organizations in the UK are encouraging children to have some “wild time”. They want kids to exchange at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. The simple pleasures of exploring and discovering nature help children to learn and keep fit too. Andy Simpson, who is part of the campaign(倡议活动), says: “An extra 30 minutes of wild time every day for all under 12-year-olds in the UK would be the equivalent(同等) of just three months of their childhood spent outdoors.” Even if the kids live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park. However, children often need a helping hand from Mum and Dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go.
So despite(尽管) the complex(复杂的) world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing “nature’s playground ” is what modern children need. Andy Simpson adds: “We want parents to see what this magical “playground” does for their kids’ development , independence and creativity(创造力) , by giving wild time a go ” . David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, “We need to make more space for wild time in children’s daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted. ”

Researchers are placing robotic dogs in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans.Alan Beck,an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards,a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged,or stimulated(刺激),” Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote that, especially for those without friends or help.A robotic dog could be a solution.”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO,is placed for six weeks in the homes of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO.Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,”says a seventy-year-old lady.“When I’m watching TV,he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down.He has a mind of his own.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it.A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning,it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry,” Beck says.“But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”
“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become more valuable health helpers. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels,or heart rhythms.AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people’s minds.”

A.understand human-animal relationship
B.find the causes of old people’s loneliness
C.make lonely old people’s life better
D.promote the animal-assisted research
2.In the research, the old people are asked to .
A.note the activities of AIBOs
B.keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeks
C.analyze the collected information
D.record their feelings and activities
3.What is the advantage of AIBOs over live dogs?
A.They can watch TV with their owners.
B.They can help the disabled people.
C.They respond to all the human orders.
D.They are easier to keep at home.

To Whom It May Concern,
My husband Jim and I got married in 1965. For the first ten years of our marriage, I was very happy to stay home and raise our three children. Then about four years ago, our youngest child went to school, and I thought I might go back to work.
Jim was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He started to do all the things I used to do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business.
After several weeks of job hunting, I found my present job, which is working for a small public relation firm. At first, my husband was proud of me and would tell his friends, “My clever little wife can run that company she’s working for.”
But, as his joking words were becoming reality, Jim stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I am now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our combined incomes, Jim can do things that we had always dreamed of doing, but we don’t do these things because he is unhappy.
We fought about little things, and Jim is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think there is a possibility that our marriage may come to an end.
I love Jim very much, and I don’t want him to feel inferior(较差的), but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don’t know how. Can you give me some advice? Will I have to choose one or the other or can I keep both my husband and my new career?
Please help.
Yours,
Mary

Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.
I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just under three months after the assassination(暗杀) of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.
Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It's also a great source of inspiration.
Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favorite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you'll find yourself creating vivid mental images—matching the music that you are listening to.
1.Music has magical power because it ________.
A. is a kind of language
B. can be played much louder than words
C. receives a personal radio signal
D. can influence a person's spirit
2.One can learn from the second paragraph that the Beatles ________.
A. were the biggest band in American history
B. are not accepted by modern American people
C. appeared at a special time in American politics
D. represented the roots of American culture
3.One will do all of the following while listening to music EXCEPT ________.
A. feeling very refreshed
B. having emotional changes
C. painting some vivid pictures
D. feeling inspired by the composer
4.It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.
A. has been influenced by the Beatles
B. enjoys drinking tea in his spare time
C. admires President John Kennedy very much
D. likes to match his own feeling with that of the composer

With my hands and knees on the floor of the airplane, I was searching for an old lady’s missing hearing aid during the flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. It occurred to me that this may not be the most dignified posture for a Buddhist nun(尼姑).
I had seen the old lady from the seat in front of me as she walked up and down the passage with a flashlight. I asked a few times what was wrong, but she didn’t answer at first —– she couldn’t hear me. She was wearing a woolen coat. Judging from her accent, she came from Eastern Europe.
Do you know how much hearing aids cost? Thousands, especially for the new tiny hidden-in-the-ear type she described. It takes a long time for an appointment to make a new one, and many doctor visits to get the thing adjusted right. Therefore, my dignity seemed less important than finding that hearing aid. But how does one find a tiny black object in a shadowy jet cabin(机舱)
The lady wasn’t even sure where or when she had lost it. At one point, a couple of flight attendants did a random search around the lady’s seat; I wasn’t impressed. They left suggesting that she search the seat of her previous flight! My flashlight turned up all kinds of small objects, bits of plastic, broken pieces of headphones.
The old lady said that she gave up. Yet I couldn’t. After we landed, as passengers streamed past us, I insisted that the lady move aside while awaiting her wheelchair. Then I got into a real down and dirty search among the dust under her seat and on the floor.
Look! A little peanut-sized shiny black object caught the light of my flashlight in a floor crack near her seat.
What a rush. “I found it!”
With great astonishment and gratitude, the old lady responded, “I haven’t the words to express my thanks!”
1.Why did the author put her hands and knees on the floor?
A. She is a religious Buddhist nun.
B. She fell down from her seat.
C. She helped the old lady look for her hearing aid.
D. She wanted to stand out among the passengers.
2.What do we know about the old lady?
A. She ignored the author’s question on purpose.
B. She is an American.
C. She lost her hearing aid by accident.
D. It was not difficult for her to get the hearing aid at all.
3.Where was the hearing aid found?
A. On the previous flight.
B. Close to the old lady’ seat.
C. On the wheelchair.
D. In another jet cabin.
4.According to the last two paragraphs, what is the old lady’s attitude towards the author?
A. Respectful. B. Doubtful.
C. Supportive. D. Grateful.
