13.3D films are fun一of course they are,even the bad ones.But these movies are still in their infancy.The question is whether 3D filmmakers can do better.
I have no doubt they will,but I believe they will achieve cosmetic changes around the edges rather than revolutionary breakthroughs.3D filmmakers don't realize,or at least have not sufficiently taken to heart,that the medium they're working in is binocular (同时用双目的)film,not merely 3D film.And once one realizes this,it is possible to see that whole fields of potential film experience have been left entirely untapped.
When we say 3D movies,we are referring to stereopisis (立体视觉).But binocular vision refers to the use of two eyes for vision,whereas stereopsis is just one of the functions binocular vision gives us.
Why do we have such a large binocular vision field in the first place?I have argued in my book,The Vision Revolution,that we have forward-facing eyes in order to see well in cluttered forest habitats.Our large binocular field evolved for seeing past layers of clutter( 一堆杂乱的东西),and integrating two different views of a scene into a single combined view.I call this function of binocular vision"X-ray vision"because it allows us to see the clutter as semi-transparent,something through which to see the scene beyond.
If 3D filmmakers are going to throw binocular images at our big binocular field,then they should be sending us views of the kind that field evolved to process:views within cluttered environments,whether leafy forests or spider-web-filled rooms.In this light,3D film ought to put the viewer into the bodies and eyes of characters in the story,placing him or her into the interactions between the characters and their surroundings.This would allow viewers to truly see out of the eyes of others,to experience other worlds,and yet not have the views of the scenes beyond blocked out,just as in real life.A simple first step forward is to begin calling them binocular movies,not 3D movies.

47.The underlined word"cosmetic"in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to"A.
A.seeming
B.welcome
C.unnecessary
D.thorough
48.According to the author,why have 3D filmmakers not made a breakthrough?D
A.They are short of resources.
B.They are satisfied with what they have achieved.
C.They don't know how 3D really works.
D.They don't know what 3D technology can really achieve.
49.What would binocular movies be able to do?B
A.Take advantage of X-rays.
B.Make use of cluttered images.
C.Place viewers within real cluttered environments during movies.
D.See the surrounding world through the eyes of other viewers.
50.What is the main idea of the text?C
A.The evolution of binocular vision.
B.The problems 3D filmmakers face.
C.How binocular vision can be exploited in 3D films.
D.The differences between binocular films and 3D films.

分析 本文是一篇科教类阅读,主要介绍了作者对于目前3D电影的一些看法及3D电影中双目视觉应该如何拓展.

解答 47-50.ADBC
47题答案:A考查细节推理,根据原文第二段中的but I believe they will achieve cosmetic changes around the edges rather than revolutionary breakthroughs.但是我认为他们会取得____的成就而不是突破性进展.可知作者认为他们所取得的进展只是"表面上的",故本题答案为A选项.
48题答案:D考查细节推理,根据原文第二段中的3D filmmakers don't realize,or at least have not sufficiently taken to heart,that the medium they're working in is binocular (同时用双目的)film,not merely 3D film.可知作者认为他们之所以无法取得突破是因为他们没有意识到"什么是真正的3D电影(即不知道3D电影科技真正能到达什么水平)",故本题答案为D选项.
49题答案:B考查细节推理,根据原文的I call this function of binocular vision"X-ray vision"because it allows us to see the clutter as semi-transparent,something through which to see the scene beyond.

4.The unthinkable keeps happening.The 18th hot car death of the year was recorded Thursday---on the same day a national public service campaign started.It is meant to warn parents about the dangers of leaving kids in overheated cars.In the latest unfortunate accident,a 10-month-old girl died in Wichita,Kan,after being left by her parents in a car that was parked outside her house.The baby was forgotten,according to the police.
One New Mexico teenager's creation called"Hot Seat"might someday prevent such deaths.Alyssa Chavez,a 17-year-old from Albuquerque,said she designed a warning system that might stop people from accidentally leaving their young children in the car after they get out of it.
Chavez,whose mother owns a day-care center,said she had heard about the deaths of three children in hot cars in summer."I felt that would be a good project for my eighth-grade science fair project---to find something to prevent those accidents from happening,"said Chavez.
She bought a door alarm (警报器) and began to design her new warning system.Finally,she won the science fair.And for the last three years,she's been improving the design and creating a busness plan.
The invention works in a simple but effective way.A parent places a sensor pad (感应垫) under the cover of a baby car seat.The pad has a sensor that communicates with a key fob (饰物) carried by the parent to find out how far the parent is from the car.If the parent is more than 40feet away from the car,the pad will check to see if it feels the child in the seat.If it doesn't,the alarms will not sound.If it does,then three alarms will go off---the key fob,the parent's phone and the car alarm itself.Chavez is now trying to raise money to build a model Hot Seat.
28.What can we say about the 10-month-old girl's parents?A
A.They were too careless.
B.They treated her unkindly.
C.They had poor driving skills.
D.They were against the campaign.
29.Chavez's warning systemB.
A.was suggested by her mother
B.was designed in her eighth grade
C.works together with a door alarm
D.has helped her earn a lot of money
30.If a baby is sitting in the car,the alarms will go off whenD.
A.the car key is taken out
B.its parent gets out of the car
C.the pad feels it on the car seat
D.its parent is over 40feet away
31.What is the text mainly about?D
A.An interesting science fair project.
B.A national public service campaign.
C.An unfortunate accident in Wichita.
D.A successful invention by a teenager.

1.Shoppers in the United States have many different retail stores(零售店)to choose from.You can shop at large department stores,furniture stores,jewelry stores,electronic equipment stores and many others.Another type of retail store-the catalog store,has become popular in the U.S.
Catalog stores offer much of the same goods as traditional retail stores.However,in these  stores,shoppers select the items they wish to buy from large catalogs that are filled with photos    and descriptions of all the different goods.The variety of products listed in the catalogs includes everything from baby clothing to video equipment and watches.The prices of these items are very low.In fact,the same items often cost more in other retail stores.And that's the reason many people prefer to shop in catalog stores.
When shoppers go to a catalog store,they see many brand-name products on display.If they are interested in purchasing an item,they need to follow this simple procedure.
●First, they go to a counter to find the store's catalog.
●They look in the catalog to find the exact item they wish to buy.
●Then, they fill out an order form with the name of the item, the item number from the    catalog, the price, and their name and address.
●After completing the form, the customer gives it to a salesperson, who checks to see if the item is in stock.
If the item is available,the stockroom sends it on a conveyor belt(输送带)to the pick-up  counter.When the item arrives at the pick-up counter,the customer's name is called,and the  customer pays for the item.
The whole procedure usually takes ten to twenty'minutes.If the item isn't available,the salesperson can usually check the store's computer and find out when it will be in stock again.
Catalog stores usually don't offer all the services that regular retail stores do.They usually don't have many salespeople,so customers can't expect to receive much assistance or attention from store employees.Customers need to know about the features and the quality of the items they wish to buy before they shop,since there isn't much opportunity to ask questions or examine the product in the store.However,catalog stores offer quality items at lower prices,and consumers seem to appreciate this.
32.What is the difference between the traditional retail stores and the catalog storesB?
A.The prices of products in catalog stores are higher.
B.Shoppers select the items they need from large catalogs.
C.Catalog Stores offer more products than the traditional stores.
D.Catalog stores usually offer all the services that regular retail stores do.
33.Which of the following is the right procedure for a shopper in a catalog storeC?
①Check the catalog to select the items.
②Fill out the order form.
③Wait at the pick-up counter.
④Find a catalog at a counter.
⑤Find a salesperson to cheek the form.
A.④-①-③-⑤-②B.①-④-②-③-⑤
C.④-①-②-⑤-③D.④-②-⑤-③-①
34.From the text we know that shopper of catalog storesD.
A.become salespeople now
B.do the same as in retail stores
C.have more chances to examine the goods
D.should know the information of the goods ahead
35.Catalog stores are popular mainly because theyA
A.offer quality goods at lower prices
B.have many salespersons for service
C.can help save much time when doing shopping

5.Drug  Problems
If you're worried about your own or someone else's drug taking or misuse,it's good to know the facts.
Why take drugs?
Drug users don't start using drugs with the intention of becoming addicted.But many drugs contain addictive substances and even people who use them occasionally can become dependent and need to use them regularly.
Reasons why people start using drugs can include:to escape problems they may be having in other parts of their life, peer pressure and fitting in with another group of people, being curious about the effects of drugs.
If you start to use drugs on a regular basis,or if you become dependent on them,it can affect your family and friends as well as having a serious impact on your own physical and mental well-being.
Drug overdoses can be fatal.You can die instantly from misusing substances and drugs that you can buy over the counters.
Signs of drug abuse and misuse
There is not a common list of symptoms that you can use to tell if you or someone you know is misusing drugs.That's because drug use affects different people in different ways,depending on the type of drugs they're using.
Although anxiety, tiredness and a change in sleeping habits can be signs of drug use, they can also be caused by changes in your body, stress or other problems.
Drugs are categorized into three classes based on their overall level of harm.Class A drugs are the most dangerous,however,all the drugs in all three classes are harmful and addictive.
Remember that all drugs are illegal,even Class C drugs like cannabis(大麻烟).If you're caught selling them to other people,or carrying a small amount in your pocket,it's likely that the police will get involved.
If you're found guilty of any of these offences, you may face a fine or time in custody(拘留),with Class A drugs carrying the most severe sentences.
Worried about a friend?
If you think that one of your friends or relatives is misusing drugs,you may want to approach them and talk about it.It's not your responsibility to make them stop,but you can tell them about how their behavior is affecting your relationship.
If they ask for help with their problem, then it's important to listen and help them find the right information and treatment.
National Drugs Helpline
If you're worried about drug abuse and addiction you can call the National Drugs Helpline on 0800 776 600for confidential advice---lines are open seven days a week.Calls are free and they won't show up on your phone bill,but you may be charged if you use a mobile.

2.Grandparents might be known for spoiling grandchildren, but a new study says they might also be helping the kids improve their social skills and behavior.
Spending time with grandma and grandpa especially appears to help children from single-parent,divorced/separated or stepfamily households, according to the report, published in the February Journal of Family Psychology.
"Grandparents are a positive force for all families but play a significant role in families undergoing difficulties,"the study's lead author,Shalhevet Attar-Schwartz,of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said in an American Psychological Association news release."They can reduce the negative influence of parents separating and be a resource for children who are going through these family changes."
In interviewing 11-to 16-year olds from England and Wales,Attar-Schwartz and her team found that the more conversations the youths had with a grandparent, including asking for advice or even money, the better they got along with their peers and the fewer problems they had, such as hyperactivity and disruptive behavior.
"This was found across all three family structures,"she said."But adolescents in single-parent households and stepfamilies benefited the most. The effect of their grandparents'involvement was stronger compared to children from two biological parent families."
The study did not look at children who lived solely with their grandparents, though.
The findings have great implications for people in the United States, the authors said, because American grandparents are increasingly sharing living space with their grandchildren.A 2004 U.S.Census Bureau survey found that more than 5 million households include a grandparent and a grandchild under 18,up 30 percent since 1990,according to background information in the news release.

The first day I go to high school,I saw some of my classmate playing table tennis.Amazing at how skillful they were,I was determined to be just as good.Later on,I often watched them careful to learn their techniques.Then I was kept practising until I became confident enough to challenge the good players.At the end of the term I became one of best players in my class.
I am really proud for this experience,because it helps me realise that we all can achieve your goals through hard work.It also helps me better understanding the proverb"Practice makes perfect."
