16.Henry Ford grew up on an un-electrified farm,and as a young man he followed Edison's career as the inventor became a national role model.Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer.
In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and,though still working for Edison Co.,he had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle2during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York,Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison was impressed. Edison is said to have slammed his fist down and shouted¨Young man,that's the thing!You have it!Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant."Edison himself had been working on the idea,but had only been considering electricity as the power source,so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one.
The words comforted Ford greatly,who immediately set out building a second car which was to become the Model-T.6.The two men became f'ast friends and would go on camping trips together.When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair,Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race.At the 50th anniversary of the invention of light-bulb,Ford honored Edison.When Edison spoke,he ended his speech directed at Ford:"As to Henry Ford,words fail to express my feelings.I can only say that he is my friend."Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931.
Once,Ford asked Thomas Edison's son Charles to sit by the dying inventor's bedside and hold a test tube next to his father's mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviors( as was Edison)including some interest in reanimation and spiritualism(夏活通灵术)and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison's soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life.
The test tube itself didn't turn up until 1950when it was listed in the Ford possessions after Clara Ford's passing away,and then lost again until 1978when it was discovered in an exhibit Entitled"Henry Ford-A Personal History"in the Henry Ford Museum.It would then be discovered that the tube was labeled"Edison's Last Breath".
There is a further mystery of this"last breath"test tube. It would seem as if Edison had quite a last breath indeed,as the Edison Estate holds a collection of 42test tubes all supposedly containing Edison's last breath.
Regardless of the excitement over the last breath,the test tube is quite touching in its meaning.Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behavior towards.their loved ones and mistreatment of employees,between them at least,there was clearly a deep respect and admiration.

Let Moments Inspire You

When I was a teenager I volunteered to work at the water station at a 10,000m race. My job was to hand out water to the runners. I remember being so excited to see all the different kinds of people who passed by and grabbed a cup of water. I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! So the next year I signed up for the race.

That first 10,000m race was quite an experience. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish. Then came a defining moment. At one point near the end, a 70-year-old ran past me, very fast and I felt embarrassed that I was 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. I felt defeated for a second. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. He had different abilities, experience, training and goals for himself. I had mine. Remember my goal was only to finish. After a minute, it hit me that this was a lesson I could draw from. I learned something about myself in that moment. I turned my embarrassment into inspiration. I decided that I would not give up on running races. In fact, I would run even more races and I would learn how to train and prepare properly and one day I would be one of those 70-year-olds who was still running. As I crossed the finish line, I was proud of my accomplishment.

In life we all have those moments when we compare ourselves to others. It’s natural. Don’t allow those moments to weaken you. Turn them into motivation and let them inspire you. Use them to show you what is possible. With a proper preparation and training, you can improve your results to achieve anything you want in life.

1.The author signed up for the race because of _______.

C. her interest in sports D. the racers’ excitement

2.Which of the following can best describe the author?

A. Positive B. Negative

C. Doubtful D. Serious

3.How did the author feel at her race result?

4.According to the article, finding yourself not as good as others, you should ________.

A. try to find out other gifts you might have

B. avoid comparing yourself with others

Here are four tips to enjoy a Swedish summer.

Stay in a cottage

There are nearly 600,000 summer houses in Sweden. And more than 50% of the Swedes have access to them through family or friends. A few of the most popular summer house destinations for Swedes can be found in the provinces of Smaland, Skane and Oland. If you want to spend your summer like a Swede, make sure to spend a few nights in a cottage.

Follow the trail to Gotland

The island of Gotland is where half of Stockholmers go during the summer. In the medieval (中世纪)city of Visby, ancient streets and city walls meet modern restaurants, cafes and shops. A short ferry ride northeast of Gotland lies the smaller island of Faro, where director Ingmar Bergman used to live. Both Faro and Gotland are famous for their many flea markets.

Check out a music festival

Swedish summer is a festival season. Way Out West, or WOW, is the most popular music festival with about 30,000 visitors. It is usually held in Gothenburg park of Slottsskogen in August. It has been prized as the Most Innovative Festival by MTV and, since 2012, WOW has only served vegetarian food(素食). The decision, praised by Jamie Oliver, has reduced the festival’s carbon footprint by 20%. WOW is also Europe’s biggest combined music and film festival.

Pick blueberries in Dalarna

Dalarna is perhaps the most Swedish province, with its red wooden cottages, deep green forests and Dala horses. This region is perfect for making yourself involved in traditional Midsummer celebrations or listening to Swedish folk music. When you need a break from all of this loud Swedishness, head into the woods for some quiet blueberry picking.

1.What should you do if you want to spend your summer vacation like a Swede?

A. Spend a few nights in a cottage

B. Pick blueberries in Dalarna

C. Follow the trail to Gotland

D. Attend a music festival

2.Where did the director Ingmar Bergman use to live?

A. The island of Gotland
