    Baghdad Seeking Support of Arabian World

    　　BAGHDAD(Reuters)—Iraq(伊拉克)asked Arabs on Monday to seek martyrdom(殉难；牺牲)by attacking U.S. forces in Kuwait(科威特), saying the Americans were preparing to occupy(占领)Iraq.

    　　“We in Iraq and in the entire(Arab)nation believe that every faithful(虔诚的)Arab has the right, duty, and the honor to deal with these forces in Kuwait, ”a spokesman was replying to the comments by al-Attiya, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC，海湾合作委员会), in which he turned down an apology by President Saddam Hussein(萨达姆·侯塞因)to the Kuwaiti people for the 1990 invasion(入侵).

    　　Saddam apologized Saturday for his 1990-1991 invasion of the country, but scolded Kuwait rulers for conspiring(同谋；搞阴谋)with Washington against the Baghdad(巴格达)government.

    　　Kuwait turned down the apology and said Saddam's message amounted to“incitement(煽动)for terrorism(恐怖主义)”.

    　　The Iraq spokesman said, “Does Attiya not know that the U.S. forces occupy Kuwait, start from there to destroy the Iraq and kill the Iraqis, and that the U.S. army forces plan to occupy Iraq?”

    　　The GCC is made up of Kuwait, Saudi Arabian(沙特阿拉伯), United Arab Empires(阿拉伯联合酋长国), Qatar(卡塔尔), Bahrain(巴林)and Oman(阿曼).

    　　UAE Information Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid al-Nahayan said Saddam's speech had cost Baghdad what support it had left in the Arab world.

    　　“I believe the speech cost the Iraq leadership any pity it had left and further proved the weakness of Iraq's political and media credibility(可靠性；确实性)at a time when Iraq needs to try its best to get rid of the threat of a face-off(对峙), ”Sheikh Abdullah told the official Kuwait News Agency.

    　　Iraq invaded Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990.U.S.-led united forces drove the Iraq army from the oil-rich state in February, 1991.

    　　Thousands of U.S. troops have been sent to Kuwait since the 1991 Gulf War. However, these forces have been attacked several times in recent weeks. At least one U.S. soldier has died.

    　　BAGRAM, Afghanistan: A transport helicopter packed with US soldiers crashed near a military base just north of the capital, killing at least five of them and wounding seven others, the US military said yesterday.

    　　The cause of Sunday's crash, about 11 kilometers east of Bagram Air Base, was not immediately known. The US military said it was investigating, and it refused to take journalists from the base to the crash site.

    　　But after a long search, reporters found the wreckage in a remote area yesterday afternoon. It was broken into three pieces, some of which had fallen into a mostly dry riverbed. About 15 US soldiers were guarding the site.

    　　A statement sent by email from Central Command, in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday said, “Early reports indicate seven service members were killed,” when the US military helicopter went down.

    　　At Bagram Air Base yesterday morning, US military spokesman Major Richard Sater said the plane was an MH-53 transport helicopter and confirmed that it was involved in all ongoing military operation, dubbed Mountain Resolve, taking place in the east of the country. He referred all other questions, including the numbers of casualties and the cause of the crash, to Central Command officials.

    　　Bagram Air Base, just north of the capital, is home to most of the peacekeepers patrol Kabul.

    　　In another development, three US soldiers were killed on Sunday in Iraq. Gunmen in Mosul shot two American soldiers driving through the city center, sending their vehicle crashing into a wall. About a dozen swarming teenagers dragged the men out of the wreckage and beat them with concrete blocks, witnesses said.

    　　In recent weeks, attacks against US troops and their Iraqi allies-such as policemen and politicians working for tile interim Iraqi administration-have increased in the region surrounding Mosul.

    　　In Baqouba, just north of Baghdad, insurgents detonated a roadside bomb as a 4th Infantry Divison convoy passed, killing one soldier and wounding two others, the military said on Sunday.

         For an American, or a foreigner here, any chance to have a social life is welcome. But
    what happened last night made me think I may be better off having no life while I'm in
    Baghdad.
         Friday evening,l was on my way with an American journalist friend to his welcome party.
    When we got to a checkpoint,we were told to get out of the car to be searched,which is
    normal procedure. We waited under a tent,as our car was examined on the other side
    of a wall. We couldn't see what was happening but we figured we would hit the road soon.
         But the search was taking longer than expected, probably because of a car bomb
    threat that had been reported earlier. Then we noticed the officers put their helmets(头盔)
    on. Never a good sign.
         Our Iraqi driver then noticed that our other Iraqi driver and guards who were in a
    second car were standing facing a wall. We had gotten separated from them at the
    checkpoint. We told two American officers that they were with us. They whispered
    with each other and then walked away.
         A few minutes later, an officer walked toward us and asked us to follow him. He
    said to me, "If you make any moves,l will take you down hard. "
         That's when l knew we were actually thought to be doing something terrible. We
    were told to sit in a row on the sidewalk, facing the street. I noticed across the street
    were our other driver and guards. They were also in a row, but in a kneeling position
    with their hands on their heads.
         I was shocked. The only explanation could be that our guards had been at the
    shooting range in the morning, so the police dog may have picked something up from
    that. I also wondered why our Iraqi fellows on the other side of the street were being
    treated worse than us when it was our car that was under suspicion(怀疑) .
          After the end of the hour long suffering, we were allowed to leave. No longer in
    the mood for the party,we all went home.
