12.The famed soprano(女高音)Jenny Lind had plenty of talent and determination. And when she came to America in 1850 she had more than enough publicity. Her promoter was the biggest showman(演出经理人) of them all-P.T.Barnum.
Eager to rise above his reputation as a promoter of sideshows,Barnum had risked his entire fortune on the singer that he had never heard or seen.He saw to it that the risk paid off. When she arrived in New York, her admirers  surrounded Jenny Lind.By midnight, when she arrived at her hotel,a crowd of 30,000 had gathered just to get a look at her.At one o'clock,a band of 130 musicians came to sing for her.
Tickets for her first American concert were in such demand that they were auctioned off(拍卖).The first ticket went to a hat maker named Genin who paid$225 for it and got several days'worth of fame in the bargain. At the concert 7000 shouting people crowded into Castle Garden to hear Jenny Lind sing. She received$10,000-all of which she gave to New York charities. She repeated her success in Philadelphia,Washington,Richmond,Charleston, and Baltimore.
In Baltimore something happened that may have made Jenny Lind decide that things had gotten out of hand. She was on the balcony of her hotel, bowing to the masses below when her shawl fell.Instead of returning it,the crowd fought over the shawl, tearing it to shreds and pocketing the pieces as souvenirs.Soon afterward she backed out of her contract with Barnum-at a cost of$30,000-and completed her American tour.Several years passed before she returned to the concert stage. As for P.T.Barnum,he went into a profession for which he may have been supremely well qualified-politics.

On entering the main room of the castle, the boy was quite surprised:tradesmen coming and going, people chatting in the corners, and a small orchestra playing soft music. The wise man talked with everyone, and the boy had to wait for two hours before it was his turn.

2.For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets.Most of these searches have been done over the radio.The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us.Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space,on the chance that someone may be receptive (善于接受的) to such messages.
Scientists are using powerful radio telescope to listen to signals from about 1,000stars,all within 100light years of earth.In addition,they will scan (扫视) the entire sky to"listen"for radio messages from more distant stars.Using a computer,they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time.Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise.
Of the 200billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy (银河星系),scientists find that five percent are like our sun.Perhaps half of them have a planet like earth.Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution of life.Based on the inhabitable (that can be lived in) planets in our galaxy,most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.
However,many scientists wonder whether intelligent (有智力的) life exists on other planets.Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible (可理解的) messages shows that no one is out there.They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.
Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy.Although our sun family in only about five billion years old,our galaxy is about 20billions years old.In that time,some scientists think it is likely that civilizations are much more advanced than ours.Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us.If we hope to find intelligent life,these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.

4.According to the passage,how many planets in our galaxy might human beings live?A.
A.5billion
B.10billion
C.15billion
D.200billion
5.The first paragraph in this passage is mainly aboutC.
A.where scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
B.why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
C.how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
D.when scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets
6.The underlined word"monitor"in the passage means"B".
A.find
B.follow
C.study
D.form
7.Which of the statements is TRUE based on the information in the passage?D.
A.The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy.
B.Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planet.
C.Scientists don't believe that there might be life on other planets.
D.Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planet.
