【题目】What did your school smell like? Was it noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that smells and sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity.
Bridget Shield has been conducting studies and advising people on the effects of all sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens, as well as noise made by the children themselves. "Everything points to a harmful impact of the noise on children’s performance, in numeracy, in literacy, and in spelling,” says Shield.
Shield says the sound of “babble” -the chatter of other children, is particularly distracting in the classroom.。People are very distracted by speech-particularly if it is understandable, but you’re not involved in it.” This phenomenon is also known as the irrelevant speech effect, she says, adding that “it’s a very common finding in open-plan offices as well.’’
In a series of studies published last year, Ravi Mehta found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity. Ravi Mehta suggests there maybe some benefit to playing music or other sounds in an art class or other situations where creativity is the key.
Many teachers all over the world already play music to students in class. Many are inspired by the belief that hearing music can boost IQ in their tasks, the so-called Mozart effect. While the evidence actually suggests it’s a guess to say classical music boosts brainpower, researchers do think pleasant sounds before a task can sometimes lift your mood and help you perform well, says Ravi Mehta," If you like the music or you like the sound-even listening to a Stephen King novel-then you did better. It didn’t matter about the music,“ he says.
However, it’s worth considering that music is not always helpful while you’re trying to work. Trying to perform a task which involves serial recall - for instance, doing mental mathematics-will be distracted by sounds with audio variation, says Ravi Mehta. Songs with lyrics, on the other hand, are more likely to interfere(干扰)with tasks that involve languages-such as reading comprehension.
This isn’t the only sense being related to affecting learning.

【题目】In American high schools, there is a tradition for each year's graduating class( called the seniors) to play a joke on the school—the Senior Prank(毕业恶作剧).
This usually happens at the end of the school year just before the seniors graduate from the school. It is an unofficial tradition. Al-though the schools don't encourage it, each year the seniors try to make their pranks the most original so that their class will be remembered in the years to come. The joke is supposed to be light-hearted(无伤大雅的)and must not do major damage to the school property .
The best prank at my high school was done several years ago. A flower called the golden poppy(金罂粟花)is the state flower of California ; the state law states that no one can cut them down once they are planted.
The seniors at my school took advantage of the law. They planted golden poppies all over the football field one night, spelling out their graduation year with the flowers ! Since the school couldn't break the law to cut down the poppies, they had to wait until the flowers died.
The greatest prank that I've ever heard was done by one of my history teachers when he was in high school. He and some of his close friends went fishing in hopes of catching big fish for their prank. They were lucky and caught a three-foot shark.
My teacher and his friends took the shark to the school at night and dumped it into the swimming pool. The next morning when students went swimming, they found a dead shark in their pool. The chlorine(氯)in the water had killed the shark ! My history teacher always regretted that his school had put so much chlorine in the pool, or it would have been more fun if the shark was still alive the next day.
The schools won't take it seriously if the pranks don't cause too much damage. But, sometimes the school will punish the seniors for going too far with their prank. My teacher's “Shark Prank “is an example of a prank gone too far. The school had to drain (排水)the pool and have it cleaned before filling it up again, which had cost the school several thousand dollars.

A. 资产 B. 性质 C. 道具 D. 所有权

A. the schools encourage the seniors to play the prank

【3】 We can infer(推断)from the passage that _________.
A. the “Golden Poppy Prank “is successful and well-meaning
B. the Senior Prank is an unofficial tradition
C. the school had to cut down the golden poppies at last
D. the golden poppy is the state flower of California
【4】 Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A. Only the graduating class can play the Senior Prank.
B. The schools don't encourage the Senior Prank.
C. The “Golden Poppy Prank " cost the school a lot of money.
D. The “Shark Prank “is beyond the general pranks.

【题目】They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favourite TV programme. But while our daily routines rely on clocks that tell us the time, science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal clock---have a powerful influence on our health and behaviour. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.
In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.
The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even dictate whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to fib(撒小谎) in the afternoon because, as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it harder to resist the temptation to tell lies---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.
“The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6pm and 8pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors were coming home after hunting all day their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”
So what effects do circadian rhythms have and what’s the best time of day to take advantage of them?
The underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refers to .
A. our clocksB. scientists and experts
C. our daily routinesD. circadian rhythms
