A letter to Edward,a columnist

Dear Mr.Expert,

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive(虐待)home.I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I've achieved.

Here’s the problem:several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine-so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me.But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes-it makes the place feel comfortable and warm-but this is my home, not a party house.I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?

Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan,

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict(冲突)you grew up with-or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example,“I really love your company(陪伴)but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”

Edward

                                                                   A Divine Plan
At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learningdisabled children, the father of one student
delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by those who attended. He began with a question.
"Everything God does is done with perfection. Yet, my son, Shay, cannot learn and understand things as
other children do. Where is God's plan reflected in my son?"
The audience was stilled by the question. The father continued,"I believe that when God brings a child
like Shay into the world, an opportunity to realize the Divine Plan presents itself. And it comes in the way
people treat that child."
Then he told the following story:
Shay and I walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked,"Do
you think they will let me play?"
I knew that most boys would not want him on their team. Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat
properly, much less connect with the ball. So I approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance from his teammates. Getting none, he took matters into
his own hands and said, "We are losing by six runs(得分). The game is in the eighth inning(回合). He can be on our team and we will try to put him up to bat in the ninth inning."
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. At the
top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the outfield.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. They had the potential to win. Would the
team actually let Shay bat at this juncture and give away their chance to win the game?
Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat.  At last, understanding what the boy's intentions had been, the
boys from both teams helped Shay win the game for the team and Shay was cheered as the hero.
"That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face,"the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of the Divine Plan into this world."
1. Why did the father think most of the boys wouldn't let Shay join them?
A. Because it was a very important game and they couldn't  afford to lose it.
B. Because they knew Shay was physically disabled.
C. Because they didn't get on well with Shay.
D. Because they knew Shay was anything but good at playing baseball.
2. The sentence "Although no hits came his way, he was obviously very happy just to be on the field."
should be put at the end of ________.
A. Paragraph 5
B. Paragraph 6
C. Paragraph 8
D. Paragraph 9
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Shay's team would have lost the game without him.
B. The opponent team let Shay score purposely.
C. It was quite by accident that Shay scored.
D. Shay's team let him play because they didn't take the game seriously
4. The underlined word "juncture" can be explained by ________.

A. Smiling builds up confidence.
B. Smiling changes mood.
C. Smiling helps stay positive.
D. Smiling defeats diseases.
E. Smiling attracts people.
F. Smiling relieves stress.

1. _____
Like a flower with a pleasant scent, your smile can draw people close enough to see inside you.
That's Smile Power. A smile has the power to radiate the qualities that make you beautiful on the
inside - kindness, friendship, honesty, respect, patience, and self-control. So please give smiles away
like flowers. Let your smile be an invitation for others to get to know the great person behind the smile.
Then let people see that your smile doesn't stop at your mouth. It goes all the way to your heart. On the
other hand, we are drawn to people who smile and we want to know a smiling person and figure out
what is so good. Frowns, scowls and grimaces all push people away-but a smile draws them in.
2. _____
Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There's a good chance you mood will change
for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you to have good feelings. So smile is a good state
of mind, you have a smile, then you will have better feelings. So when you are smiling you lighten up the
room, change the moods of others, and make things happier.
3._____
The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Don't go for a face lift, just
try smiling your way through the day - you'll look younger. Then you will feel better and have more
confidence, thus are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at
meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently because of your confidence.
4.  ____
Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and
overwhelmed. When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. This is because when you smile, there
is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. You can sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then
smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. You will be happy to see your stress
disappears quickly.
5. _____
Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard. When we smile our body
is sending the rest of us a message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress and worry by
smiling. So smile is a positive state of mind, every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift
to that person, a beautiful thing and then other people will also answer your smile.
