        Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in
    Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity per hour is the same in the United States as it
    is in France, Spain, and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
        In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less.
    In other words, they have decided to "spend" a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last
    fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But this is not true in
    the United States. One reason may be lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another
    may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
         Longer hours do of course increase the GDP (国内生产总值). The United States has more of its people at
    work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result
    is that America's GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour is the same.
        It's not clear which of the two situations is better. It is too early to explain the different trends in happiness
    over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no
    progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life
    balance?

         Spending beyond one's means is becoming a national problem for Americans. Borrowing has become so
    easy that it takes great willpower for people to refuse it. "I received a number of gold MasterCard and gold
    Visa card offers in the mail during the past two months," said one computer engineer at AT&T Bell
    Laboratories in Chicago. "I got three of them in one day last week."
         Lenders are providing easy credit (信贷) for borrowers. Many banks now offer every borrower a great

    lending programs for cars and boats that can cut monthly payments nearly in half. Carmakers, too, are
    lengthening easier terms. Ford Motor Credit states that 45% of its recent lending has been for sixty months,

         The total consumer debt (债务) in the United States rose 173 percent between 1974 and 1984, as the
    debt for each man, woman, and child increased from $10, 264 to $26, 566. Huge debt now is present in our
    economy (经济) at all levels. As a nation, we are more than $7 trillion in debt, and the total keeps increasing
    astonishingly.
         As we have over-borrowed, so have we overspent. In late 1986, the share of after-tax income that
    Americans saved sank below 2 percent for a short time, less than half the figure at which we saved only
    10 years ago. Americans now are buying from foreigners between about $50 and $100 billion more Mercedes
    and Toyotas, Paris fashions, and tours to Europe than the Boeing 747s, agriculture machinery, or Kansas
    wheat that the foreigners bought from America The country could not produce and pay for all the things it
    wanted.
         To make a long story short, we Americans have serious problems in keeping down spending and keeping
    up personal savings. It is high time for us American people to learn the basics of long-term money
    management.

         Some people believe that international sport brings about good will between the nations and that if
    countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: that
    international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is
    probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support
    the view that sport encourages international brotherhood. Not only was there the terrible incident (事件)

    Hockey Society are finished." The president of the society said later that such words could result in the

         The American basketball team announced that they would not give away first place to Russia, after
    a fighting end to their contest. The game had ended in quarrel. It was thought at first that the United States
    had won, by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian
    player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player beat it into the basket.
    It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. The judges discussed the matter
    for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then
    decided not to receive the silver medals.
         Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played for honors or money rather than for the
    love of the game. The suggestion that sportsmen should compete as individuals (个人), or in non-national
    teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too
    much that encourages dangerous nationalism.

    Reading comprehension.
         Almost a decade ago, the federal government dropped $100 million for an Earth-monitoring satellite that
    never made it into space. Today it sits in a closet in Maryland. Cost to taxpayers for storing it: $1 million a
    year. And that's just what's hiding in one closet. Who knows what's in the rest of them?
         Because we think the government should be held to at least the same standards as a publicly traded
    company, and because as taxpayers, we're America's shareholders, we performed an audit (财务检查) of
    sorts of the federal books. We're not economists, but we do have common sense. We tried to be apolitical
    (无关政治的) and got help from Congressional staffers from both parties, as well as various watchdog
    groups and agencies. In the end, we found that the federal government wastes nearly $1 trillion every year.
         That's roughly equal to the amount collected annually by the Internal Revenue Service in personal income
    taxes. Put another way, it's also equal to about one-third of the country's $2.9 trillion total annual budget.
    And reclaiming that lost trillion (三十亿) could help wipe out the country's annual budget deficit (赤字),
    improve education, and provide health insurance for those who don't have it.
         So how do you define "waste"? David Walker of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), a federal
    watchdog agency, calls it "the government's failure to give taxpayers the most for their money." For our part,
    we used the kind of household test you would use on a piece of meat sitting in your refrigerator: If it smells
    rotten, it's waste. And there is plenty to sniff out (闻出). Our government regularly pays for products and
    services it never gets, wildly overpays companies to do things it could do more cheaply itself, loses money
    completely due to lax (松弛的) accounting and oversight, fails to collect what it's owed, and put forward
    unnecessary programs.

         Somali pirates (海盗) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly l,200 Miles off the
    Somali coast, the farthest-off-shore attack to date, an officer said Tuesday.

         China loves exhibitions. Exhibitions provide people with a chance to see what is available, and perhaps
    more importantly, what may be available. In order to make your visit more efficient, the rules listed below
    may be of some help to you.
         Avoid attending the opening ceremony

    manned by guys who are more interested in stuffing (塞满) food into their mouths than explaining the product

         Avoid any booth with a big screen TV, a video game, or a loudspeaker
         These are cheap ways of attracting consumers to visit a booth, and it doesn't always guarantee that the
    vendor (买主) has a good product to show. Its purpose is to attract people with an electronic dog-and-pony
    show.
         Hand your name cards out to everyone
         Take plenty of business cards in both Chinese and English with you when going to an exhibition. Hand
    them out to every exhibitor whose booth you visit. This method helps advertise the name or your company,
    so don't leave home without them!
         Follow the guards
         Guards are available to assist anyone in need of help and to keep order. So follow them and look for the
    best products to see at an exhibition.
         Set a time limit
         Prepare for what you want to see, how much time you want to spend and where you want to spend your
    time.

         The practice of magic includes special words, actions, and objects. Most magic involves a person
    called a magician, who claims to have supernatural powers.
         Magic words. To work most magic, the magician sings or speaks special words in a certain order.

    because spirits live in these objects.
         Many people carry magic objects called amulets(护身符)to protect themselves from harm. Many
    amulets are stones or rings engraved(雕刻) with magic symbols.
         The magician. In some societies, nearly everyone knows how to work some magic. In other societies,
    only experts practice magic. Magicians may be called medicine men, medicine women, shamans,
    sorcerers, or witch doctors. In many societies, magicians must inherit their powers. In others, any person
    may become a magician by studying the magical arts.
         Many societies believe magicians must observe certain rules and taboos (forbidden actions) for their
    spells to work. For example, they may be required not to eat various foods or to avoid sexual activity for
