【题目】 Sometimes, you do not finish drinking your glass of water before you go to bed. 1

But have you ever wondered if it is still safe to drink?

“If you have clean water in a clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute in the US told Time.

2 That’s because after about 12 hours, the carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air reacts(反应)with the water in your glass, slightly lowering its pH level.

Also, there might be more microorganisms (微生物) in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow more quickly at room temperature. These microorganisms can stay on your glass. 3 But as long as you clean your glasses very often, this will not be a problem.

In countries like the US and UK, people often drink water directly from the tap (水龙头).4 Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, US. After six months, there is less chlorine () in the water and bacteria (细菌) start to grow. You’d better not drink the water otherwise you may get sick.

5 Schwab said people should be careful with them. If you leave a bottle of water under the sun or in a car for a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical called BPA. This chemical can cause heart disease and cancer.

A.What about plastic water bottles?

B.They can make you get sick more easily.

C.Is it safe for you to drink the water later?

D.But you may find that it tastes strange.

E.Some people prefer to drink water from rivers.

F.You might want to drink it the next morning.

G.This is OK—however, tap water cannot be stored for a long time.

【题目】 A conversation with a good listener is like a good meal—we walk away feeling satisfied and happy. 1 Here are 4 ways to make your conversation partner feel like you’re fully tuned in to their personal radio station.

2

Making your conversation partner feel safe starts with two things: an open mind and keeping judgment to yourself. Just as immersing(沉浸)yourself in a novel requires suspension of disbelief, immersing yourself in listening requires suspension of opinions or advice. While judgments may appear into your head, set them to the side.

Ask questions to follow your natural curiosity.

When you’re interested, ask questions. 3 Ask for examples. Ask for details. Following your natural curiosity by asking questions not only shows you are listening and interested, but almost always produces an interesting story.

Listen with your whole body.

In many a kindergarten classroom, teachers emphasize something called “whole body listening”. It goes like this: use your eyes to watch nonverbal(非语言), your brain to think about what is being said, your heart to feel emotions and keep the rest of your body quiet to show respect. But many of us lose it over time, especially as life gets busy. The result? We often try to multitask while listening. 4

Validate(使生效)with simple phrases.

Keep in your back pocket some validating words and phrases to show you’ve heard someone.

“Of course.” “That makes sense.” “Naturally.” “Clearly.” “For sure.” 5 In conversation, combining those little phrases: “Of course you feel that way.” or “That makes total sense.” doesn’t necessarily convey agreement, but it does convey something even bigger: acceptance.

A. Create safety.

B. Devote yourself to listening.

C. It’s appealing to talk about your own experience.

D. We half-listen while getting things done or staring at a screen.

E. Think like a journalist and ask what, when, where, why or how.

F. But being a good listener goes way beyond just not interrupting or nodding your head.

G. All of these statements confirm a person’s experience or feelings as worthy and accepted.

【题目】 It was February and Danny Filippidis and his friends were skiing around. After a few days of fun and relaxation, their annual trip was coming to a close. Danny wanted to capture(捕捉) a few more memories of it to post online when they got home. The problem was, he’d left his cell phone in the car.

By the time Danny realized this, he and his friends were already halfway up Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. Not wanting to miss a moment, he told his friends to wait while he skied back down to fetch the phone. Danny was an adult and an experienced skier, so they had no reason to doubt his return.

However, it wasn’t until it began to get dark that his friends finally realized something may have gone wrong. They called the police, who began a ground search in no time. Before long, his family and friends came down to help as well. But Danny was nowhere to be found.

What the rescue teams didn’t know at the time was that, by the time the alarm went out, Danny wasn’t even in Lake Placid anymore. He’d taken a wrong turn on his way back to the car, falling down and becoming knocked out. It was dusk by the time he woke up, not knowing where he was.

Danny struggled his way to the road. He flagged down a truck in the hope of securing a ride off the mountain. The truck stopped and he climbed into the warm cab. After telling the trucker where he was going, he fell into a heavy sleep. When the trucker finally informed him that they had arrived, it had been midnight, when his family and friends were still searching the cold wilderness for any sign of him.

Danny often reflects on what might have happened if he hadn’t been found by that trucker. To this day, Danny Filippidis doesn’t know the trucker’s name. He doubts whether he could even point him out if he saw him on the street and the police have been unable to track the man down as well.

1Why did Danny ski back to fetch his phone?

2What happened to Danny on his way down the mountain?

There is much discussion about the necessity of daily homework for students. Some say homework is necessary since only practice 1 (make) perfect, while others disagree. In my opinion, daily homework is necessary for students. However, this might be misleading that one may believe all forms of homework 2(be) necessary. Actually, only proper amount of homework in proper form is 3 (accept); some homework may not only fail to help the students, but on 4 contrary bore them so much 5 they may lose their interest in studying. “Proper” homework, in my opinion, should vary in its forms, 6 might be some extensive reading, a paper, or even just a game, as well as other ordinary exercise. And it should leave enough 7 (free) to the students so that they could do things they really like to do with selfmotivation, rather than unwillingness. We should always remember that homework is something for us to guide the students, rather than 8 (drive) them. Only if a teacher 9 (keep) this 10 his/her mind, the homework could be of the most help to the students.
