[1]What makes you nervous and excited when you think about high school? That’s right:social life! In high school, you’re at an age when you’re going through lots of physical and emotional changes, and these changes can influence your relationships with people of your age. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
[2]1.Accept that your friendships will change. You must understand that all friendships change and grow over time. It’s natural to feel sad about leaving a friend. You might be far away for a year, and then meet each other again when you find yourself in a new class together.Anything can happen; just listen to your heart and keep the lines of communication open!
[3]2.Be willing to make new friends in your current classes. You might not have the same schedule as your middle school friends. You’ll be happiest if you have friends in the places where you spend the most time.
[4]3.Find other people who like the same things you do.This will happen naturally if you know enough about yourself and what you’re good at.It’s important to be with people who are interested in what you’re interested in, so be willing to make friends in your new activities.
[5]4.Try to think outside the idea of “groups”.This is a tough one.If you’re getting pressure from one group of friends not to hang out with someone else, maybe you’re better off as a free agent.
[6]5.Get a head start. Are you starting at a new school where you don’t know anyone? If you are, jump on opportunities to _________ before you start school.Look for local community(社区)programs or town events where you can meet your future classmates.

Once again, I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Lisa. That’s where the similarities ended.
I was tall and she was small. My thick black hair had been recently cut short into an untidy style. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great. I was 12 and one of the oldest in the class while she was 11 and the youngest. I was awkward and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. But she liked me and wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes—I was too shocked to answer any other way. My family had moved six times in six years, and I had never managed to develop any friendships. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.
She lived in a fun part of town that had two pizza places, an all-right bookstore, a movie theater and a park. As we walked from the school bus stop through her neighborhood, I tried to guess which house might be hers. Was it the white one with the perfect lawn or the three –story house with a front porch? I got very surprised when she led me into an old apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister.
When we got into the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was my next surprise. I had never played with them. We sat on the floor, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. We found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and both had wild imaginations. We had a great day that afternoon .
Lisa was loved by the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines; the movie theater gave her free tickets…. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together.
Lisa, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through the rough years of early adolescence and taught me an amazing and very surprising thing about making friends: your worst enemy can turn out to be your best friend.

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for example, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic (认错的) about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
1.. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of working hard at school.
B. Choosing a career according to one’s strengths.
C. How to face one’s weakness.
D. The value of school work.

A. a good way to find out his weak points
B. one of the best ways of earning extra money
C. of great use for his work in the future
D. a waste of time he could have spent on study
3.. From the passage we learn that if a student’s school performance is not good, he _________.
A. should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
B. will be regretful about his bad results
C. may also do well in his future work
D. should restart his study in school
4.. The underlined phrase “be all thumbs” (in Para. 3) probably means “_________”.
A. be clumsy (笨拙) at doing things B. be skillful in doing things
C. be not interested in certain things D. be easily bored in doing things
5.. From the last paragraph we know one should _________.
A. make full use of one’s own weak points B. study harder for a new school record
C. apologize for one’s own school record D. face one’s own weak points bravely

A solar pump(太阳能水泵 ) was built in a desert small village. The pump used the deserts most common resource – sunlight, to increase its greatest need, water. Solar collectors were used to collect the sun’s rays. Flat collectors were used instead of concave (凹的) collectors. Flat collectors can be still and do not have moving parts, which can be broken in sandstorms. The system used the 20C temperature difference between the solar collectors and the ground water to work a steam engine which pumped water from under the ground.
