8.We lived in a very quiet neighborhood.One evening I heard a loud crash in the street.Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks.It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenager daughter Holly practice her driving.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck.I enjoyed having it,but I said,"Guy,my heart is not set on that truck.I like it but it is just metal and won't last forever.Never set your heart on anything that won't last."
After hearing the loud noise,the whole family ran outside.My son shouted,"Dad!Dad,Holly crashed your truck."
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts.Was anyone hurt?Who else was involved?As I ran to the door,I heard a voice in my heart say,"Here is a chance to show Holly what you really love.She'll never forget it."
The accident had occurred in my own driveway.Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle,the family van (搬运车).In her inexperience,she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal.Holly was unhurt physically,but when I reached her,she was crying and saying,"Oh,Dad,I'm sorry.I know how much you love this truck."I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck.I told her the story.Her eyes moistened(湿润) and she said,"That happened to me when I was a girl.I borrowed my dad's car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road.I ruined the car.When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me."Over 40years later,she still felt the pain of that night.It was a deep wound on her soul.
I remember how sad Holly was the night and how I comforted her.One day,when Holly thinks back on her life,I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of property.I repaired the van,but the dent (凹痕) in my truck is still there today.Every day it reminds me of what really matters in my life.

81.Why did the father permit his daughter to drive his truck?(No more than 5words) (2marks)To practice her driving

84.What does the writer try to tell us according to the passage?(No more than 10words) (3marks)That love is more important than possessions.

解答 81.To practice her driving.细节理解题.第一段最后一句"let my teenager daughter Holly practice her driving"可见,作者让女儿开车目的为练习.
82.Holly had confused the brakes and the gas pedal./Holly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brakes./Holly mistook the gad pedal for the brakes. 细节理解题.第五段提到了事故的原因,即"she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal"混淆了刹车和油门.
83.Her father knocked her to the ground and kicked her./Her father was violent toward her.细节理解题."When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me"在第六段,看出来当事故发生后,她的爸爸狠狠的揍了她.

3.A four-wheeled robot, known as Rover, has been tested by a team at Sydney University. It was used to move a herd of cows from a field to a dairy(牛奶场).
Researchers were amazed at how easily cows accepted the presence of the robot. They were not disturbed by it and the gathering process was calm and effective.Because the robot moved in a steady manner it allowed cows to move at their own speed, which was important in reducing injuries among cattle, said Dr Kendra Kerrisk, dairy researcher and associate professor.
The robot was adapted from one that was already being used to monitor fruit and trees on farms.A team at Sydney University's Centre for Field Robotics improved the robot so that it could be put in a field with cows in order for the researchers to gather data on robot-cow interaction.
The robot needs to be operated by a human but it's hoped that in the future a version can be developed that will be fully automated. As well as gathering cows a new version could also collect information useful for farmers.
Using robots to get cows to the dairy will be better for their well-being."The research is in its very early stages but robotic technologies certainly have the potential to transform dairy farming,"said Dr.Kerrisk."When we have discussed this concept with farmers they have been extremely excited and we have had a series of calls and emails asking how they can get hold of one,"she added.
The robot could also cut down the number of accidents involving humans on farms. Most dairy farmers in Australia use bikes to round up their cattle and they are one of the leading causes of injury. The team hopes that by using the robot to do the job instead, accident rates could fall.

20.Americans wear black for mourning while Chinese wear white.Westerners think of dragons as monsters.Chinese honor them as symbols of God.Chinese civilization has often shown such polarities(对立)with the West,as though each stands at extreme ends of a global string.Now in the University if California,Berkeley,a psychologist,has discovered deeper polarities between Chinese and American cultures-polarities that go to the heart of how we reason and discover truth.
His findings go gar toward explaining why American cultures seem to be aggressive and Chinese cultures so passive,when compared to each other.More importantly,the research opens the way for the peoples of the East and the West to learn from each other in basic ways.The Chinese could learn much from Western methods for determining scientific truth,said Kaiping Peng,a former Beijing Scholar,who is now a UC Berkley assistant professor of psychology.And Americans could profit enormously from he Chinese tolerance for accepting contradictions in social and personal life,he said.
"Americans have a terrible need to find out who is right in an argument,"said Peng."The problem is that at the interpersonal level you really don't need to find the truth,or maybe there isn't any."Chinese people,said Peng,are far more content to think that both sides have advantages and disadvantages,because they have a whole awareness that life is full of contradictions.They do far less blaming of the individual than do Americans,he added.
In studies of interpersonal argument,for example,when subjects were asked to deal with contradictory information resulting from conflict between a mother and a daughter or a student and a school,Peng found that Americans were"non-compromising,blaming one side-usually the mother-for the causes of the problems,demanding changes from one side to attain a solution and offering no compromise"in dealing with the conflict.Compared to this angry,blaming American method,the Chinese were paragons(模范)of compromise,finding fault on both sides and looking for solutions that moved both sides to the middle.

67.In Paragraph 1,the author sets examples in order toB.
A.expose the contradiction between Chinese and Americans
B.show the differences between Chinese culture and American culture

D.generalize the main idea of the passage
68.Compared with Americans,Chinese areD.
A.likely to find the truth in life
B.unwilling to admit their own failure
C.unwilling to have a general idea of things
D.likely to know advantages and disadvantages of things
69.The studies showC.
A.an American treats his or her mother badly
B.different ideas of treating the aged
C.different personality of Chinese and Americans

A.polarities between American and Chinese cultures
B.extreme ends of the string
C.different attitudes towards the aged

17.This is a dangerous world we live in.The number of murders goes up every year,people are dying of cancer,more people contract HIV,more teens are using drugs,etc.You know this because you have heard all the statistics on the news and in the paper.But do you really have an accurate idea what they mean?The numbers are growing up,but how do they compare to the growth in population?Are more cases of these diseases being reported because of better testing techniques,or are the diseases more common?The fact is that without knowing the background statistics mean very little.
This growing trend of reporting only part of the information is becoming dangerous.For example,several years ago a high school student reported the dangers of the chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide.This chemical,found in most cancerous tumors(肿瘤),is often found in the blood of people drunk on alcohol,and causes complete physical and mental dependence for those who take the chemical even once.After reading his report,more than 75% of his Advanced Placement Chemistry class voted to forbid this dangerous chemical!Every one of the above statements is true,yet this chemical is necessary to all life on earth.The students made the mistake because they voted knowing only a few statements and statistics,rather than the chemical's full background.
The point of this article is that one should be aware of what is and is not being said.When one finds a new fact or number,one should try to consider other important information before forming an opinion with only half-truths.Always remember that the author is trying to convince you of his or her own view,and will leave out information that is different to his view.For example,look again at the statistics that suggest skiing is safe.Only 32people may die each year when skiing,while 897die from lightning strikes,but which is really the most dangerous?If you think about it,you realize far fewer people go skiing each year than the number of people who are in danger of a lightning strike.When you think about it,skiing is more dangerous than you might at first think when looking at statistics.If we teenagers are to be left in this world,we had better be able to think critically,and form our own views,rather than be easily persuaded by another's.To be warned is to be prepared.

47.In the first paragraph,what problem does the writer want to warn us?C
A.We are now living in a dangerous world.
B.We get a lot of false statistics from the media.
C.Statistics alone without full background doesn't give us an accurate pictures of things.
D.There are around us more and more murders,diseases,etc.
48.Why does the writer use the example in the second paragraph?B
A.To argue that high school students are easily persuaded.
B.To show the danger of reporting only part of the information.
C.To prove what is necessary to us might be dangerous.
D.To warn us of the harmful substance around us.
49.Relative information is often left out becauseC.
A.Relative information is not that important.
B.too much information will make readers feel confused.
C.the author is trying to show what he or she says is true.
D.readers are not able to analyze so much information at once.
50.What can we learn from the passage?A
A.We should learn to think critically and look at problems from all sides.
B.Some measures must be taken to protect our dangerous world.
C.The growing trend of reporting only half-truths is getting out of control.
D.Teenagers ought to improve their ability of telling right from wrong.
