    SARS in a German's Eyes

    　　A German working in Beijing, who asked not to be named, has personal reasons to regret the SARS outbreak(爆发). For he took the decision to send his wife and young son home as a safety precaution(预防).

    　　He said: “I won't be able to see them because they will be home for at least a month. Also it has been very sad to see some friends lose their jobs as a result of SARS.”

    You Mi, a lovely and confident 17-year-old student, is the first Chinese high school student to appear on the cover of the popular young adults’ fashion magazine Seventeen.

         “You is IN,” said Wang Lihua, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. “She is active and mature(成熟的) because of her knowledge on everything from academic studies, to books on art, to movies. We found she’s the very style we’re looking for to represent young people’s attitudes.”

        You also impressed Wang with her fluent English when they first met last year. As the hostess of an English broadcasting programme at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University, You is always praised for speaking English almost like a native speaker. “I’ve built up my English by watching thousands of English DVDs since I was 10,” she explained.

        But for You, watching isn’t enough. Last year, while in Senior 1, she met a talented boy who showed self-made DV movies at the English Corner in her school.

       　“I thought it was so cool and I knew that I should start making my own films,” she said. So she wrote a campus(校园) story, persuaded schoolmates to star in it and then began shooting a 30-minute DV movie, all in English. “I played one of the leading roles, actually I was everything in my film. I worked on it every single day during the SARS holidays,” she recalled. The movie finally became a big hit on campus, earning You a strong reputation(名气) as a DV movie director.

    　　But this is not the only field she wants to master. Despite being a science student, You likes art, literature and fashion design very much.

      　“There are people who can be artists, there are people who edit books, and there are people who become film producers. But I just hope to mix all the things up!” she said. “There is an old saying I believe: Chance favours only the prepared mind.”

         While many teenagers may dream of meeting with pop star Jay Chou or NBA hero Yao Ming, Li Jing

    officials in the future. Putin smiled and answered he hopes they can do whatever job suits their interests
    and personalities.
         Although Li would only have several minutes, she started working on her interview questions last
    August after applying for the opportunity. "Journalists work is by no means easy. You need to do lots of
    homework on your interviewee," she said. She read many books about Putin and Russia in her spare
    time.?
    Li's parents encouraged her to be a student journalist. "We fully support her, as long as it does not affect
    her studies," said her father. Previously in her job for a student magazine, Chinese Young Journalists, she
    wrote a letter to President Hu Jintao during the SARS epidemic.

         I credit my typing skills to so many hours of chatting online. Unfortunately, as my typing speed increased
    on the Internet, all grammatical rules went out of the window. You see, instant messengers have their own
    shorthand language and grammar isn't important, of which even a newbie (新手) is aware. They can leave
    out articles, subjects, pronouns, etc. They can misspell or "re-spell" almost any word. They often ask "A/S/L"
    when they first chat. Abbreviations and capitalizations are particularly important. English-speaking instant
    messengers also refuse to burden themselves with punctuation and capitalization.
         After I came back China, I discovered not one but two instant messaging crazes. The first, which brought
    back memories of my previous addiction to the computer, was QQ. I can see evidence that the Chinese have
    the same kind of separate instant messaging language, even when they chat in English. My first word in this
    language, for example, was "ft". This abbreviation for"faint" is used whenever there is a need to express
    surprise. I also discovered that the Chinese use the same kind of abbreviation for a laugh. And there is an
    extraordinary number of smileys and icons available to express every emotion and reaction, from the traditional
    "sleepy" and"doubtful" smileys to the "vomit" and "army soldier" smileys. There's even a SARS smiley.
         After QQ, there is another, perhaps more widespread, messaging trend. You guessed it-cell phone text
    messaging. I now understand how useful text messaging is and why it is so common. I admit that I have been
    guilty of sending text messages while walking outside or sitting on the subway. Who hasn't? No matter where
    I go, I see people on their cell phones, messaging. In fact, it's rare to see someone actually talking on their
    phone!
         So it looks as if there's no escape from the instant messaging crazes, no matter where in the world I go.
    And that's plainly not going to change. In the end, though, I can't complain: instant messaging is quick, it's
    cheap, it's easy and it's extreme fun too. And after all, everybody's doing it.
