M：Well, the forest is full of living things．For example, you can find about four hundred different kinds of birds in just one square kilometre． W：Really?How interesting!Well, time’s up．Dr Lewis, thanks for sharing all these with us． (Text 10) M：Now, here’s a story about Captain Cook．He is a famous British nevigator and explorer．And he is the man who put Australia on the map．In the early 18th century, Captain Cook saw an unusual animal eating grass in the distance during his first visit to Australia．The animal had a long tail and jumped along on its large legs．To his great surprise, the unusual animal carried its young in a special pocket of flesh．Captain Cook pointed at the animal and asked his native guide what the animal was．But the guide seemed not to know what he was pointing at and finally said“Kang-a-roo”．When Captain Cook asked the native people about the unusual animal using the name“Kang-a-roo”, they looked puzzled．Later, Captain Cook discovered what the native guide really meant by saying“Kang-a-roo”and langhed． “Kang-a-roo”refers to“I don’t know what you are pointing at．”Funny enough, the name“Kang-a-roo”is still in use today． |
