    2．Researchers around the world have been trying their hand at making better use of the huge amount of wind energy available in nature to produce clean energy．Apart from this，studies are being carried out to harness（利用） usable wind energy produced by man-made technologies．
    One useful source identified by Indian inventor Santosh Pradhan about two years ago is a speeding train，which produces fierce wind that can be transformed into electricity．
    According to Pradhan's proposal，with a few small improvements in existing trains running in Mumbai，the largest city in India，at least 10，000megawatts（兆瓦） of electricity could be harvested each day．
    Building on this principle，designers Ale Leonetti Luparinia and Qian Jiang from Yanko Design have created a device（装置） called T-Box that harnesses wind energy from speeding trains．
    T-Box can be placed within the railway tracks．It is half-buried underground between the concrete sleepers（水泥枕木），which does not disturb the normal train operating at all．According to Yanko，around 150T-Boxes can be fitted along a 1，000-meter railway track．
    A train running at a speed of 200kph can produce winds blowing at 15miles a second．Based on this calculation，150T-Boxes can produce 2.6KWH of electricity per day．The T-Box's design won a silver medal in last year's Lite-On Awards and was exhibited last summer at the Xue Xue Institute in Taipei，Taiwan Province．
    Though the figures look impressive，it is important to remember that the design is still at a conceptual stage and hasn't taken into account issues such as pieces of waste material produced by the device and the efforts and costs involved in the maintenance（维护） of the device．
    We can expect the technology to see the light of the day only after it clears these issues．If so，rail travel，one of the greenest forms of travel，will become greener and more energy-efficient．

    A new map of 151countries has revealed exactly which parts of the globe deliver long and happy lives for their citizens．The results may surprise you，with Costa Rica，Colombia and Vietnam topping the league．The UK features at position 44-higher than Germany （47），Spain （62），Canada （65），Australia （76）and the US （105）．
    The map was made by the relocation website Movehub，using data from the latest Happy Planet Index （HPI）-a global measure of sustainable wellbeing（可持续幸福）．
    The HPI measures life expectancy（平均寿命），the level of well-being experienced and ecological（生态的） footprint．Each of the three aspects is given a traffic-light score based on thresholds for good （green），middling （amber） and bad （red） performance．These scores are combined to an expanded six-color traffic light for the overall HPI score，where，to achieve bright green-the best of the six colors，a country would have to perform well on all three individual components．
    Experienced well-being：This was assessed using a question called the‘Ladder of Life'． This asks respondents to imagine a ladder，where 0represents the worst possible life and 10the best possible life，and report the step of the ladder they feel they currently stand on．
    Life expectancy：Alongside experienced well-being，the Happy Planet Index includes a universally important measure of health-life expectancy．We used life expectancy data from the 2011UNDP Human Development Report．
    Ecological Footprint：The HPI uses the Ecological Footprint promoted by the environmental charity WWF as a measure of resource consumption．It is a per capita（人均） measure of the amount of land required to sustain a country's consumption pattern．
    Two of the three main factors are directly about happiness．The third （Ecological footprint） is regarded as sustainable happiness．i．e．whether a country could sustain its citizens without any outside help．The idea is that if there was an incident which cut a country completely off from the outside world，or a country had to be completely self-sufficient，most of the developed world would be unable to do that．
    The reason for some high-income nations to score significantly below other nations is the ecological footprint left on the planet．Mexicans and Canadians both appear to be happier than their US neighbor-most likely due to the country's ecological footprint．

    3．Handwriting has existed for about 6，000years．It's one of our most important inventions．Without it，we wouldn't be able to record knowledge or pass ideas from one generation to the next．
    Most of us know，but often forget，that handwriting is not natural．It's not like seeing or talking，which are what we are born with．In early America，only wealthy men and businessmen learned to write．A"good hand"became a sign of class and intelligence as well as morality．Most，meanwhile，signed legal documents with a mere‘X'and the presence of a witness．Writing only spread to the masses in the 19th century，after schools began teaching handwriting．
       67  -left-handed students often had their arm tied tightly to their bodies，so they'd learn to write with the"correct"hand．In more modern times，you may remember spending hours learning the correct stroke（笔画），formation and spacing of upper-and lower-case letters．
    But today，schools are shifting the focus to coursework in STEM-short for science，technology，engineering and mathematics．With limited hours and an increased pressure to meet higher standards，teachers are emphasizing technology and tablets and less of the written word．
    Technology has threatened writing long before every man，woman and child carried a phone．It came with the invention of the typewriter，which standardized written communication，and that same argument will reappear as technology advances．
    I don't know if handwriting will ever die．But today，the growing emphasis on typing is having far-reaching effects．To get a glimpse of the future，just look at the youth．Instead of curly Qs or crazy Ls，kids are using emoticons such as ? or Λ to give a personal touch．
    Typing is more democratic，too-it isn't a complicated skill to master．Keyboards are changing the physical connection between writers and text，and people who can't write by hand，like the blind，can now use tools to communicate only by touch．
    I suppose it's easy to grieve over the passing of one era （年代） into another．Sure，I'll miss the writing of letters，and the beautiful and well-practiced signature written with a pen．And while some pathways in our brains will weaken with the decline of handwriting，we'll develop new ones as we swipe （滑动） and double-click our way into the future．
