I told my friend Graham that I often cycle the two miles from my house to the town centre but
unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. He replied, "You mean fortunately." He explained that
I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to grumble as I approached it but now I tell
myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get
fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally as I wend my way up the incline I
console myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on
stationery exercise bicycles when I can get the same value for free. I have a smug smile of satisfaction
as I reach the top of the hill.
Problems are there to be faced and overcome. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person
to gain a University degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational. She wrote, "Character
cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul
be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved."
One of the main determinants of success in life is our attitude towards adversity. From time to
time we all face hardships, problems, accidents, afflictions and difficulties. Some are of our making
but many confront us through no fault of our own. Whilst we cannot choose the adversity we can
choose our attitude towards it.
The biographies of great people are littered with examples of how they took these kinds of steps
to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common thread is that they did not become defeatist or
depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.

1. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A. Attitude makes difference
B. Well begun is half done.
C. The early bird gets the worm.
D. Easier said than done.

2. From Helen Keller's example we can infer that__________.

A. Great people are born to be great and successful
B. Life is hard and difficult so we have to give up
C. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life
D. Practice makes people successful and powerful

3. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he/she continues to write?

A. Some examples of our daily life.
B. His stories of overcoming difficulties.
C. Stories of some unlucky great people.
D. Some examples of his friend Graham.

4. The underlined word "adversity " in the fourth paragraph probably NOT refers to ______.

A. problems
B. difficulties
C. hardships
D. advertisements

I wasn't interested in becoming a model at first. I worked as a receptionist in a beauty shop during high school. It was in South Dakota. A woman who had worked for Vogue-a famous fashion magazine said to me, "Why don't you go to New York and be a model?"
So I went to New York at eighteen. I went to the first model agency, they thought that I was too
long-waisted. It was too bad since I came from South Dakota. I looked up in the telephone book. Hunting Hartford had just bought the agency. So I went there. I was in such a hurry that I couldn't give my name to the receptionist. About half an hour later, the man who had just taken over the agency-he had been a male model before-came in. I was just staring at this unfamiliar man when he said, "You! Come into my office!"
How do you feel as a fashion model? Quite OK, I should say. But you stop thinking when you are
working. It takes a lot of nervous energy as well because the camera goes one, two, three very fast and
you have to move very fast. I like my job because it gives me freedom. I can have half a day off to do
things I like. I can't do that if I do a normal job. I never like becoming a secretary. They have to sit in the
office for eight hours a day, facing the same people.
Most models, after one or two years, can't be still very interested in it. But I like being a model.
Maybe I was a born one, as many people say.
1. Who inspired the author's desire to become a model?
A. A woman customer in the beauty shop.
B. Hunting Hartford.
C. The author herself.
D. The author's father.
2. Why didn't the author return to South Dakota when she was first refused?
A. Because she had a strong desire to become a model.
B. Because South Dakota is far away from New York.
C. Because Hunting Hartford asked her not to go back.
D. Because she liked to be a receptionist at a beauty shop.
3. Which of the following is not true?
A. Hunting Hartford had an experience as a model.
B. Hunting Hartford thought the author might be a good model.
C. Hunting Hartford had always been a model agent.
D. Hunting Hartford accepted the author as a model.
4. Why did the author like being a model?
A. Because she liked the woman customer.
B. Because she liked the freedom.
C. Because she liked to have a regular work schedule.
D. Because she liked Hunting Hartford.
5. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Perseverance leads to your success.
B. Finding a job you like to do is important.
C. Both A and B.
D. Becoming a model is quite easy.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have
cereal (谷类食物), eggs or toast. While others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a
sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from other kids' too. But_at_least_I_wasn't
_alone_in_my_sufferings.   My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends
were and where we were going. She insisted if we said we'd be gone an hour, then we be gone one
hour or less-not one hour and one minute. And she always insisted upon us telling the truth. Now you
can see how mean she was.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morning.
We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook. We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath,
while the other kids always wore their clothes for days. I believe she laid awake at night thinking up
mean things to do to us.
Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed, "sick" like our friends did,
and miss school. Our marks in school had to be up to par(达到正常水平). Our friends' report cards
had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, being as different as she
was, would settle for nothing less than ugly black marks.
As the years rolled by, we were one by one put to shame. We were graduated from high school.
With our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure
of being a dropout.
My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Out of four children, a couple of us attained some
higher education. And whom do we have to blame for the terrible way we turned out? You're right,
our mean mother. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.
Now I am trying to raise my three children. I am filled with pride when my children call me mean.
Because, you see, I had the meanest mother in the world.

1. What does the sentence "But at least I wasn't alone in my sufferings." mean?
A. The author's mother was only mean to her.
B. The author's mother suffered her.
C. The author's mother was mean to her sister, brothers and her.
D. The author wasn't alone because of suffering.

2. According to the passage, the author's mother will ask her children to do all the following
     EXCEPT ________.
A. learn to cook
B. wear clean clothes
C. go to bed and get up at fixed time
D. drink as much Cokes as they want

3. Why was the author's mother mean to her children?
A. Because she wanted her children to be top students in school.
B. Because she wanted her children to bring home colored report cards like her friends did.
C. Because she wanted her children to drop out.
D. Because she wanted her children to do their best at school and be educated and respected citizens.

4. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Some of the children weren't able to go to college because of their mean mother.
B. Mother didn't let the author tell lies.
C. Mother asked the author to wear clean clothes.
D. The author could not miss school even if she was ill.

5. What's the main idea of the passage?
A. The kind mother.
B. The meanest mother
C. The failure mother
D. The successful mother

I am truly saddened about what is going on in my school district, especially in the school where I am
currently working.
Why are so many students not doing well? Why is there such a huge achievement gap between urban
and suburban students? Just this week, in my school the seventh grade team leader called a meeting to
discuss academic detention (放学后留校). The purpose of the detention is to allow students who are
doing poorly a second chance to redo the work. Now if a student did not understand an assignment I
have no trouble allowing that student to redo a test or give some extra credit work, but if a student did
poorly because he/she opted(选择) not to do the work out of sheer laziness, that student should not be
given a second chance.
And parents should be held accountable for their children. That is another reason why there is such a
huge achievement gap. All children should be monitored at home in order to achieve great success in
school. Perhaps it might be a great idea for urban school districts to offer free classes to parents on how
to help their students at home. Of course this idea is far fetched, after all we do not want to offend the
parents. What we will do instead is to spend a fortune on teacher training because if the kids are not
doing well it must be the fault of the teacher. That kind of mindset, if allowed to continue will be a perfect
recipe for greater achievement gaps.
I started working at my current school in August and I have been in the teaching field for 25 years.
What I believe is that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that  horse drink. You can't
force kids to change bad habits over  night, nor can we afford to lower standards just so a kid can  pass
a class.

1. The seventh grade team leader in the author's school called    a meeting to ________.
A. analyse the reason for the huge achievement gap between students
B. find out who is to blame for the huge achievement gap between students
C. talk about giving students who are doing poorly a second  chance to redo the work
D. discuss how to narrow the huge achievement gap between students

2. The author believes that a student can be given a second chance ________.
A. if he did poorly the first time
B. for whatever reason he did poorly the first time
C. if he failed the first time in spite of his efforts
D. if he comes from a suburban area

3. In the last paragraph, the author intends to tell us that ________.
A. a student can make improvement only when he is willing to
B. teachers are to blame if his students are doing poorly
C. the school should force those students to work harder if   they're doing poorly
D. the school should treat different students with different standards

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your
age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two
feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of
showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them
are clutching (紧握) at one another's hands for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new
directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled (聚在一起) round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thusandsuch a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out
of their cocoon (蚕茧) into a larger_cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his
or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn
from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come
to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the
teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to
classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is
collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don't care to share at once with your
classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-with the people who respect
you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

1. In this passage, the author wants to tell ________.
A. teenagers to try to pursue their real selves
B. readers to try to be popular with people around
C. parents to try to control and guide their children
D. people to try to understand and respect each other

2. The author disapproves of rebelling teenagers ________.
A. growing away from their parents
B. following the popularity trend
C. walking a new way on their own
D. turning to their friends for help

3.The phrase "larger cocoon" at the end of the second paragraph refers to ________.
A. the distractive and variable society
B. the dazzling music world
C. the parental care and love
D. the popularity wave in the society

4. What does the author think of advertisements?
A. Convincing.
B. Instructive.
C. Influential.
D. Authoritative.

5. According to the author, what might happen when a teenager stands up against the popularity
wave and follows his/her own path?
A. He/She falls behind the time.
B. He/She loses good friends.
C. He/She faces all kinds of criticism.
D. He/She gains valuable popularity.
