Using Garbage as a Fuel

Garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look 【1】 coal, petroleum, or natural gas, but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as 2 energy source. Burning garbage 3 ( be) not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States 4 (burn) garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby 5 ( build). In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city’s garbage each year. The amount of energy 6 (produce) is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil!

But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns 7 (easy) , such as food and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials 8 do not. Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air. Our fossil fuel supplies are 9 (limit) . Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage 【10 (pile) up on the earth.

【1】like

【2】an

【3】is

【4】have been burning

【5】buildings

【6】produced

【7】easily

【8】that/ which

【9】limited

【10】piling

【1】like 固定词组:look like看起来像---一样,故填like。

故填have been burning。

【8】that/ which 考查定语从句。other materials是先行词,指物,从句缺少引导词,缺少主语,故填that/ which.

an important meeting 一个重要的会议;an interesting story 一个有趣的故事;an old man 一位老人;an hour 一小时;an honest boy 一个诚实的男孩;an American lawyer一个美国的律师; a useful tool 一个有用的工具;a European friend一位欧洲的朋友。

Dog owners now have a little help understanding their angry friends. A new device called Bow-Lingual “translates” dog barks into English, Korea or Japanese.

Bow-Lingual’s Japanese inventors spent much time and money analyzing dog barks. They found that dog noises can be broken down into six different emotions: happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, assertion and desire. Part of the Bow-Lingual device hangs on the dog’s collar. The other part is a handle-held unit for the owner. When the dog barks, the unit displays translated phrases.

Some people have scoffed at Bow-Lingual. “Who would pay US $ 120 to read a dog’s mind?” they ask, but those who have purchased Bow-Lingual praise the device. Pet owner Keiko Egawa, of Japan, says it helps her empathize with her dog, Harry. “Before we go to the park, he always says he wants to play,” says Egawa, “and after a walk, he always says he is hungry.

Could your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.

Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病). Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. “It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk,” said Carpenter.

But others believe these concerns are unjustified. Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones, ” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger.”

Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness — so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk.

【1】From the passage we can learn that some people are worried because ________.

A. they have evidence that the use of cellphones can lead to cancer

B. they make a fuss over cellphone use

C. some experts have given a warning

D. cellphones are responsible for brain tumors

2】By saying “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones,” Dr Martha Linet has the idea that ________.

A. the worrying is unnecessary

B. cancer-warning labels should be on cellphones

C. there is a link between cellphones and cancer

D. cellphones have nothing to do with cancer

3】Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?

A. Optimistic. B. Objective.

C. Opposite. D. Casual.

4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Cellphones: is there a cancer link?

B. There is a link between cellphone and cancer

C. A research on the cellphone

D. The cellphone and radiation epidemiology
