As in the field of space travel, new technologies continue to appear in undersea exploration. They share a number of similarities with each other — as well as some important differences.

Manned submersibles (潜水器), like spaceships, must maintain living conditions in an unnatural environment. While a spaceship must simply be sealed against the vacuum space, a submersible must be able to bear extreme pressure if it is not to break up in deep water.

In exploring space, unmanned vehicles were employed before astronauts. In undersea exploration, on the other hand, men paved the way, and only recently have unmanned remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) been put to use.

One reason for this is that communicating with vehicles in orbit is much easier than talking to those underwater. A vacuum is an ideal medium for radio communications, but underwater communications are limited to much slower sound waves. Thus, most undersea vehicles — particularly ROVs — operate at the end of long ropes.(电缆终端)

For a similar reason, knowing where you are undersea is much more difficult than in space. A spaceship’s position can be located by following its radio signal, or by using telescopes and radar. For an undersea vehicle, however, a special network of sonar (声纳系统)devices must be laid out in advance on the ocean floor in the area of a dive to locate the vehicle’s position.

Though undersea exploration is more challenging than outer space in a number of respects, it has a distinct advantage: going to the ocean depths doesn’t require the power necessary to escape Earth’s gravity. Thus, it remains far less expensive.

The purpose of the passage is ______.

A. to persuade you to explore the depths of the ocean

B. to stress the importance of the undersea exploration

C. to make you believe that the undersea exploration is better

D. to tell some differences between two kinds of explorations

By saying “men paved the way” in Paragraph 2 the author means that in undersea exploration ______.

A. unmanned vehicles were used in the beginning

B. men covered the ocean floor with stones and bricks

C. manned vehicles were employed before unmanned ones

D. men invented unmanned remote-operated vehicles in the past

The sonar devices must be placed ______.

A. from time to time

B. after the undersea vehicles dive

C. before the undersea vehicles dive

D. when the undersea vehicles are diving

What can we infer from the passage?

A. Submersibles usually break up in deep water.

B. Undersea vehicles can receive signals immediately.

C. Going to space needs power to escape the gravity.

D. Radio communications are quite difficult in a vacuum.

[1] Imagine a magical forest where the trees touch the sky. Due to enough rainfall, the trees grow huge and spread wide. Their tallest branches are so thick-leafed that they create a thick curtain. Even the wind does not find enough space to blow as it pleases. The climate is good for life forms of all kinds- from trees to animals, birds and insects.

[2] These forests are called tropical rainforests. Most of them are located near the equator, in Asia, Africa and South America. The rainforest of the Amazon basin in South America is one of the lushest(茂盛的) rainforests in the world. You will find more varieties of trees or animal life here than anywhere else in the world.

[3] The tropical rainforests are called the green lungs of the planet. They absorb carbon dioxide from around them to process their food and release oxygen into the air. They also contain the largest number of trees with medicinal value.

[4] But now human beings are out to        . Many companies all over the world, especially in the West, have been attacking these rainforests for a variety of reasons – some want to make profit by cutting down trees and selling timber(木材); others are trying to be the only ones to make profit out of medicinal plants.

[5] To the outside world, the rainforest has always seemed a very dangerous place. Generations of films and literature have shown the people who live in the rainforests as dangerous and violent people who have a strange way of life.

[6] But actually, these people have a better understanding of their relationship with their environment than modern man has. Greed for profit by destroying the planet’s resources is a unique quality of societies that have become modern and use technology. One should then ask, who is more violent?

American women experience a great variety of lifestyle. A typical American woman may be single. She may also be divorced or married. She may be a homemaker, a doctor or a factory worker. It is very difficult to generalize about American women. However, one thing that many American women have in common is their attitudes about themselves and their roles in American life.

Historically, American women have always been very independent. The first settlers to come to New England were ten young couples that had left behind their extended families. The women were alone in a new, undeveloped country with their husbands. This has two important effects. First of all, this was the uncivilized environment that demanded every person to share in developing it and in survival. Women worked with their husbands and children to make themselves accepted in this new land. Second, because they were in a new land without the established influence of older members of society, women felt free to step into non—traditional roles.

This role of women was strengthened in later years as Americans move west again, leaving families behind and meeting a new environment. Even later, in the east, as new settlers arrived, women often found jobs more easily than men. Women became the supporters of the family.

Within the established lifestyle of the industrialized twentieth century, the strong role of women was not attractive as in the early days of the country. Some women stepped into the men’s jobs as factory and business workers. After the war, some women stayed in these positions, and others left their jobs with a new sense of ability.

1.A typical American woman is______________.

A.single or married                       B. divorced

C.sure about herself and her role             D. all of the above

2. During the industrialized twentieth century, the role of women__________.

A.was found out

B.was as important as before.

C.declined

D.was stronger than that of the early days

3. Women took part in men’s job during the time of_________.

A.the Second World War

B. the Westward Movement

C. the early immigration

D. the industrialized twentieth century.
