The Power of Appreciation
Lilly was a French Canadian girl who grew up in the farming community. When she was 16, she had to drop school. With English as her second language and poor education, the future didn’t look bright for Lilly.
Lilly’s father told Lilly to find a job. One day, Lilly saw a sign at a big company. Cautiously, she knocked on her very first door. In her broken English, Lilly told the office manager she was interested in the secretarial position. The manage decided to give her a chance. He directed her to type a single letter, and then left. It was 11: 40 a. m. Lilly thought everyone would be leaving for lunch, when she could slip away in the crowd. But she knew she should attempt the letter.
On her first try, Lilly got through one line of five words and made four mistakes. On her second attempt, she completed a full paragraph, but still made many mistakes. She looked at the clock:11:55——five minutes to freedom. Just then, the manager walked in. He came directly over to Lilly, read the letter and said, “Lilly, you’re doing excellent work!”
With those simple words of encouragement, her desire to escape disappeared and her confidence began to grow. Lilly thought, “Well, if he think it’s good, then it must be good. I think I’ll stay!” Lilly did stay——all because someone had given a shy and uncertain girl the gift of self-confidence when she knocked on the door.

Lilly was a girl lacking confidence who hesitated to apply for a job, but a simple sentence "You did great!" from the manager gave her great encouragement, making her succeed at last.
From this story we can see how powerful appreciation is. A smile, a praise word, even an admiring look can make great difference. I remember once I failed an exam and felt depressed, but the teacher said to me “Though you failed this time ,you have already made great progress”. Her words greatly encouraged me and filled me with confidence. I worked even harder and got satisfying results at last.
In my opinion, the sweetest of all sounds is praise, which can not only bring happiness to others but also give them confidence to change for the better. “Praise is like sunlight to the human spirit; without which we cannot flower and grow.”I hope everyone can realize its power and learn to use it.

Dolphins call out the specific names of loved ones when they become separated, a study finds．Other than humans, they are the only animals known to do this, according to the study．The big difference with dolphins is that these communications consist of whistles（鸣叫）, not words．
Earlier research found that dolphins have a “signature whistle” that would be somewhat like human shouting, “Hey everybody! I’m an adult healthy male named George, and I mean you no harm．”
The new finding is that dolphins also say the names of certain other dolphins．“Animals produced copies of the same sound when they were separated from a close partner．This supports our belief that dolphins copy another animal’s signature whistle when they want to reunite with that animal,” Stephanie King, who led the study, says．
King and her colleagues collected acoustic（声音的）data from wild dolphins around Sarasota Bay, Florida, from 1984 to 2009．The researchers also studied four adult male dolphins housed at the Seas Aquarium, also in Florida．
Those males are adults that keepers named Calvin, Khyber, Malabar and Ranier, all of whom, as well as all of the wild ones, developed their own signature whistles that served as names in communication with other dolphins．
“A dolphin uses its signature whistle to broadcast its identity and announce its presence．The signature whistles allow animals to identify one another over long distances and allow animals to recognize one another and to join up with each other,” King explains．“Dolphin whistles can be heard up to 20km away, depending on water depth and whistle frequency（频率）．”
The researchers said dolphins copy the signature whistles of loved ones, such as a mother, when the two are separated．These “names” are always used in positive situations, and are only directed toward loved ones．
While researchers are often unwilling to apply the word language to non-human communications, dolphins clearly have a very complex communication system．

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in–depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).

She almost did not run. Christine Williams admits that now. She could barely put one foot after another following the wake(守灵) for her sister, who had died in an automobile accident. But she did run. When they arrived at the hotel, the entire team was waiting up for her.
Everybody knew about it at the regional meet. Degnan had to arrange for the flexibility of an alternate, just in case Christine could not go. She thought about Jennifer. And she ran. She finished fourth in 22 minutes 58 seconds, breaking the Post record for the 6-kilometer distance by 15 seconds. And although the Post team didn’t qualify for the nationals, Christine did.
