【答案】Dear Peter,

I am very sorry to hear that you had to stay at home to prevent COVID-19 spreading. It is frustrating and hard to adapt to such a situation. Here are some suggestions I want to offer you.

To begin with, I strongly suggest that you choose some books you really want to read because reading can teach you some wisdom and broaden your horizons. In addition, it is also a good idea to find some hands-on activities, for example, cooking food for your family or do some painting, which will certainly strengthen your family bond and arouse your creativity. Most importantly, you are supposed to take a positive attitude to life and believe everything will pick up soon.

【题目】 You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?

That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虚拟)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.

An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history, with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando.

In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The lock down method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years.

In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen simply turns black slowly.

If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared.

SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence. Gallo says.

B.To show the challenge that the readers are required to face.

D.To inform the readers of the correct response in such a situation

2What is the suggested response in the standard active shooter training?

A.Fighting the shooter

B.Running for the exit

C.Using a computer as a weapon

D.Locking down

3What does Gallo think of the training programs involving role play with toy guns?

A.SearingB.Violent

C.IneffectiveD.Helpful

4What would be the best title?

A.A New Virtual Reality Program on Active Shooter Training

B.What Should You Do When Meeting Gunshots in the Workplace?

C.How to Deal with an Active Shooter Situation?

D.Employees Need to Be Scared of the Workplace Violence.

【题目】 Recently, as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his high school team, I started to feel sorry for myself and for him. His team was facing adversity (逆境) — it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was left behind for three quarters of the game.

As for me, I had been fired earlier in the day. I was prepared for it as I had experienced the same thing 14 years earlier, but, just like a punch in the mouth, the blow is never softened because you were expecting it.

As I watched the adversity on the court that my son was experiencing, I recalled my earlier events, packing up everything in a box and waving goodbye to a great group of colleagues with whom I’d had the pleasure of working. During my driving home, I kept telling myself “Just like that time, I will find work again in a short time—I am confident in my experience and abilities.” It was the same belief that I tried to teach my son.

The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing. As Nathan and his teammates fought back, I saw the focus and determination on him, as well as his teammates’faces. Then, with a tie game and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball. There was no room for self-doubt. With skill and confidence he was able to tune out all that could drive his attention away and make the throw as if he had done it a thousand times. The joy on his face, the cheering from the crowd, and the silence on the other side of the gym—it was a moment that would make any parent proud.

As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me that I had taught him determination in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses, at this moment.

1What did the author intend to show by mentioning his experience 14 years ago?

A.He quit a job again.B.He disliked working with the colleagues.

C.He made a right career choice.D.He had confidence in his abilities.

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.Nathan’s teammates couldn’t focus on the play.

B.The author was never worried about his son’s team.

C.Nathan’s team lost the game at last.

D.The game was in a tie at one time.

3What is the passage mainly about?

A.A blow from losing a job.B.A lesson on the court.

C.The importance of teamwork.D.The rise and fall of a game.
