【答案】Dear Mr. Li,

Knowing that our school will need some volunteers to give British exchange students a reception on summer vacation, I want to apply for this position.

If I’m chosen as one of volunteers, I would like to warmly welcome the students who are from our British sister school. In order to make he/she happy, I have prepared some activities. First of all, I’ll invite he/she to taste Shanghai local cuisine, such as soup dumplings and spring onion pancake, which will let he/she feel the charm of Shanghai food. At the same time, I’ll take he/she to the Oriental Pearl's Tower where people can sightsee, dine, shop, entertain and lodge. In this place, he/she can have a sweeping view of the city and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Shanghai.

I believe that I can successfully complete the reception task. I’ll appreciate it if you choose me. Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Zhang Hua

【题目】 The Mars 2020 rover(02W), which sets off for the Red Planet this year, will not only search for traces of ancient life, but pave the way for future human missions, NASA scientists said Friday as they introduced the vehicle.

The rover has been constructed in a large, sterile room at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, near Los Angeles, where its driving equipment was given its first successful test last week.

Shown to invited journalists on Friday, it is scheduled to leave Earth in July 2020 from Floridas Cape Canaveral, becoming the fifth US rover to land on Mars seven months later in February.

“It's designed to seek the signs of life, so we’re carrying a number of different instruments that will help us understand the geological and chemical context on the surface of Mars,” deputy mission leader Matt Wallace told AFP.

Among the devices on board the rover are 23 cameras, two “ears” that will allow it to listen to Martian winds, and lasers used for chemical analysis.

Approximately the size of a car, the rover is equipped with six wheels like the former US rover, Curiosity, allowing it to travel along rocky land.

Speed is not a priority for the vehicle, which only has to cover around 200 yards(180 metres) per Martian day -approximately the same as a day on Earth.

Fuelled by a tiny nuclear reactor, Mars 202(has seven-foot-long(2 metres) articulated arms and a drill to crack open rock samples in locations scientists identify as potentially suitable for life.

We are hoping to move fairly quickly. We'd like to see the next mission launched in 2026 which will get to Mars and pick up the samples, put them into a rocket and finally bring them back to the Earth, "said Wallace. NASA’s Mars 2020 will remain active for at least one Martian year, which is around two years on Earth.

【题目】 Being stuck behind crowds of slow walkers when you’re in a hurry is one of the most annoying things. But now, Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, one of the UK’s largest shopping malls, has introduced its very own fast lane(通道) for shoppers in a hurry, aiming to help impatient shoppers avoid slow walkers and the anger that goes with them.

The Lakeside Shopping Center in Essex has introduced a 720-foot “fast lane” reserved for fast walkers only, just in time for the Christmas rush. The Center’s management team said, “The lane will help the shoppers who know where they want to go quickly and don’t want to get caught in behind unhurried shoppers at the busiest time of the year.”

The fast lane was introduced after a MasterCard survey found that 80 percent of consumers found slow walkers their biggest annoyance while shopping. The research also found that the average walking speed slowed down by 21 percent during the Christmas shopping period, as most shoppers spent more time window shopping during this period.

Gary Mortimer, an expert from the Queensland University of Technology, said he wasn’t surprised by the promotion about the launch of the fast lane, and thought the concept would appeal to shoppers all over the world. “Crowded parking lots and busy shopping centers tend to be two of the biggest complaints of shoppers over the festive season,” he said. “I think the fast lanes are a new approach. However, I suspect it will be a bit like fast lanes on the highway, so it might end up being more trouble than its worth.

The MasterCard survey also identified the four most common types of shoppers. They include“Skaters” who try and make their way through crowds politely, “Dodgers” who move down the paths to avoid slow walkers, “Bulldozers" who push their way through crowds, and “Tutters” who express their frustrations to slow walkers.

1The fast lane is intended for the shoppers who____.

A.can’t move quickly because of physical disabilities

B.buy things on their shopping lists quickly

C.take their time to do window shopping

D.want to leave the mall quickly

2What is Gary Mortimer’s attitude to the fast lane?

A.Supportive.B.Indifferent.

C.Objective.D.Negative.

3Who patiently moves behind a slow crowd?

A.Skaters.B.Dodgers.

C.Bulldozers.D.Tutters.

4What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Shopping can be annoying sometimes.

B.How to avoid “slow walkers” when shopping.

C.The problems that shopping centers face during busy holidays.

D.The shopping mall creates the fast lane to avoid“slow walkers”

【题目】 Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia (百科全书), is the largest encyclopedia ever. An encyclopedia is a collection of informative articles about various things. Encyclopedias used to be printed as books. 1

“Wiki”is an internet term that means”a website that can be edited by the public. “It comes from”wikiwiki”a Hawaiian word for”quick”. Two Americans, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, created Wikipedia in 2001.2It has about 6 million articles in 300 languages and is visited by billions of people each day,who want to find information on just about anything-science, math, languages, art, cultureand company histories. There are articles on sports stars, too, and even long-forgotten soap operas from the 1970s.

3Except for a small number of pages, anyone can edit articles, anonymously (匿名地) or with a user account, and registered users can create their own articles. Editing is unpaid, although Wikipedia does employ a small staff. Wikipedia is freely available to anyone with an internet connection. Its founders hoped that the model would make use of humanity’s collective knowledge.

4Many Wikipedia pages contain errors, although the organization has a content review system that works to fix this problem. Several studies have concluded that Wikipedia is as accurate as most print encyclopedias. Indeed, a 2005 report in the journal Nature found it to be only slightly less reliable than Encyclopedia Britannica.

Today Wikipedia faces many challenges. It does not rely on advertising. 5Perhaps more importantly, the number of its volunteer editors is shrinking.

Despite these difficulties, Jimmy Wales says he will still stick to his dream. He has big plans for the future. He wants Wikipedia available in all of the world’s languages.

A.Instead, all of its funds come from donations.

B.Wikipedia employs an open editing model.

C.It allows users to get information within seconds.

D.It is now the fifth-most visited website on the Internet.

E.Most of its editors are volunteers.

F.Now,they are mostly found online.

G.However, some people doubt the accuracy of Wikipedia's content.

【题目】 Compared with solar and wind energy, which are booming, tidal (潮汐的) power is a loser in the clean-energy competition. But if you did want to build a tidal power station, there are few better sites than the mouth of the River Severn, in Britain. Its tidal range, the difference in depth between high and low tides, of around 15 metres is among the largest in the world.

Engineers and governments have been toying with the idea since at least 1925. But none of the suggested projects has materialised. Price is one objection. A study thought that tidal energy might cost between 216 and 368 ($306-521) per MWh of electricity by 2025, compared with 58-75 for seagoing wind turbines (轮机) and 55-76 for solar panels. Environmentalists also worry that any plant would change the tides, making life harder for wildlife.

An engineer called Rod Rainey thinks he has a way around both problems. He plans to replace the conventional turbines of previous plans with a much older technology. Specifically, he plans to span (横跨) the river mouth with a line of water wheels. This is a design that dates back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution. Examples can be found fixed to the sides of old watermills (水磨).

But there would be nothing old-fashioned about Mr Rainey’s wheels. Thirty metres high and sixty wide, they would be made from ordinary steel. Two hundred and fifty of them, along with the supporting structures, would be floated into place and secured to the seabed, creating a line 15km long. Together, they could supply power at an avenge ate of 4GW. That is about as much as two biggish nuclear power stations would manage. Substituting one of the wheels with a set of locks would provide a shipping channel about twice the width of Panama Canal, permitting upstream ports such as Avonmouth and Cardiff to continue operating.

1What is special about the mouth of the River Seven?

A.The tidal range there is about 15 meters.

B.It has the largest tidal range in the world.

C.The tidal power station has been built there.

D.Its power plant makes life harder for wildlife.

2What was people’s initial attitude towards tidal power?

A.Opposed.B.Supportive.

C.Controversial.D.Doubtful.

3What are the locks used for?

A.Support.B.Transportation.

C.Securing wheels.D.Producing electricity.

4What’s the best tittle for the text?

A.Rainey invented turbines.

B.Rainey’s tidal power station.

C.Tidal power in the River Seven.

D.An old idea might be made practical.
