18.Almost a decade after the hit Finding Nemo made clownfish seem totally warm and lovable, environmentalists are now looking for a real-life sequel:Saving Nemo.
In the United States,a request has been made to extend the protections of the Endangered Species Act to marine species including the clownfish.
But before you start shedding tears for Nemo and his buddies, keep in mind that this request is not based on any evidence of a decline in the clownfish population.Instead, what has sparked concern is the worsening health of coral reefs, which more than one million aquatic species including the clownfish depend on to thrive, even survive.
In ways it makes more sense to move to protect a species when its habitat declines rather than its actual population. The most important mission of the Endangered Species Act is the protection of species'habitats; without their habitats, there's almost no hope of saving endangered animals, except perhaps in a zoo.
Earlier this year, alarming news came about the world's largest coral reef system,Australia's Great Barrier Reef (GBR,大堡礁).A study has shown the Reef is in sharp decline, with half of its coral cover gone in the past 27 years.
Katharina Fabricius,an Australian coral reef ecologist co-authoring the study, has been diving and working on the GBR since 1988-and has watched the decline."There are still a lot of fish…but not the same color and diversity as in the past,"she said.
The study team used information from more than 2,000 surveys to determine the rate of decline between 1985 and 2012.That overall 50-percent decline, they estimate,is a yearly loss of about 3.4 percent of the Reef.If the trend continued, the coral cover could halve again by 2022.
Several main factors are responsible for the decline, the study found.Intense tropical cyclones (热带气旋),believed to be fueled by global warming, have caused massive damage to reefs in the central and southern parts of the Reef.Meanwhile, population explosions of the coral-consuming crown-of-thorns starfish (长棘海星) have affected coral populations along the length of the Reef. Two severe coral bleaching (变白) events, caused by ocean warming, have also had major damaging impacts in northern and central parts of the GBR.

5.The most popular trend in self--help theories these days is about positive thinking.Many  successful authors tell us that the best way to succeed and be happy is to avoid thinking about  failure and to focus on good things.One of these theories comes from a small book called How  Full is  Your Bucket(水桶)?by Tom Rath and Donald O.Clifton.The idea behind their work  is fairly simple,positive thinking from yourself and others will make your life better.
The authors say that the idea for their work is based on a historical case.During the Korean War,a large number of American troops were being held prisoners,and many of them  died in prison.A psychologist found that the reason for their death was the feel of total lack of hope the prisoners had.In other words,the authors of How Full Is Your Bucket?say it was  because of negative thinking.The story shows us the terrible power of negative emotions.
The authors of the book also believe that every interaction (相互影响) we have with other people affects us deeply.Our lives are shaped by our relationships with others.The authors  believe that experiences with others are always either good or bad but never neutral.This  brings us to the bucket idea.Imagine that everyone has a bucket.Every positive interaction  adds to the bucket,and every negative interaction takes away from it.It works whether it's  another person's negativity or your own; they both take away from your own bucket.The  best way to live is with a full bucket,which is the result of positive thinking and interactions  with the people around us.Positivity is almost like a magic cure,according to the look.It gives us energy and makes us stronger,healthier,happier and more successful.Is the secret really that simple?It's up to you to decide.

28.According to the text,when someone asks you"how full is your bucket?",what does he mean?D
A.How hard do you work?
B.How unhappy are you?
C.How disappointed do you feel?
D.How much optimistic energy do you have?
29.The authors of the book believe the prisoned American soldiers in the Korean War were killed byC.
A.terrible diseases
B.lack of food and clean water
C.the idea that they're going to die
D.cruel mental and physical punishment
30.According to the bucket theory,when interacting with others,if you are holding negative  beliefs,you areA.
A.eptying both your and others'buckets
B.emptying just your own bucket
C.filling up your own bucket
D.filling up others'buckets
31.How can we live with a full bucket?C
A.Avoid communicating with discouraged people and focus on our own happiness.
B.Carry a bucket of water with us wherever we go.C.Raise our positive energy and bring hope to others all the time.
D.Blame others for being unhappy and force them to smile.

4.In today's fast-paced society,few people take time to enjoy the midday meal.Most of us just rush right through it.We grab a quick salad,or buy a sandwich and eat at our computers,Sometimes,if there is a deadline around the comer,we just skip lunch.
The development of technology hasn't done our eating habits much good either.We are constantly distracted by e-mail,social media,and 24-hour news.Even when we do sit down for lunch,we are more connected to our hand-held electronic devices.
Long working hours can cause all kinds of health problems,and many developed countries have put in place labor laws specifically regarding the lunch break.These laws give employees the right to take a break during a long work shift,but it's up to them whether they do so or not.
Frank Partnoy,a former Wall Street trader,says that employers should encourage workers to take time off for lunch.This is because long lunch breaks can benefit both individuals and society.
Writing in The Guardian,Partnoy says that one obvious reason to take a lunch break is to slow down and gain some perspective(认识). A break from work allows us to think strategically and outside the box.It also puts our daily tasks into a broader context(背景).
What we eat at lunch is also important.In Partnoy's opinion,a fast food lunch is more harmful than not having lunch at all.And it's not just about calories and unhealthy food.Recent studies show that fast food also has negative effects on how we think.
However,if we sit down at a proper restaurant and chat leisurely with colleagues,we are more likely to slow down,something that hardly can be achieved in a noisy and over-packed fast food chain.
Despite these benefits,some employees might still be unwilling to take time off for lunch.Partnoy's suggestion?Make skipping lunch difficult:Employers could ask workers to fill out a form stating their reasons for skipping the meal.

36.What does the underlined phrase"skip lunch"mean in the first paragraph?A
A.don't have lunch  B.have a quick lunch
C.work while having lunch   D.take a lunch break
37.Which of the following is true according to the text?C
A.Modern technology results in good diet habits.
B.Electronic devices make our life comfortable.
C.Many people are too busy to have a good lunch.
D.Laws have passed to make workers have lunch.
38.According to Frank Partnoy,long lunch breaksA.
A.are time for the workers to relax their mind
B.make the employees work longer hours
C.are for employees to have a quick lunch
D.make the workers eat a proper lunch at home
39.In Partnoy's opinion,a fast food lunchC.
A.saves a lot of time for a rest
B.is better than having no lunch
C.affects people's way of thinking
D.makes workers sit down and think
40.What might be the author's purpose in writing the text?D
A.To warn us not to eat fast food.
B.To introduce Frank Partnoy's opinion.
C.To encourage us to work more efficiently.
D.To show the importance of a proper lunch.
