6.The art of reading fiction is largely a matter of inferring meanings. To infer means to understand facts which are not directly stated-only suggested.Inference is one of the commonest ways of knowing things a child holds his knee and cries; this action implies his feeling; aji observer infers that the child hurt.To infer accurately in everyday life requires caution in observing; to infer skillfully in fiction requires caution in reading; both require disciplined imagination.
The short-story reader can expect to find certain basic elements in any story. For example, all stories involve a person or persons,in a particular setting, faced with a demand for a response. The response called for may be a physical action, such as defeating an adversary (对手) or escaping from a danger; or it may be a mental action, such as adjusting to others or within oneself. In either case, the short story is a description in two ways first,it shows the motives for a given, human action; second,it makes a point about the general human situation.Such descriptions, however, rather than being stated directly, usually are implied by the elements of the story.
When the reader of a story understands all the facts and their interrelationships,he is ready to infer the significance of the story as a whole-its comment on the human situation. This comment,or theme,is the seed from which the story grew.It is also the idea by which all the separate elements of the story are governed, while these in turn further shape and modify the theme. In addition to action, character, and setting, these elements include structure, mood, tone, and point of view.
Fiction reading requires an awareness of all the ways in which a story communicates. It also requires attention to detail. What the author provides is a network of points which serve as clues to his meaning. He invites the"reader to develop the meaning by inference, actually to create much of the story himself and so make it part of his own experience.

4.Why is it hard for many of us to do things for ourselves before we do for others?Maybe we believe the"good"woman sacrifices herself for her family and,increasingly,for her work."In terms of our relationships,women often feel they're responsible for everything-which is not a complete misunderstanding,"says nationally syndicated (为多家报刊供稿的)columnist and life coach Harriette Cole."We are the ones who usually lead the way.But somehow we get from there to the idea that the world won't work if we don't help it along.
Taking on responsibilities that might be well or even better handled by others is one of the ways we begin to lose our balance and slide down the slippery slope from generosity to martyrdom(殉道).Because women are likely to be the primary caretakers for husbands and children as well as for aging parents,we have ample opportunity to fall into the pattern of serving the people we love before we serve ourselves.But there are good reasons to be careful about that,"If you always put someone else first,there's a tendency for others to depreciate you,to lose respect,because respect for another comes from an understanding that that person has her own wishes,dreams,and desires,"says Ethel S.Person,MD,author of Feeling Strong:The Achievement of Authentic Power.Besides,why must there be only one person in first place at a time?"It's possible to have equal concerns for yourself and for loved ones,"says Person."There aren't always conflicting priorities."
In fact,being skilled at taking care of yourself may improve your ability to care for others; if you're not fulfilled,you're only able to see other people through your own needs.And studies suggest that not taking care of ourselves is unhealthy for those who depend on us.At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,researchers found that greater level of caregiver stress were associated with increased respiratory(呼吸的) problems among the babies in their charge.
32.What does Harriette Cole agree with?A
A.If women don't help along,the world will still work.
B.Women should put themselves after others to provide proper care.
C.It is absolutely wrong for women to think they are responsible for everything.
D.If a woman doesn't sacrifice for her family or work,she is not a good woman.
33.What can women do to avoid losing their balance?D
A.Fall into the habit of putting others first
B.Shoulder as many responsibilities as possible
C.Develop some hobbies that can take them off their work
D.Try to have equal concerns for themselves and their loved ones
34.Where does respect for another come from according to Ethel S.Person?B
A.Knowing that that person is the primary caretaker for the family.
B.Being aware that that person has her own wishes,dreams and desires.
C.Understanding that that person has made great sacrifices for others.
D.Realizing that that person often copes with a dilemma of conflicting priorities.
35.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?C
A.Women should always put their own needs first.
B.Your stress may contribute to your infants'respiratory problems.
C.Taking good care of yourself allows you to take better care of others.
D.The women unable to look after themselves raise unhealthy children.
