10.About 30years ago,I left Cuba for the United States with my son.After getting settled finally in Brunswick,New Jersey,I enrolled (注册) my son in kindergarten.Several weeks later,my son's teacher asked me to meet him at his office.
In the teacher's office,an exchange of greetings was followed by his questions:"Is your son mentally retarded (弱智的)?Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?"
Was he talking about my wonderful Scola?No,no,it can't be.What a helpless,lonely moment!I told him that Scola was a quiet,sweet little boy,instead.I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.
My son could not follow the teacher's directions,he told me,and thus,Scola was disrupting the class.Didn't he know my son did not speak English yet?
He was angry:"Why hasn't your son been taught to speak English?Don't you speak English at home?"
No,I didn't speak English at home,I answered.I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months,and I didn't want him to forget his native language.Well,wrong answer!What kind of person would not speak English to her son at home and at all times?"Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country,never wanting to be a part of this society?"
Needless to say,I tried to tell him I was not one of"those people".Then he told me the meeting was over,and I left.
As I had expected,my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over.He went to college and then got a job,earning close to six figures.He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted,contented life.And he has benefited from being bilingual (双语的).
Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others;it teaches people about other cultures and other places-something very basic and obviously lacking in the"educator"I met in New Jersey.

1.It looks exactly like other handicraft (手工艺品) shops in a traditional Chinese hutong,or alley, except that each item has a story. The city's first-of-its-kind charity shop, owned by Nathan Zhang, sells Chinese handicrafts along with used books, clothes and other items. The concept is that money from what is sold is donated to help rural (农村的) women in China.
"Many NGOs (non-governmental organizations) produce their own things but don't have a place to sell it,"said Zhang, who returned to Beijing in 2008 after working in Canada for nearly a decade in the telecommunications world."A rural women's group tried to open a little shop but only sold two things. When they put their products in my shop, everything sold out."
Located in Wudaoying Hutong in Dongcheng district,Brand Nu's walls are lined with handicrafts from a number of different NGO supported projects aimed at benefiting women across the country. The other half of the space is filled with almost brand-new clothes that have been donated from Beijing citizens. The jackets, dresses, tops and pants sell for around 30 yuan ($4.40)each.
Most of the money Brand Nu gets goes directly to the Beijing Cultural Development Center for Rural Women. The NGO offers a number of programs for poor women, including literacy classes (识字班),support networks and mental health education.
Zhang is also working with a local Scottish designer to create a clothing line made from the fabric (织物) of second-hand garments. And he is collecting books and raising money to help the NGO build a library near Beijing. He plans on expanding his product line soon as well, engaging more disadvantaged women to make sweaters, soaps and other items that he can sell in Beijing to help raise their socioeconomic status in the countryside.
Yet with ambitions come worries.Right now Zhang is operating on a shoestring budget and looking for work on the side to support both his business and his family."I wanted to do something meaningful,"said Zhang."If you can help one woman, you can help an entire family."

18.Surprises often come in boxes.Birthday presents wrapped in colorful paper,brown paper packages are mailed from a friend.No matter what kind of box it is,people like to open it up and see what's inside.In America,and in many other countries,one special kind of box contains the future.It's called a ballot(投票,选票)box.What people put into the box on Election Day can change the course of history.
Elections,are the lifeblood of a democracy.The word democracy literally means"the people rule,"an important concept in America's history.In the mid-17OOs,England began passing laws that made the American colonies angry.The colonists had to pay more and more taxes and enjoyed less and less freedom.They felt the government of England didn't represent their interests.On July 4,1776,the colonies declared their independence from England.They wanted to establish a democracy where people could have a voice in government.
An effective democracy holds regular elections.In America,every four years,voters go to the polls to elect the nation's president and vice-president.Voters also regularly cast their ballots for state and city government leaders and local school board members.Sometimes they also have to vote on a proposed law.
In the American electoral system,people don't really vote for presidential candidates.Instead,voters cast their ballots for"electors"who support each candidate.Each state has as many electors as the total number of its representatives in Congress.The candidate who has the most votes in a state wins all of the state's electors.To win the presidential election,a candidate must gain at least 270of the 538total electoral votes.
Over the years,the U.S.has made a number of election reforms.Some early reforms outlawed (宣布…不合法)cheating,giving bribes and threatening voters.In 1870,black people gained the right to vote,and in 1920,that right was extended to women.In recent decades,laws against unfair rules for voting have been passed.In 1971,the voting age was lowered to 18.Other reforms made voting easier for the blind,the disabled and people who couldn't read.In some areas,ballots had to be printed in languages besides English.
32.What is the main idea of the passage?A
A.American elections.
B.American democracy.
C.American election reforms.
D.American electoral system.
33.Who don't people in America vote for regularly?C
A.The president.
B.City government leaders.
C.Middle school headmasters.
D.Local school board members.
34.Why did American colonies want to be independent?D
A.Because the government of England represented their interests.
B.Because the government of England didn't want to govern them.
C.Because they shared no freedom and dependence but responsibility.
D.Because they wanted to have a voice in government.
35.What can we learn about American elections?B
A.All Americans can cast their ballots on Election Day.
B.Elections are regularly held in the United States.
C.A presidential candidate must gain less than half the votes.
D.In 1870,American women gained the right to vote.

2.What makes a person a scientist?Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others?The answer is"no".It isn't the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools which makes him a scientist.You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter.You will probably agree,too,that knowing how to investigate,how to discover information,is important to everyone.The scientist,however,goes one step further;he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer he gets to many questions is into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist's knowledge must be exact.There's no room for half right or right just half the time.He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit.What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times.If the conditions are different,any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions.
This is one reason why investigations are important in science.Albert Einstein,who developed the Theory of Relativity,arrived at this theory through mathematics.The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation.Einstein's ideas were proved to be correct.A scientist uses many tools for measurements.Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.
13.What makes a scientist according to the passage?C
A.The tools he uses.
B.His ways of learning.
C.The way he uses his tools.
D.The various tools he uses.
14."…knowing how to investigate,how to discover information,is important to everyone."The writer says this to showC.
A.the importance of information
B.the difference between scientists and ordinary people
C.the importance of thinking
D.the difference between carpenters and ordinary people
15.What is the main idea of the passage?D
A.Scientists are different from ordinary people.
B.The Theory of Relativity.
C.Exactness is the core of science.
D.Exactness and way of using tools are the keys to making of a scientist.

13.Hello.I'm Jan from Mrs.Lake's class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this.Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town.We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it.The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the governwent does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us,cleaning them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week.We will meet in Mrs.Lake'room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M.At the meeting,we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we'Il try to pick an area to adopt and clean ap.
