My high school life has made me learn many things. Between them teamwork is the most significantly for me. In fact, I didn’t realize its importance after I was elected monitor. In the begin, I did almost all the duties myself, however, others students cared little about class activities. Therefore, I worn out and depressed. Then I turned to my head teacher but he advised me to cooperate with others. Gradually, I realized the strengths of my classmates and managed to have everyone to play a part in class. It is working in teams instead of on my own which has freed me of trouble and make my work more efficient.

I was at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bambolim, Goa, in the 1980s. On Inspection Day one year, an officer and his team from the Board of Education were coming to see how our school was run. As usual, our teachers asked us to be prepared.
At the end of the day, Mrs Sushila Tyaji, our Hindi teacher, walked in and told us that the inspector had come and quietly observed the class from the back door. He had also left an adverse remark! That was sad for us. Would we now be punished for having failed our teachers? There were no answers from Mrs Tyaji. Instead, she wrote the Hindi word “dukh” on the blackboard. And then she did something I have never seen a teacher do in my entire school life. She apologized.
“I am sorry for having taught you something wrong,” she said. “I missed out the dots between the letters ‘du’ and ‘kh’. The inspector told me this in the staffroom. I hope you will not make this mistake in future.”
That admission had a significant effect on me. If our teacher can say sorry to us when she is wrong, why can’t I? The incident helped me get rid of two common vices—ego and dishonesty.
Twenty-three years passed. I had to let my teacher know what that lesson meant to me. I recently located Mrs Sushila Tyaji using the Internet and went to meet her with my husband.
She smiled when she heard my story of how her small decades-old apology had transformed me for good. “It’s tough being a teacher. But every once in a while, when an old student comes along and tells us that we did something right, it makes up for everything else,” she said.

A. offensive B. unfavorable
C. encouraging D. unforgettable
2.At the end of Inspection Day, Mrs Tyaji ________.
A. praised the students for their hard work
B. expressed her disappointment in the students
C. told the students that she had made a mistake
D. punished the students for their bad behavior
3.What did the author learn from Mrs Tyaji ?
A. Honesty is the best policy
B. Comfort is better than rude
C. One can never be too careful
D. It is better to be safe than sorry
4.The author’s word during the visit made Mrs Tyaji feel ________.
A. guilty B. contented
C. surprised D. embarrassed

There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr.Clinton Wright of the University.Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.

My neighbor Mrs. Gargan first told me about it. “Have you seen the tree?” She asked as I was sitting in the backyard enjoying the autumn twilight (暮色). “The one down at the corner,” she explained. “It’s a beautiful tree—all kinds of colors. All the passers-by stop to have a look. You ought to see it.” I told her I would, but I soon forgot about the tree. Three days later, I was jogging down the street when a splash of bright orange caught my eyes. For an instant, I thought someone’s house had caught fire. Then I remembered the tree.
I approached the tree to look at it closely. There was nothing remarkable about the shape of the tree. It was a medium-sized maple. But Mrs. Gargan had been right about its colors. Like the mess of an artist’s palette(调色板), the tree blazed a bright crimson(深红色)on its lower branches and burned with vivid yellows and oranges in its center, and deep red at its top. Through these colors were light green leaves as yet untouched by autumn.
Walking closer I noticed several bare branches near the top, their small black branches scratching the air like claws. The fallen leaves lay like a red carpet around the trunk.
As I was amazed at this beauty, I thought of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s comments about the stars. “If the constellations(星座)appeared only once in a thousand years, imagine what an exciting event it would be. But because they’re up there every night, we barely give them a look,” he made a remark in Nature.
I felt the same way about the tree. Because its beauty will last only a week, it should be especially precious to us. And I had almost missed it.
Once in the 19th century when a man noticed a brilliant display of northern lights(北极光)in the sky over Massachusetts, he rang a church bell to alert the whole town’s people. That’s what I felt like doing about the tree. I wanted to awake the countryside to its wonder.
I didn’t have a church bell, but as I walked home, I did ask each neighbor I passed the same simple but important question Mrs. Gargan had asked me: “Have you seen the tree?”.
1.What did the author’s neighbor remind him?
A. To appreciate the beauty of the sunset.
B. To find what happened at the street corner.
C. To draw a picture of a tree.
D. To enjoy the beautiful tree in all colors.
2. From the passage we know _________.
A. the author felt it precious to see the beauty of the tree
B. the author thought of the stars as beautiful as the tree
C. the remarkable scene of the tree only appeared in a thousand years
D. People never had a close look at the tree
3. How did the author call on people to enjoy the wonder?
A. He rang the church bell.
B. He passed on the same question.
C. He awakened all neighbors up.
D. He required people to the corner.
4.The best title of the passage can be ________.
A. Have You Seen the Tree?
B. The Most Beautiful Tree
C. One of the Wonders in Nature
D. The Precious Moment in Life

Old people are easy to feel lonely because their children are busy with their work and have little time to spend with them. Most of them have to be companied by pet dogs. However, it is sometimes impossible for some old people to keep pet dogs because they are too old or ill to take care of pet dogs.
Experts are studying the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression(忧郁症),physical activity, and life satisfaction. Researchers are placing robotic dogs in the homes of lonely old people to see whether they can improve the quality of life for old people. Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, said, “Old people should be more active, challenged, excited. The problem is how we promote that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Researchers will collect basic data for six weeks. Then, the researchers will review the data to decide if there are any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a 70-year-old lady. “When I'm watching TV, he'll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over real dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog needn’t any exercise and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would prefer the robotic dog because it was metal and not furry (毛茸茸的) ,”Beck says. “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”
Hopefully, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels, or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help exciting older people’s minds.
