Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests they both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(轨道).

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. And parent—child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority(权威) on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily achieved by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

1.The underlined word “gulf” in Para.3 most probably means _________.

A. distance B. interest

2.The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _________.

B. less respect for parents from children.

C. new equality between parents and children.

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents.

3.By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side.” the author means that today’s parents _________.

A. can set a limit to the change.

B. follow the trend of the change.

C. fail to take the change seriously.

D. have little difficulty adjusting(适应)to the change.

4.The purpose of the passage is to _________.

A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with.

B. discuss the development of the parent—child relationship.

C. suggest the ways to handle the parent—child relationship.

D. compare today’s parent—child relationship with that in the past.

Wisdom teeth are normally the last teeth to appear. This usually happens when people are in their late teen years or early twenties,in other words, when they are older and wiser.

Wisdom teeth can grow into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth;they might crowd other teeth.Sometimes they even push sideways through the gums (齿龈).

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that fails to completely rise through the gums.Wisdom teeth that only partly break through can leave space for bacteria to enter around the teeth.Infection (感染) is a risk in these cases.

Wisdom teeth that are not well lined and become impacted are often removed. The American Dental Association says removal is generally advised when wisdom teeth only partly break through the gums.Removal is also advised if there is a chance that wisdom teeth ate poorly lined. The best time to remove is before the teeth cause any problems or pain.Young adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal.

But why do we have wisdom teeth if we often need to get them removed? One theory has to do with our diets.Scientists say the diet of ancient humans probably required more chewing teeth.Life was probably a little rougher on the teeth back then, too. So it was good to have extras.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Just older and wiser people can have wisdom teeth.

B.Wisdom teeth can cause problems if not in their right place.

C.Impacted wisdom teeth can’t grow out of the gum fully.

D.Wisdom teeth that only partly break can get bacterial infections.

2.Wisdom teeth should be removed ________.

A.when they break through the gums

B.when they are below the gums

C.if they are not well lined or get impacted

D.if they take up enough room in the mouth

3.We can learn from the passage that________.

A.impacted wisdom teeth have the risk of getting infected

B.ancient humans need chewing teeth because of their happy life

C.older adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal

D.more chewing teeth are needed for the diet of modern humans

4.The main purpose of the passage is to________.

A.advise B.persuade

C.comment D.introduce

Many of us still tend to think that emotions can affect reasonable thought, and sometimes land us in trouble. But in recent years psychologists have taken quite a different view. Keith Oatley,Professor of Psychology at Glasgow University,is involved in the research which shows the fundamental importance of emotions.

He believes we are very ambivalent about them:we think of our emotions as being unreasonable, but we also consider them as essential to being human. For example,Mr Spock,a character in the television series Star Trek,is super?intelligent and he has no emotions at all. However,he is never made captain of the spaceship.Maybe, this is because Mr Spock is not the kind of person you can share your feelings with—a person who shows his emotions.

As Professor Oatley points out,our emotions have very important functions, for example, fear. If we cross the road and a car approaches,we usually stop moving or step back.We stop what we are doing, check what we have done and pay very careful attention to the environment. The emotion of fear makes us take this small series of actions which,on average, help preserve our safety.

On the other hand,if things are going well and small problems come up,we find we can solve them with the resources we have to hand.As a consequence,we tend to feel happy and usually continue doing the job.

Anger is an emotion that tends to occur when someone is preventing us from doing something. Then this small “kit” of reactions enables us to prepare ourselves to be quite aggressive to that person,or to try harder, and so on.

Professor Oatley believes emotions generally occur at these important moments in actions. With fear and anger our emotions make us decide to start doing something else, while with happiness they “suggest” we continue what we are already doing.

1.What’s Keith Oatley’s opinion about emotions?

A.They affect reasonable thought.

B.They get us into trouble.

C.They are helpful to us.

D.They are reasonable.

2.What does the underlined part “we are very ambivalent about them” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.We have contradictory feelings towards emotions.

B.We have similar ideas of emotions.

C.We are quite clear about emotions.

D.We can do nothing about emotions.

3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Fear helps us to be careful about our surroundings.

B.Happiness inspires us to continue what we are doing.

C.Anger may urge us to make greater efforts.

D.Anger tends to do us more harm than good.

4.It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.we must control our emotions in daily life

B.emotions play a more important part than we realize

C.positive emotions such as love and joy are good for us

D.negative emotions make us continue what we are doing
