【题目】The world is filled with smart ,educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago ,my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic fixed it in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine sound. I was amazed. The sad truth is that great talent is not enough.

I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100,000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade told me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant (顾问)who gave me the phrase ,“They are one skill away from great wealth.”

There is an old saying that goes,“JOB means ‘Just Over Broke(破产)”. And unfortunately,I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because schools do not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “live within their means”. They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend that young people seek work for what they will learn ,more than what they will earn.

When I ask the classes I teach ,“How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's ? ” almost all the students raise their hands.I then ask ,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger ,how come McDonald's makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than t he skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.

1The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that .

A. he is just one of the talented people B. he is ready to help others

C. he has a sharp sense of hearing D. he knows little about car repairing

2The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by“ ”.

A. spend more than they can afford B. do in their own way

C. live in their own circle D. live within what they earn

3Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?

A. They don't work hard enough. B. They lack financial intelligence. C. They don't make full use of their talents. D. They have no specialized skills.

4The main purpose of the author is to tell us .

A. how young people can find a satisfactory job

B. what schools should teach about finance

C. why so many talented people are poor

D. how McDonald's makes much money

【题目】 Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not? This was the goal of Michael Eddie the Eagle Edwards, and that he reached that goal was an amazing achievement.

Born in the U.K. in 1963, Michael was an enthusiastic downhill skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-class competitions. He would have liked to represent his country in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn't qualify. Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn't cost nearly as much, and there was almost no competition for a place on the Britain team.

But number of hurdles (障碍)could have meant the end of Edwards' dream. He weighed more than most competitors, which put him at a disadvantage. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles (护目镜)- not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes. But he couldn't let any of this discourage him. He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn't the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.

In the end, Edwards took 55th place in the 1987 World Championships. He then went on to the Calgary Olympics in 1988, where he finished last in both of his events. Many athletes would have been embarrassed by this result, but he is proud of his achievement to this day. His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.

1What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To add some background information.

B. To uncover the secret of success.

C. To expect an answer from readers.

D. To introduce the topic.

2Why did Michael Edwards choose ski jumping?

A. It took less skill.

B. The equipment was cheaper.

C. There was little competition.

D. It was easy to win the championship.

3After the Calgary Olympics, Edwards _________.

A. felt he had reached his goal

B. was embarrassed by his results

C. switched to film making

D. was glad it was over

4What made Michael Edwards outstanding?

A. His determination to win.

B. His enthusiasm for the sport.

C. His attitude towards the Olympics.

D. His ability to overcome physical disabilities.

【题目】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

What Coffee Does to Your Health

Coffee can be considered one of nature’s greatest gifts. It gives mental and emotional clearness without harmful side effect, and it contains a wealth of nutrients. Yet, when most people drink coffee, they are not thinking that the drink is improving their health. In fact, some may even feel a little guilty, since some believe coffee isn’t good for them at all.

Well, there’s the truth of the matter. Coffee, like anything else, can bring about problems if too much is consumed. In the short-term, too much coffee will cause sleeping problems and high blood pressure. In the long-term, too much coffee will cause stomach problem as well as teeth staining.

As for the benefits, moderate consumption of coffee, which means 1 to 4 cups a day, provides your body with a wealth of antioxidants(抗氧化物质).These substances are responsible for eliminating free radicals(自由基). They are the chemical byproducts produced any time your body does something. A small number of them can help serve as something against negative elements, but if they aren’t kept in control, they can cause health problems. Antioxidants ensure that this doesn’t happen.

The psychological effects of caffeine cannot be ignored either. Not only does caffeine make you more alert, but it can actually affect your mood. If you were feeling depressed, a nice cup of coffee could change your perspective. The stack of work that seemed impossible before isn’t even a problem now.

In addition, caffeine helps stimulate creativity as it speeds up the body’s functioning. That’s why coffee is often associated with writers and other intellectual professions. Other drugs tend to make people dumber. Consider what happens when people get drunk off of alcohol. They won’t be functional at all. But with coffee, an individual gets a push in creative thinking while still helping their bodies.

In conclusion, don’t feel bad when you are making your morning cup of coffee. Unlike a shot of alcohol, coffee will make your feel wonderful while keeping you healthy. Just remember, you do have to consume it in moderation.

【题目】American Country Music

Over the past twenty years, American country music has become more and more popular. Song writers are no longer writing about the modern values of the USA—money, success or expensive things to buy. Instead they are writing once more about things that are common for everyone: feeling alone in the modern world, the value of having good friends and so on.

In the 1950s, American music was about other things, for example, love—getting or losing a boyfriend or girlfriend. Money was also thought to be important.

Then in the 1960s, song writers turned to other subjects. During these years many young students were angry with society, so songs were often full of anger. Political leaders were not well thought of and those songs often made fun of them.

Today country music has returned. It has become big business and brings in between 200 and 400 million dollars a year. Once, the home of American country music was Nashville, Tennessee. Now, however, the music has reached all parts of the States, from Los Angeles in the west to New York in the east. Singers do not just come from the States but from all over the world. There are many famous singers from Britain, Canada and Australia. A lot of them appear on television too.

The first country singers sang while playing the guitar. It was easy for them to carry a guitar on their travels. Now, however, a lot of electrical equipment is needed for large theatres.

Country music today remains much the same as before. One subject to which country music often returns is “the good old days”. In “the good old days” people thought well of each other. People loved life in the open air. They believed that the best things in life were free: sunshine, laughing, walks in the beauty of the country, friends and music.

1What do we know about American country music?

A. Country singers had a great interest in politics.

B. Country music is originally written for the black.

C. More musical instruments are used by country singers.

D. Televisions lead to the growing popularity of country music.

2Which of the following does modern American country music focus on?

A. Friendship. B. Love.

C. Power. D. Money.

3Country singers return to the subject of “the good old days” to ___________.

A. record their past achievements

B. remind people of American history

C. express their appreciation of a simple life

D. call on people to stay away from social problems
