Whenever he took the chair on the exam committee, the students would be in fear, because he was seldoiii pleased with the answers they gave. A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again. Now a student entered the exam room and got seated before the com?mittee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.

Mr Paul began to ask. The student was required to describe a certain ill?ness, his description of which turned to be OK.

Then Mr Paul asked about the cure (药物) for the illness* and the student, too, answered just as right. "Good”, said the professor, "and how mucii will you give the patient?"

  "A full spoon”,answered the student.

"Now you may go out and wait for what you can get," said Mr Paul. At the same time, the committee discussed carefully the answers the student had given. Suddenly the student noticed that there was something wrong with his last answer. "A full spoon is too much," he thought to himself. Anxiously he opened the door of the room and cried, "Mr Professor,I've made a mistake!A full spoon is too much for a patient. He can take only five drops."

When people discuss education, they insist that preparation for cxanuii^ tions is not the main purpose. They are right in theory, but in practice,v.. i!realize how important examinations are. What do you know about the examinn tious taken at English secondary schools? Here are a few facts about some of them.

Pupils who remain at school until they are sixteen normally take what is called the General Certificate (合格证) of Education at Ordinary Level. The ex?amination is a subject examination. This means you can take a number of sub?jects. Some pupils take as many as ten. The more subjects, the better chance a pupil has of getting a job on leaving school. For short, this examination is called G.C. E. "O" Level.   Pupils who remain at school until they are eighteen generally take the General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level, popularly known as G. V. E. "A" Level. This examination is usually taken in two?three or four special?ized subjects. And because it is for the specialist, you have to study each sub?ject intensively. A pupil who has passed two or three "A” levels can apply for admission to a university.

These two examinations are written ones. Many English children take one or the other or both. Not all of them pass.

I began learning the violin when I was nine, and the next year I began studying under Natalie Ghent, who was my teacher until I left high school.

Once,Mrs Ghent held a concert for her students. I played near the end of it. After I played a while,I forgot the music. No matter how I tried,I couldn't think of it. So I had to stop and looked at the pianist's music. When the whole concert was over,I cried hiding in my overcoat.

Mrs Ghent came to comfort me. Then she told us about a coming concert, and she hoped I would go there with her. I remember that the concert was on my birthday in March. It was great,as Mischa Elman was going to perform at Carnegie Hall. My teacher decided to buy the best tickets as my birthday pres?ent.

Carnegie Hall is quite beautiful with all the lights on. I had never been in such a concert hall before, and was impressed by the size as well. I don't re?member what Elman played. I only remember that his playing was beautiful. I have seen films of him in recent years, and have been struck by his perform?ance, but I don't remember the music he played that night. What I remember most is Mrs Ghent whispering to me from time to time that he had forgotten something or played a wrong note,or made some other kind of mistake.

The London Eye is a tourist attraction in London,UK. There you get on a capsule (a wheel that goes round) to enjoy a great view of the city of London.

I visited the London Eye in the summer of 2009 with a friend. My friend didn't know where we were heading to. I just told him we would go somewhere very nice. As we arrived at Waterloo station,he had worked out where we were heading to and smiled happily. There was a very long queue,so in order to save time,he stayed in the queue while I collected the tickets.

The capsule doesn't actually stop when people get on,so you have to get into it quickly. Then the door of the capsule closes. The view was spectacular. We took many photos of the view and of ourselves. There were about 10 of us in the capsule and it took about half an hour for it to go round.

If you are interested in going there,I'd like to give you some tips. To en?joy the view,go in the daytime. There are night rides, but you won't see a lot. Beautiful photos are taken of people in the capsule and you can buy them when you get off. The best shots are the ones taken of people standing in front of the door. The photo takes the full view of the capsule with the person. So for a good shot, stay by the door. Ladies―take a scarf. Sometimes the top of the wheel can be quite cool even though it's sunny.

8. The underlined word "spectacular" in Paragraph 3 shows that         .

   A. the view looked better in pictures

   B. the view from the London Eye was great

   C. the writer didn't have a good time there

   D. the view was not as good as the writer expected

9. What's the writer's purpose in writing the last paragraph?

   A. To attract foreign people to pay a visit to the London Eye.

   B. To explain why the London Eye is good for taking photos.

   C. To show how much he enjoyed his visit to the London Eye.

   D. To give some advice to those people who want to visit the London Eye.

10. How can we take good photos in the capsule?

   A. By standing by the door.
