At heart, parents always wish the best for their children, and they work hard for that. Nowadays, we see parents deciding the schools for their little ones before the baby is even born. Once kids starts going to school, some parents want to have a time-to-time update(最新的情况) of their kid's activities. They want to come to their classroom every day, keep an eye on whom they talk to, know the friends they keep, start telling them how to do their jobs, and keep talking to them about everything under the sun. Besides, they send their kids to extra hobby classes, as they want their children to do best in every field.

Be patient and respect their decisions, but put your plan forth, and make them understand what you want to do and why. Many times, you don't know the difficulties that you may have to face while pursuing your dreams. Ask your parents for suggestions, which will make them feel good and involved. 【题目】Many editors have a rule that they will not even read stories that are not formatted and presented as requested in their Submission(投稿)Guidelines.Even if this policy is not stated,it affects their decision-making.There are a few reasonable reasons.

A good editor likes to read all stories for the first time in the same format(格式)as the publication standard.A consistent format between manuscripts(手稿)removes distractions like unusual presentation and puts each manuscript on the same starting level, with the focus on content.

Leading publications get thousands of submissions a year.Editor time is extremely valuable. Most editors enjoy finding gems among the manuscripts, but they really dislike reformatting(don't you prefer eating an elegant meal to washing dishes?).When an editor sees he will have to spend an extra half hour of precious time in reformatting,he subconsciously marks that submission down compared to other submissions of equal quality.

Publications need to have consistency in formatting for all their published stories: letterform, type size, spacing, paragraph structure etc. This keeps the reader’s focus on the words and not their structure.Since editors don't have a choice to just accept a weirdly(古怪的)formatted story as it is,they are forced to either reformat or decline the submission.

Publications use different software and other tools in their operations.Editors know what makes their system go smoothly. Many invisible software formatting structures between types of documents create disasters.

Editors are not pedantic(迂腐的).Their job is to find great material and expose those works to appreciative readers.Differently formatted manuscripts steal time away from that responsibility, which is bad for everyone.Editors love nothing more than finishing a read and thinking “Wow.A great story-AND it's cut and paste!"

1What does the underlined word "gems" refer to in the third paragraph?

A. Precious Jewels. B. Creative formats.

C. Great stories. D. Amazing characters.

2What kind of manuscript is most likely to be refused?

A. One with no special structures.

B. One with a general letterform.

C. One with attractive plots.

D. One with a weird format.

3What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. How the editors usually work.

B. Why publications need consistent format.

C. Why the manuscript's format can influence the editor's decision.

D. The ways on how to format manuscripts.

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
It was an autumn morning shortly after my husband and I moved into our first house. Our children were upstairs unpacking, and I was looking out of the window at my father moving around mysteriously on the front lawn. “What are you doing out there?” I called to him.
He looked up, smiling. “I'm making you a surprise.” I thought it could be just about anything. When we were kids, he always created something surprising for us. Today, however, Dad would say no more, and caught up in the busyness of our new life, I eventually forgot about his surprise.
Until one gloomy day the next March when I glanced out of the window, I saw a dot of blue across the yard. I headed outside for a closer look. They were crocuses (番红花)throughout the front lawn — blue, yellow and my favorite pink, with little faces moving up and down in the cold wind. I remembered the things Dad secretly planted last autumn. He knew how the darkness and dullness of winter always got me down. What could have been more perfectly timely to my needs?
My father's crocuses bloomed (开花) each spring for the next five seasons, always bringing the same assurance: Hard times are almost over. Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon.
Then a spring came with only half the usual blooms and the next spring there were none. I missed the crocuses, so I would ask Dad to come over and plant new bulbs. But I never did. He died suddenly one October day. My family were in deep sorrow, leaning on our faith.
On a spring afternoon four years later, I was driving back when I felt depressed. It was Dad's birthday, and I found myself thinking about him. This was not unusual — my family often talked about him, remembering how he lived up to his faith. Suddenly I slowed as I turned into our driveway. I stopped and stared at the lawn. There on the muddy grass with small piles of melting snow, bravely waving in the wind, was one pink crocus.
How could a flower bloom from a bulb more than 18 years ago, one that hadn't bloomed in over a decade? But there was the crocus. Tears filled my eyes as I realized its significance.
Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon. The pink crocus bloomed for only a day, but it built my faith for a lifetime.
(1)According to the first three paragraphs, we learn that ________.
A.it kept bothering the author not knowing what the surprise was
B.the author was unpacking when her father was making the surprise
C.it was not the first time that the author's father had made a surprise
D.the author knew what the surprise was because she knew her father
(2)Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The author usually felt depressed in the season of winter.
B.The author's father planted the crocuses to lift her low spirits.
C.The author often thought about her father after he died.
D.The crocuses bloomed each spring before her father died.
(3)The author's father should be best described as ______.
A.a part-time worker who loved flowers
B.a kind-hearted man who lived with faith
C.a full-time gardener with skillful hands
D.an ordinary man with doubts in his life
(4)What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Crocuses — My Source of Faith
B.Crocuses— Father's Surprise
C.A Pink Crocus — My Memory
D.Crocuses in Blossom — My Favorite

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they want to get some advantages in social position or fortune(财), nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections(反对), no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be unpleasing and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
(1)The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means ________.
A.make others unhappy
B.have a good taste with social life
C.often blame others openly
D.enjoy the pleasure of life
(2)We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A.we should pity all such unhappy people
B.people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
C.such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
D.unhappy people cannot understand happy persons
(3)If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should ________.
A.show no respect and politeness to them
B.prevent any communication with them
C.persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D.quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
(4)In this passage, the writer mainly ________.
A.describes two types of people
B.laughs at the unhappy people
C.suggests the unhappy people get rid of the habits of unhappiness
D.tells people how to be happy in life

It has been a long time since I did anything good for the environment. Feeling responsible to protect the environment, I decided to take the action again. I told my idea to my friends and we planned to plant tree on the hill in the countryside. We came to the foot of the hill and selected a place where looked suitably and settled down. We spend a few hours digging holes and placing the young seedlings. Then we wrote our wishes on cards one to one and buried it deep down the roots of the trees. We also took a lot of pictures. We were such busy that we didn't realize that it was time to go back. I felt really glad that we made difference to the environment.

【题目】Happy, angry, amazed—these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we're sending a message on our smartphones. That's a quick way of telling someone how we're feeling.Yes,emojis have become a vital tool for communication.

The emoji was first invented in Japan in the late 1990s and the word "emoji" comes from the Japanese words for "picture" and "character".The number of different images has dramatically increased since then and now we have a picture for every mood or situation.

So now we are giving this new creation the visual "thumbs-up" but have you thought why we've become so addicted to using emojis? Professor Vyv Evans has written a book called The Emoji Code, saying "increasingly, what we're finding is that digital communication is taking over certain aspects of face-to-face interaction...one of the reasons why emojis are so popular is that they really do enable us to express our emotional selves more effectively."

Another advantage of emojis is that they are an international language—they don't use words but some pictures so they can be easily interpreted whatever your native language is. However, the emojis can sometimes be misinterpreted—if a friend sends you an emoji of a hammer, you may think he/she is angry when really he/she is saying he/she is clumsy!

Emojis are a good way for showing similar feelings. But as linguist(语言学家) Neil Cohn says, "To many, emojis are an exciting evolution of the way we communicate, but to others, they are a linguistic Armageddon(大决战)."It does show there is a lot more to our communication than words alone but does this mean the decline in traditional writing?

1How do emojis help people in communication?

A. They can interpret the foreign languages.

B. They will take the place of face-to-face interaction.

C. People can express their emotions effectively with emoijs.

D. People can express themselves clearly with emojis at any time.

2Which of the following words can replace the underlined "thumbs-up"in Paragraph 3?

A. doubt B. praise

C. ignorance D. attention

3What do you probably mean by sending your friend an emoji of B hammer?

A. You are awkward. B. You need a hammer.

C. He/She loses his/her temper. D. He/She should apologize to you.

4What is Neil Cohn's opinion on emojis?

A. They are not used by linguists.

B. They will take over the traditional writing.

C. They will become an international language.

D. They bring convenience and challenges to language.
