Now, I know it's not always easy to do well in school. I know you have a lot of _     in your lives right now that can make it hard to      on your schoolwork.
I get it. I know what it’s like. My father   my family when I was two years old ,and I was         by a single mom who had to work and who struggled        to pay the hills and wasn't always       to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I      having a father in my life. There were times when I was          and I felt like I didn't fit in.
So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been on school, and I did some things I'm not    of, and I got in more trouble than I should .And my life could have     taken a turn for the worse.
But I was      ,I got a lot of second chances, and I had the opportunity to go to college and law school and follow my      .
Some of you might not have those      . Maybe you don't have adults in your life who give you the        that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job and there's not enough money to    the daily expenses. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don't feel safe, or have friends who are          you to do things that you know aren't right.
But at the end of the day,         the circumstances of your life are,        of those is an excuse for ignoring your homework or having a bad      in school. That's no excuse for talking back to your        , or dropping out of school. There's no excuse for not trying.

I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people made a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated(主持) at two funerals for two elderly women. Both died a natural death. At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故) woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I had not insisted her going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride was more than she could take. It is my fault.”
When things don’t turn out as we would like them to, we tend to assume that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course, for example, keeping mother at home, would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense——there is a reason for everything that happens.
The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely abandon that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.

小题3:People have believed since early childhood that   .
A. everybody is at their command

I grew up with a fat dad—450 pounds at his heaviest.Every week he would try a new diet, and my family ended up eating whatever strange food he was trying at that moment.
After my thirdgrade year,my dad landed a lifechanging job in Manhattan. My mom,my little sister and I had to move away from our hometown,Chicago, and leave my grandmother and her beautiful food behind.
Leaving my grandmother was far more frightening than the move to New York City. There would be no more special weekends at my grandmother’s house, the only place I can remember feeling happy, safe and nourished (有营养的).It was what I desired. In this new city,I felt extremely alone and lost, and I missed my grandmother terribly.
My grandmother knew just how I felt—And she knew the cure.Every week, she would send me a card with a $20 bill,a recipe and a list of what to buy at the market. It kept us bonded, and her recipes filled my body and soul.
Over the years,I have grown to better understand my father’s struggles with weight and the toll (代价) it took on him and those who love him.I have come to realize he was driven not by vanity (自负) or selfishness as much as by a deep pain. And in spite of growing up in such an unhealthy eating environment (or perhaps because of it),as an adult I found a passion and a career as a nutrition consultant.
Today,my father weighs 220 pounds and is a vegan (素食者).How he got there is a story I hope to share in the coming weeks.More importantly, food is no longer a barrier that keeps us apart, but a bridge that keep us connected. There is nothing my dad enjoys more than talking with me about dietary theories and his weightloss victories. And now I am the one regularly sending recipe cards to my father’s house, just as my grandmother did for me.

The fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us understand our feeling about color. If they sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected by color without knowing it.
Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings(包装), that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste, and that cosmetics(化妆品) should never be packed in brown. Their discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology(心理学)。 Some of our preferences(偏爱) for colors are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure; red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a close study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.

小题3:. If people are exposed to(置身于) pure blue, _________.
A.their blood pressure rises
B.they want to taste blue foods
C.they will feel like buying things
D.they won’t easily feel nervous
小题4:. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?
A.Colors and salesB.Colors and feelings
C.The blind and colorsD.Preferences for colors

Actually, at one point my General Manager told me he liked me and suggested I should start looking for a new job as we were about to lose our only order. Every day we faced people leaving the company, customers complaining, and upper management preparing to close the place.
One night, I went home thinking about the problems. My wife told me to forget about work and see a movie. We went and saw Slumdog Millionaire. Jamal, an eighteen-year-old Indian young man, is from a poor family and becomes rich later. He tries his best to change his position. I realized what we needed to do was to correct the situation.
