The English and the Continentals

In England everything is the other way round. On Sundays on the Continent even the poorest person puts on his best suit, tries to look respectable, and at the same time the life of the country becomes gay and cheerful; in England even the richest lord(勋爵)or motor-manufacturer dresses in some peculiar(特别的, 罕见的)rags, does not shave, and the country becomes dull and sad.On the Continent there is one subject which should be avoided-the weather; in England, if you do not repeat the phrase “lovely day, isn’t it?” at least two hundred times a day, you are considered a bit dull.On the Continent people use a fork as though a fork were a shovel(铲子); in England they turn it upside down and push everything-including peas-on top of it.

On the Continent almost every nation whether little or great has openly declared at one time or another that it is superior to all other nations; the English fight heroic wars to combat these dangerous ideas without ever mentioning which is really the most superior race in the world.Continental people are sensitive and touchy(易生气的); the English take everything with a sense of humor-they are only offended if you tell them that they have no sense of humor. On the Continent the population consists of a small percentage of criminals, a small percentage of honest people and the rest are a vague transition(过渡, 转变)between the two; in England you find a small percentage of criminals and the rest are honest people. On the other hand, people on the Continent either tell you the truth or lie; in England they hardly ever lie, but they would not dream of telling you the truth.

Many continentals think life is a game; the English think cricket is a game.

Science fiction and fantasy are interrelated, and it can be hard to tell the difference between
the two.The two terminologies (术语)have been widely discussed, and it is very difficult to draw
a line between the two.In the words of great writer,Issac Asimov, science fiction is based on
technology and science and is possible.Science fiction can be about robots and space and has
its bases in science. On the contrary, fantasy is only imaginary, and involves things that do not
exist in real life.Fantasy can be about talking animals or something immortal.Science fiction
shows things that could possibly take place in the real world.Fantasy adds realism to things
that are unlikely to happen.
When compared to fantasy stories, the imaginary elements in science fiction can largely be
possible.Though the topic in science fiction can be contrary to reality, these stories are based
on some fact that is absent in fantasy.Unlike science fiction, fantasy uses supernatural forms
and magic in its topic.
Science fiction can be divided into different kinds, such as hard science fiction, soft science
fiction, social science fiction, time travel, military science fiction, super human fiction and space
fiction.Fantasy can be divided into horror fiction, mystery fiction, super hero fiction and
community.
However,as fantasy fiction becomes more focused on modern environments, rather than
ancient worlds, technology plays an increasingly important role in the stories, thus leading to the
birth of Science Fantasy, just in time to meet the audience mourning a slowdown of Science
Fiction.
Science fantasy has several characteristics.Magic is still extremely obvious. The level of
characterization differs greatly depending on the story.

Scars of Love

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(短吻鳄) was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched (抓住) his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war (拔河比赛) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, rushed from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred (留下伤疤) by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma (外伤), asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”

You and I can identify with (认同) that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friends, are because we have refused to let go.

C. the driver and the alligator          D. the son and the alligator

   A. The mother was unwilling to let the alligator go

   B. The mother was actually stronger than the alligator

   C. The son was proud of his scars on his arms

   D. The son was ashamed of his scars on his legs

58. According to the last paragraph, what is the writer’s real meaning?

   A. To forget the past is to betray.       B. We should forget the scars.

   C. Wounds are different from scars.     D. We should learn to let go sometimes.

China and India have roughly the same population, but when it comes to mobile phones, there is no comparison between the two. In India, seven years after the launch of mobile-phone services, there are only 10 million users. In China, half that number signs up as new subscribers every month.

Geography and culture explain some of the differences. The concentration of economic activity in China’s eastern coastal region gave its mobile operators big economics of scale, allowing lower prices. In China, telephones quickly came to be regarded as fashion items, something that has only recently happened to India.

But the main difference is regulation. India chose a licensing policy that divided the country into 22 regions, each with two licenses to operate mobile networks. Bidding in multiple regions was restricted. This aimed to promote competition, but led to a fragmented(零散的,破碎的) market with an array(一大批) of puzzled operators, none of which has economics of scale. Limited range also hurts service quality.

36. Which is the most appropriate title for the passage?

A. A Comparative Study of the Telecom Industry in China and India

B. Differences on Use of Mobile Phones in China and India

C. Geographical and Cultural Differences between China and India

D. Different Regulations on Mobile Phones in China and India

37. According to the writer, how many people sign up as new mobile phone subscribers in China every month?

A. 10 million         B. 7 million           C. 5 million          D. 22 million

38. Why are the prices of mobile telephone services lower in China’s eastern coastal region?

A. The average disposable income is lower in the region.

B. The GDP is higher in the region.

C. The costs of operators are lower due to a greater number of users of mobile phone services in the region.

D. The operators compete with each other in order to win over subscribers.

39. Why are mobile phones popular in China, according to the speaker?

A. They are considered as fashionable items.

B. They keep people closer to each other.

C. They are more convenient to users than fixed phones.

D. They are considered time-saving devices.

40. How does the speaker feel about the regulation of mobile services in India?

A. It has produced desired effects.

B. It has more advantages than disadvantages.

C. It helps promote competition.

D. It has created a negative impact in the market.
