          About 150 years ago a German musician sat quietly at a concert in Vienna. They were playing for the first
    time a new symphony (交响乐 ) he had composed (创作 ). At the end he turned to face the people at the

         The musician was Beethoven, one of the greatest composers in the world. Deaf people have a hard time.

         Even as a child Beethoven did not have a happy life. His father was a singer. But he was lazy and drank a

    not put his heart into his practice, his father would be hard on him.
          It is a wonder that the boy did not hate music.   4    When he was 17, he won high praise from Mozart,
    a great Austrian composer. A few years later Beethoven went to Vienna to study under Haydn, another great
    Austrian composer. Soon he was writing a great deal of music himself. But after one illness, he suddenly found
    himself deaf. At that time he was only 31. What a blow it was to him!
          But this did not stop Beethoven. He went on composing.   5   During his life, he composed about 300
    pieces. The surprising thing is that he wrote some of his best, his most beautiful pieces after he became deaf.
    Many of them are known and loved all over the world.

         How much paper do you use every year? Probably you can't answer that question quickly. In 1990 the
    world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person in a year. Now some countries use as much
    as 100 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. The amount of paper a country uses shows how far
    advanced the country is, some people say. It is difficult to say whether this is true: different people mean
    different things by the word "advanced". But countries like the United States, England and Sweden certainly
    use more paper than other countries.
         Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper
    was not very commonly used before the year 1400.
         The Chinese first made paper about 2,000 years ago. China still has pieces of paper which were made
    as long ago as that. But Chinese paper was not made from the wood of trees. It was made from the hair

         Paper was not made in southern Europe until about the year 1100. Scandinavia-which now makes a
    great deal of the world's paper-did not begin to make it until 1500. It was a German named Schaeffer who
    found out that trees could be made into the best paper. After that, the forest countries of Canada, Sweden,
    Norway, Finland, and the United States became the most important in paper making. Today in Finland,
    which makes the best paper in the world, the paper industry is the biggest in the land.

         HK Disneyland gives sneak preview Hong Kong Disneyland gave journalists a sneak peek two months
    before the park opens, showing off classic thrill rides like the Space Mountain roller coaster (过山车) and
    giving tours of restaurants serving all the major Chinese cuisines (烹调). 
                                                                
         The park features an East-meets-West theme, with a trademark (标志性的) Sleeping Beauty Castle and
    a Main Street that recreates small-town America. The food is distinctly Asian, catering to the masses of
    tourists Disney hopes to attract from across the border in mainland China.
         Robert Iger, who takes over as Disney's CEO in October, told reporters he dreamed of going to Disneyland
    when he was a child.
         "I'm convinced that the children of this region will have that same dream. They will dream of one day
    being able to come to Hong Kong Disneyland," Iger said.
         The park plans to attract 5.6 million visitors a year and opening day on September 12 is already sold out,
    said Don Robinson, managing director of the Hong Kong Disneyland Group.
         Robinson said 95 percent of the park is completed and that workers are rehearsing (彩排) shows and
    testing rides.
         The park has eight restaurants-with 29 000 seats-serving all the major Chinese cuisines, like Cantonese,
    Shanghainese and northern noodle dishes.
         Visitors will also be able to dig into Japanese sushi and Kashmiri chicken curry.
         The park will feature popular rides like Space Mountain as well as a jungle river cruise and a Buzz Lightyear
    ride, named after the spaceman warrior in the movie "Toy Story".
         A long palm tree-lined driveway leads to the park. At the front gate, there's a huge water fountain with
    a bronze statue of a whale spouting a stream of water on which Mickey Mouse is surfing.
         Throughout the park, signs are in Chinese and English.
         Robinson said the park hopes to eventually attract 10 million people a year, and when that goal is reached,
    Disney will expand the attractions.

         America's first zoo opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1859. Today about fifty million people visit
    zoos in this country each year."Let's go to the zoo!" is an expression people know very well. 
         What visitors find when they arrive has changed over the years. At one time, zoo animals lived in small,
    box-like cages. There was nothing except the animal, its food and its waste. The Bronx Zoo in New York

         The idea to create settings more like nature has spread to other zoos in America. For example, some-like
    the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri-allow birds to fly freely, although inside buildings.
         Out West, one of the leading American zoos is the one in San Diego, in Southern California. Three giant
    pandas live there, including Hua Mei-one of the few born at a zoo in the United States.
         The San Diego Zoo is also known for its koalas. These brown, furry animals from Australia are much
    smaller than the pandas but also highly popular.
         Yet, back home, some Australian states fear that koalas may die out. Several years ago, the San Diego
    Zoo started a program to protect endangered animals and their natural areas. Other parks and wildlife groups
    also took part in this project. More than 2,000 animals share about 730 hectares (公顷) of land at the San
    Diego Wild Animal Park. Experts have praised the park as a center for protection of rare animals.
         For example, the Wild Animal Park has helped save the California condor (加州兀鹫). With its wings
    spread, this huge bird measures three meters across. In 1987, researchers caught the last known California
    condors in the wild and took them to the Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.
         Today, more than 150 California condors are alive. Some have been freed into the wild.

          In October 1825, the Seneca Chief traveled from Buffalo to New York City. It was the first time a boat
    went all the way from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.
         In the early 19th century, transportation had become important to America. Companies needed to send their
    goods to distant markets. Farmers needed to send their crops to people in the cities. Pioneers wanted to travel
    west to find farm land. It was hard to build roads through the wilderness (荒无人烟的地区), so waterways

          Canals (运河) were one way to solve the problem. The Erie Canal connected the Hudson River( near New

         Cold weather has a great effect, on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are
    so many expressions that use the word "cold". For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with
    the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded.
    Cold-blooded people act in a merciless way. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident. For
    example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone,

         Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your
    feet are really cold. But there is an expression-to get cold feet-that has nothing to do with cold or your feet.
    The expression means being afraid to do something you had decided to do. For example, you agree to be
    president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the
    organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to gel cold feet about being president when you
    understand the situation.
         Cold can also affect your shoulder. You "give someone the cold shoulder" when you refuse to speak to
    them. You treat them in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning
    your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend
    who has not kept a promise: he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
         "A cold fish" is not a fish. It if a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and show no
    love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.
         "Out in the cold" is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got.
    A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a
    pleasant place to be.
