Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you are going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding(增加;扩大 【1】 .

Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts(冲突)can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm house. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted , or hungry. A good time to talk is when you are all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation----for now. 2 Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. 3 .

Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each other’s feelings can disagree without getting things ugly.

4 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers----they’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping----just like their teenagers!

p>What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky(难以维持的;不稳定的)? 5 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lead an ear.

Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.

B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.

C. And then you will be able to accept what your parents say.

D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.

【题目】下面文章中有5个段落需要添加小标题(第1—5题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E、F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有多余选项。

A.The engine in your body.

B.The location, size and heartbeat of a heart.

C.What happens when the heart beats?

D.How does your heart work?

E. How do we know about the heart?

F.What can a doctor tell by feeling your pulse?

【1】_______ Your heart is sometimes called the engine or the motor in your body and sometimes called the pump.It works away, both day and night.First it pumps out some blood, rests for a few seconds, and then it pumps some more.In a normal day, the heart pumps about 2,500 gallons of blood from the auricles and ventricles.

【2】________ When your heart beats, it is pumping blood to all parts of your body.If you could examine your heart closely, you would see that it is really two pumps placed side by side, and working at the same time. Each pump has two parts, the upper part called the auricle(心房), and the lower part called the ventricle(心室).The auricles receive the blood as it comes into them after it has been pumped through the body. The ventricles pump the blood out.The right one pumps the blood to the lungs and the left one pumps the blood to all other parts of the body.At the top and bottom openings of each ventricle are valves(阀门) which make the blood go in only one direction.

【3】______ Your heart is located in your chest, a little to your left. This heart of yours, which is about the size of your two fists held together, beats about 90 times a minute.A grown person’s heart beats about 60 to 80times a minute. The heartbeat is not just the same in all persons, and it is not the same in any one person at all times.

【4】_______ By using a stethoscope to listen to the heart, the doctor can tell whether your heart is beating evenly and whether the valves are closing tightly. The stethoscope makes these sounds so clear that the doctor can hear them easily. The stethoscope has an earpiece that he places on your chest and tubes that he places in his ears. The earpiece carries the sound of your heart’s beating along the tubes to the doctor’s ears, and it makes the sound seem much louder than it really is.The doctor could listen to your heartbeat by pulling his ears against your chest.

【5】_______ An easy experiment can help you understand what happens when the heart beats. You can do this experiment with a hollow rubber ball.Make a small hole in it, and fill the ball with water through the hole. When you squeeze the ball, you will notice how the water comes out in a spurt each time you squeeze. After each spurt the ball comes back to its round shape again.Something like this happens when your heart beats. The muscles in your heart grow smaller, or contract, and squeeze the blood out of the heart. Each time this happens, we say your heart is beating.Perhaps you have noticed that the doctor places his finger on the pulse in your wrist when you are ill.By doing this he can tell how fast your heart is beating.

【题目】完形填空

Teenage years can be confusing for both teenagers and parents. At about 15, many teens start thinking about how they feel about themselves and out how this matches or mismatches what others think of them. Most teens work through this by the age of 16 or 17.

Often teenagers are treated like bigger children, but they will never become and responsible if they are not allowed to make some decisions for themselves. If parents forbid their children from doing something, chances are that they will do it without permission anyway. The role of a parent must, therefore, change from that of protector and keeper to that of friend and

Yet even the most caring parents misunderstand their children sometimes, and some think of teenagers as insecure, stubborn and .As a result, teenagers always keep their from their parents. Teens often that their parents repeat the same things over and over again and never listen to them.Parents must understand that teens need to be allowed to their side of any problem and express their point of view.

Thus, more private and level-headed communication is needed for the parents. Every parent should try to schedule time to be with their child, like taking a short trip together. This time allows parents to talk and listen without from work or other family members .It might also be good to encourage teens to important issues at dinner. Discussion time shows teens that parents are interestd in them and their lives.

A person’s teenage years are a key time for them to identify their own ,like distinguishing good from evil. Handling and improving communication with teenagers is not easy, but success will be for parents and teens alike.

What is a dream?

For centuries, people have wondered about the strange places that they seem to visit in their sleep. 【1】However,they have been valued as necessary to a person’s health and happiness.

Historically people thought dreams contained messages from God.It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams scientifically, believing that they tell about a person’s character. 【2】He believed that dreams allow a person to express fantasies or fears, which would be socially unacceptable in real life.

The second theory to become popular was Carl Jung’s compensation theory.Jung,a former student of Freud, said that the purpose of a dream is not to hide something, but to communicate it to the dreamer. 【3】Thus,people who think too highly of themselves may dream about falling;those who think too little of themselves dream of being heroes.

Using more recent research,William Domhoff from the University of California found that dreaming is a mental skill that needs time to develop in humans. 【4】Until they reach age five, they cannot express very well what their dreams are about.Once people become adults, there is little or no change in their dreams. The dreams of men and women are different. For instance, the characters that appear in the dreams of men are often other men,and often involve physical aggression.

The meaning of dreams continues to be difficult to understand. 【5】If you dream that a loved one is going to die,do not panic. The dream may have meaning, but it does not mean that your loved one is going to die.

One day I was in the back yard teaching my little nephew how to play football. He said that play football was something easier. His words instantly bring back memories of my childhood. Like a little boy, I told my uncle I wanted to become football star like him. However, he taught me how to kick the ball.
