           A CAR design team is bringing back memories of a famous scene from a James Bond movie by producing a car that can travel under water．

           In the 007 film, The Spy Who Loved- Me （1977）, Bond drives below the waves in a vehicle that moments earlier seemed to be an ordinary car．

           The scene was shot using special movie magic, but more than 30 years later the Swiss company Rinspeed has come up with a concept （概念） car - the sOuba．It is an open-topped sports car that car drive over land, above the waves and even under water to a depth of 10 meters．It is to be displayed at next month's Geneva Motor Show．

           Rinspeed boss Frank Rinderknecht, 52, is a James Bond fan．"For three decades I have tried to imagine how it might be possible to build a car that can fly under water," he said．"Now we have made this dream come true．”

           To make sQuba, Rinspeed took a sports car and replaced the ordinary engine with several electric motors．Three motors arc located in the back of the car．One provides power on land while the other two drive the screws （螺旋桨） underwater．

           For safety reasons sQuba was built as an open car so that people can get out quickly in an emergency．With an enclosed cabin （封闭车厢） opening the door might be impossible because of water pressure．

           sQuba is easy to drive．When you go into the water it floats, until you open the door to let the water in．Soon the sQuba starts on its way to the underwater world．To breathe, you'll have to wear a scuba mask（潜水面罩） connected to the car's compressed-air （压缩空气） tank．The vehicle can stay under water until you run out of air, which is about two hours．

           Sadly, those people excited by the sQuba may never be able to drive one as there are no plans to put it into production．

           "It's a tradition that we produce a concept car for the Geneva Motor Show．"said Rinderknecht．"We don't plan to build it," he admitted．

    It's not the flashiest car in the world. Not even close. But the 1971 Volkswagen named Helios can do something most cars can't: nm on solar energy – energy from the sun's light and heat!

        Joshua Bechtold, 14, and the other students at the Riverside School in Lyndonville, Vermont, worked many months to get Helios ready for the 1999  American Tour de Sol （"Sol" is the Latin word for "sun"）. They named their car after Helios, the sun god in Greek mythology（神话）.

        The 4-year-old Tour de Sol encourages the use of "green", or environmentally friendly, cars to help reduce pollution and save energy. It’s not a race. Cars are  judged on fuel efficiency（耗油量） rather than speed. In the week-long event, 44 cars took the 350-mile tour from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Lake George, New York. Of the 23 student cars, Helios was the only one built by middle school students.

        A teacher drove Helios, but the children talked with people wherever they stopped along the mad. "That was my favorite part," says Anna Browne, 15. "We explained how the car runs.”

        Due in part to old, inefficient batteries（电池）, Helios finished fourth - out of four - in its kind, the sun-powered class. "We were there for the fun of it," Anna says. "We're proud of Helios," says Ariel Gleicher, 14. "It's a car that's good for the environment."

    Motorists who used to listen to the radio or their favorite tunes on CDs may have a new way to entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface.
    A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of“melody roads,”which use cars as tuning forks to play music as they travel.
    The concept works by using grooves(凹槽).They are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. The melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.
    Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of high or low notes, and designers are able to create a distinct tune.
    Paten documents for the design describe it as notches “formed in a road surface so as to play a melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melody-like tones”.
    There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan—one of which plays the tune of a Japanese pop song. Reports say the system was invented by Shizuo Shinoda. He scraped some markings into a road with a bulldozer before driving over them and found that they helped to produce all kinds of tones.
    The optimal speed for melody road is 44kph,but people say it is not always easy to get the intended sound.
    “You need to keep the car windows closed to hear well,”wrote one Japanese blogger.“Driving too fast will sound like playing fast forward, while driving around 12mph［20km/h］has a slow-motion effect, making you almost car-sick.”
