A team of researchers in the UK has shown that chil?dren who are taken to the library more often and own more books at two years old achieve higher scores in school tests when they begin pri?mary school. The research also showed that although social background has a noticeable effect on a child's readiness for school, attending preschool and hav?ing their parents teach them a wide range of activities have a positive effect―while extended exposure to television lowers their scores.
"One message coming through loud and clear is that how a child learns in his very early years is critical (至关重要的) for a smooth transition into the educational sys?tem," said Professor James Law. "This is a very positive message * as it gets us away from the belief that a child's educational future is predetermined by standard measures of socioeconomic disadvantage, such as income, housing,or the mother's education."
Data from the study shows that children from a posi?tive communication environment have a better expressive vocabulary by their second birthday. These children go on to achieve higher scores in language, reading and maths tests when they enter school. In the early years, the com?munication environment is a better predictor of children's success with language than their general social back?ground.
Most children develop speech and language effortless?ly,but some are slow to acquire these skills and go on to struggle with literacy (读写育g力) and academic skills throughout their schooling. This project set out to uncov?er what factors contribute to these problems.
Professor Sue Roulstone said, "These findings are an encouragement to all parents to provide a positive commu?nication environment for their children from the very start of their lives. The project did identify particular aspects of the communication environment such as having children's books around and not having the television on too much. But the main message is that,as parents,we can have an impact on how our children learn to talk by providing a range of communication experiences. And the better our children are at talking by the age of two years old,the better they will do when they start school."

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usu?ally a child? killed unfortunately. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new ba?by and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible?however?that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatu?ral expectations.
Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interests. But because personality is only partly the re?sult of genetic inheritance, conflicts would be sure to arise if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends on fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of their parents simply because of bad luck?
Every child should be wanted for itself,as a person. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person,a parent is purposely specifying the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the US,much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I sug?gest there should be a greater need to consider the interests of the child and to reject these suggested uses of cloning.
