Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone oxytocin Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.

"Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men lend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status," said Professor Ryan.

Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and

our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions (互动) such as falling in love or giving birth.

But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy.

Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship. Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(参与者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰剂).

After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material.

Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions.

The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.

Professor Ryan thus concluded: "Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors (因素) that are mainly hormonal."

1.What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text?

A. Placebo B. Oxytocin C. The gesture D. The social status

2.What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment?

A. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way.

B. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.

C. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success.

D. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.

3.Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment?

A. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions.

B. To know the differences between friendship and competition.

C. To know people's different abilities to answer questions.

D. To test people's understanding of body language.

4.The author develops the text by______.

A. explaining people's behaviors

B. describing his own experiences

C. distinguishing sexual differences

D. discussing research experiments

1.B

2.A

3.A

4.D

Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it’s all down to the hormone oxytocin(荷尔蒙催生素)可知,男女之间行为表现的不同是由于荷尔蒙催生素水平的不一样导致的。故B正确。

Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and和our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions (互动) such as falling in love or giving birth.第四段But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy在实验里Professor Ryan发现在消极的社会交往中,我们身体也释放出荷尔蒙,可知之前的实验告诉我们hormone oxytocin (荷尔蒙催生素)使用了另外一种形式来影响我们的行为。故A正确。

Professor Ryan thus concluded: "Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors (因素) that are mainly hormonal."

If you were a pilot flying a plane, and suddenly the engine failed, would you eject(跳出), or stay in? For a pilot, the choice is very difficult. If he ejects, he is safe, but the plane crashes. If he stays in the plane, he risks his life.

Recently, Chinese Air Force pilot Li Feng, 38, faced this choice during a training exercise. It was March 7 and he was flying a Jian-10 (Fighter-10) at 4,500 meters. A warning appeared on the plane’s computer screen. He realized the plane might fail at any moment.

Li Feng did a quick check of the engine and asked the base if he could return. When the fighter was 7 km away from the airport, however, the engine stopped working. The plane began to fall at a speed of 25 meters a second at an altitude of 1,160 meters.

Under Air Force rules, fighter pilots may eject if their aircraft loses engine power below 2,000 meters and can't be restarted. Before Li lost contact with the control tower, the commander in the air base asked him to eject. But Li Feng insisted on having another try.

“I knew where the deadline (to give up the aircraft) was and was prepared for the ejection, but I decided not to give up unless the fighter was totally out of control,” Li recalled during a recent television interview.

After 104 seconds, Li was able to bring the fighter to a safe landing. The plane only suffered slight damage.

“You are a hero! Congratulations!” Li's teacher, Xu Yongling wrote in a text message to him after the landing. He said Li was a cool-headed pilot and very professional.

Li's brave and calm act not only saved the 200 million yuan aircraft but also gave him invaluable first-hand experience of dealing with an engine emergency.

For his outstanding performance, the Air Force recently awarded him a gold medal.

Sharks have been swimming in the ocean for millions of years. They were on Earth even before dinosaurs! At the top of the world’s ocean’s food chain, sharks help keep the population of other ocean animals in balance. A large drop in the number of sharks can cause serious problems for all ocean animals. Saving sharks makes sense!

Many people are afraid of sharks. But most sharks are harmless. Only a small percentage of sharks are known to attack humans. It adapt(适应) well to new habitats and eat whatever is available. However, today, sharks are in trouble. Nearly one-third of the 400 shark species are in danger of extinction, largely due to over-fishing. Each year, tens of millions of sharks are caught and killed just for their fins(鳍). The fins are used to make shark fin soup.

Humane Society International (HSI) joined with the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program and Beijing Zoo to protect sharks. An exhibit at the zoo, “the Price Behind the Taste-----Protect Sharks. Don’t Eat Shark Fins”, was designed to tell people that shark finning is cruel and unnecessary. It’s hoped that the activity will help put an end to the practice.

Shark fin soup is also eaten in the United States. In fact, the numbers of some shark species in US waters have dropped 90 percent in the last 30 years. To slow the fall, laws against the sale of shark fins have been passed in several states, including Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and California.

1.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Ocean animals are at the top of the food chain.

B. Sharks play an important role in the ocean

D. Sharks are being caught and killed.

2.According to paragraph 2, sharks are in trouble because ______.

A. they often attack humans.

B. their food is being polluted.

C. they are being caught for food.

D. their habitat is being destroyed.

3.The underlined part “the practice” in Paragraph 3 refers to _______.

A. shark finning B. shark protection

C. the program of HIS D. the exhibit at Beijing Zoo

4.What do we know from the text?

A. There are 400 shark species in the United States.

B. It’s illegal to eat shark fin soup in the United States.

C. Most sharks are not interested in a human for dinner.

D. Sharks are very particular about their habitats and food
