Five Ways to Build Self-Confidence
Walk Faster.
One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, or important work to do. Even if you aren’t in a hurry, you can increase your self-confidence by putting some energy in your step. 【1】.
【2】One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to an inspiring speech. Unluckily, chances to listen to a great speaker are few. You can fill this need by creating a personal speech. Write a 30~60-second speech that focuses on your strengths and goals then recite it aloud whenever you need a confidence push.
Sit in the Front Row.
In school, offices and some other public places people always sit at the back of the room, 【3】This is for lack of self-confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this meaningless fear and build your self-confidence.
Speak up.
During group discussions many people never express their opinions because they’re afraid that people will judge them for their saying something stupid. 【4】By making an effort to express your opinions at least once in every group discussion, you’ll become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts.
Work out
Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has huge effect on self-confidence. 【5】By making your body fit and strong, you improve your physical appearance, refresh yourself, and learn something positive. (255words)
A. In fact most people are dealing with the same fear.
B. Walking 25% faster will make you look and feel more important.
C. In fact most people feel good after a walk.
D. If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel unattractive and less energetic.
E. Listen to an Inspiring Speech.
F. Create a Personal Speech.
G. Most people prefer that because they’re afraid of being noticed.
【答案】
【1】B
【2】F
【3】G
【4】A
【5】D
【解析】
试题分析:本文属于说明文,主要介绍了塑造自信心的方法。作者告诉我们你可以通过大声说出来、走路更快些、坐前排等方式树立自信心。
【1】B 根据第一段标题Walk Faster可知和步行walk有关,B和C项二选一,又因小标题Walk Faster建议我们要以更快的速度步行,故选B项“Walking 25% faster will make you look and feel more important.”与本段中心思想一致。
【2】F 根据本段第一、二句One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to an inspiring speech. Unluckily, chances to listen to a great speaker are few.可知听令人激励的演讲的机会不多,所以E项错误。再根据第三句You can fill this need by creating a personal speech,可知作者建议我们自己创造这样的演讲。故F项正确。
【3】G 根据本段标题Sit in the Front Row.作者建议我们坐在前排。根据横线前句offices and some other public places people always sit at the back of the room人们总是喜欢坐在后排,主要是因为缺乏自信,害怕被老师注意到。所以G项“Most people prefer that because they’re afraid of being noticed.”与上下文一致。
【4】A 根据横线前句“During group discussions many people never express their opinions because they’re afraid that people will judge them for their saying something stupid.”在讨论中人们很少发表自己的看法,因为他们害怕自己说出错话影响别人对他们的评价。而这时很多人共同的问题,故A项“In fact most people are dealing with the same fear.”符合上下文串联。
【5】D 本段的标题是“Work out锻炼”建议人们多锻炼保持时态健康。健康与自信有很大的关系。根据前句“physical fitness has huge effect on self-confidence”可知健康与人的健康有很大关系。故D项“If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel unattractive and less energetic”符合上下文串联。

Skin-to-skin Effort Aims to Cut Newborn Deaths
A social media campaign has been launched in China to cut down the number of newborns babies who die in the first 24 hours of life. The campaign, called First Embrace(拥抱),promotes skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby immediately after birth, a practice proven to keep the baby warm and help it to fight infections.
There are 16 million babies born in China each year, and approximately 150,000 of them die before they reach one month of age. 【1】 Zhang Shuyi, a researcher at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, said there was strong evidence for the First Embrace approach.

The public can participate by following the WHO on Weibo and joining the conversation. Schwartlander said, “We are targeting new parents, pregnant women and couples thinking about having a baby. 【4】 ”

【题目】Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
Recite and repeat in conversation.
When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
Ask the other person to recite and repeat.
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name mad pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.
Admit you don’t know.
Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say. “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”
Use associations.
Link each person yon meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note:“Vicki Cheng -- tall, black hair.” To reinforce your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.

【题目】阅读下列短文,选出最佳选项。
When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said seriously, “You let that be the last time you’ve ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mother’s words sound simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.
It’s not just something I believe in; it’s a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑微) they may be.
At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”
I’ve become vice president, but it hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too.
【1】What did the author do when he met Mr. Lee?
A. He talked with somebody else.
B. He was attracted by a dog.
C. He greeted him politely.
D. He ignored him.
【2】What kind of person is the author’s mother?
A. Optimistic. B. Kind-hearted.
C. Strict. D. Open-minded.
【3】How did the company founder reply to the author?
A. He inspired him. B. He played a joke.
C. He invited him to coffee. D. He gave him the seat.
【4】What does the author think of saying hello to people?
A. It’s a way to show sympathy to people.
B. It can build connections with others.
C. It’s a must to become a president.
D. It can bring him what he wants.

I’m tired and covered in dust. I’ve been digging all day and I’ll be doing the same tomorrow. Sound awful, doesn’t it ? But I’ve never had so many fun in my life. As an archaeology student, I have already knew something about the Qin Tomb and the terracotta warriors. Most Chinese children can tell you Qin Shihuang was the emperor first unified China. He was a brilliant ruler, and he was also a cruel man who killed thousands of people. When he became the king of the state, he immediately ordered workers to construct an underground tomb for him, which is said to contain great treasures. But, the actual entrance to the tomb has ever been found, nor has the tomb been opened. There are ancient descriptions of crossbows hiding at the tomb’s entrance. It’s said that if everyone steps across the entrance, the crossbows will fire.
