Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.

Some are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all.

However, others don¡¯t hold the same view. They think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class, breaking school rules, which may lead to them forming bad habits. Besides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies.

In my opinion, I¡¯d like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together.

Yours,

Li Ping

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person¡¯s intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins, they will very probably be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.

1.Which of these sentences best describes the writer¡¯s point in Paragraph 1?

A. To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.

B. Intelligence is developed by the environment.

C. Some people are born clever and others born stupid.

D. Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.

2.It is suggested in this passage that ________ .

A. close relation usually have similar intelligence

B. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligence

C. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence

D. people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence

3.The phrase ¡° at random¡± (Line 3, Para.2) means ________ .

A. purposely B. rationally

C. aimlessly D. independently

4.The best title for this article would be ________ .

A. What Does Intelligence Mean?

B. On Intelligence

C. We are Born with Intelligence

D. Environment Plays a Part in Developing Intelligence

Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing¡ªwhat do they all have in common? They are all important parts of British life. At least I thought so.

However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional characteristic of the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done for British bank Barclays.

Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During World War II, everyone had to queue up to receive their daily supply of foods. In fact, if you didn't stand up and wait in line with all the others, it was seen as uncivilized(²»ÎÄÃ÷µÄ)£®

The famous English double?decker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as a part of British line. Almost always, there is a queue to get on.

But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their houses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue.

Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?

¡°Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up purchases rather than wait their turn£¬¡± says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. ¡°Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.¡±

Perhaps I will have to replace ¡°queuing¡± with ¡°impatience¡± in my list of things I relate to the British.

1.What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain?

A. It was a product of the slow pace of life.

B. It was a long time tradition as old as the Queen.

C. It was considered a symbol of a civilized behavior.

D. It has made the British different from other Europeans.

2.According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because___.

A. they prefer shopping online

B. they follow the example of foreigners

C. British buses have more than one entrance

D. the Internet has changed their way of life

3.It can be learned from the text that________.

A. the British get impatient with queuing for long

B. the British have to queue to receive food

C. the British like to eat in foreign restaurants

D. the British prefer to take double?decker buses

4.The author's main purpose of writing the passage is______.

A£®to tell us the influence of the Internet on the British ways of life

B£®to compare the cultural difference between Britain and other countries

C£®to talk about the changes in the attitude to queuing in Britain

D£®to report his research on the British ways of life

1. I am sure that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to come out, just waiting to be used. Impress your friends with your new trick on how to ice-skate backwards with the help of these tips.

Stand straight

The first thing that you need to do is: stand straight. 2. , if you feel that you are falling backwards. Don¡¯t worry; this happens to all.

Confidence is what you need

The most important step while learning how to skate backwards is having enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this? By practice. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel that you are losing your balance, then scissor£¨×ö¼ôʽÔ˶¯£©your skates. 3. .

Maintain/keep speed

Try sculling£¨»¬£©with one skate while rolling in a straight line with the other. That is, keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke£¨»¬¶¯£©. Now bring the skate which you are using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process. Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling.

Now, try the same thing using the other foot.

4. .

Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.

Scull and be aware

While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that with both feet at the same time. 5. , but don¡¯t get so involved that you don¡¯t see where you are going. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

A. Don¡¯t you just love ice skating every winter?

B. While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards

C. Keep practicing this till you are confident about it

D. Increase your speed now

E. One must be brave enough to learn to ice-skate backwards

F. Concentrate on what you are doing

G. Just put your chin up and slightly bend your knees
