Americans use the term “college students” to mean students either in colleges or universities. Not only that, Americans almost never say “going off to university” or “when I was in university.” That sounds British. 1.
2. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living.
But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. 3.
Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities.
Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word “university” came from the Latin universities, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose. 4. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study.
The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true. 5. For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.
A. A college can also be a part of a university.
B. They offer more programs and do more research.
C. There are more universities than colleges in the USA.
D. Colleges and universities have many things in common.
E. Universities and colleges offer students different opportunities.
F. Instead, they say “going off to college” or “when I was in college.”
G. “College” came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning.

Skin-to-skin Effort Aims to Cut Newborn Deaths
A social media campaign has been launched in China to cut down the number of newborns babies who die in the first 24 hours of life. The campaign, called First Embrace(拥抱),promotes skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby immediately after birth, a practice proven to keep the baby warm and help it to fight infections.
There are 16 million babies born in China each year, and approximately 150,000 of them die before they reach one month of age. 1. Zhang Shuyi, a researcher at the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, said there was strong evidence for the First Embrace approach.
“When babies are cold, they are more likely to catch infections or have difficulty breathing,” she said,” 2. It provides direct protection against infection, promotes bonding between the parent and child and supports breast-feeding.” Health workers who shifted from the normal practice of separation to skin-to-skin contact have observed that babies are more pink, calm and comfortable.
The WHO has developed the First Embrace approach to help reduce newborn deaths across the Western Pacific region, including China. Bernhard Schwartlander , the WHO Representative in China, said, “As many as two-thirds of newborn deaths could be prevented using simple, low-cost methods, including the First Embrace.”
3. The WHO will be posting information about the campaign, and hosting online question-and-answer sessions with Chinese and international experts. The public can participate by following the WHO on Weibo and joining the conversation. Schwartlander said, “We are targeting new parents, pregnant women and couples thinking about having a baby. 4. ”
Just last month, a new research shows that child and mother health outcomes in Shanghai are equal to those in the USA and Canada. 5. Hopefully, the messages conveyed by the new campaign could help to bridge that gap.
A. The campaign has now been launched via Weibo.
B. Of that number, half die in the first 24 hours of life.
C. Skin-to-skin contact keeps a baby warm by transferring heat.
D. Those parents who lost their newborn babies can get supports on the platform.
E. In other parts of China, however, the statistics are like those of poor countries.
F. It indicates that related methods for health care and birth quality should be improved.
G. We also aim to involve health professionals in the importance of early essential newborn care.

I was at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bambolim, Goa, in the 1980s. On Inspection Day one year, an officer and his team from the Board of Education were coming to see how our school was run. As usual, our teachers asked us to be prepared.
At the end of the day, Mrs Sushila Tyaji, our Hindi teacher, walked in and told us that the inspector had come and quietly observed the class from the back door. He had also left an adverse remark! That was sad for us. Would we now be punished for having failed our teachers? There were no answers from Mrs Tyaji. Instead, she wrote the Hindi word “dukh” on the blackboard. And then she did something I have never seen a teacher do in my entire school life. She apologized.
“I am sorry for having taught you something wrong,” she said. “I missed out the dots between the letters ‘du’ and ‘kh’. The inspector told me this in the staffroom. I hope you will not make this mistake in future.”
That admission had a significant effect on me. If our teacher can say sorry to us when she is wrong, why can’t I? The incident helped me get rid of two common vices—ego and dishonesty.
Twenty-three years passed. I had to let my teacher know what that lesson meant to me. I recently located Mrs Sushila Tyaji using the Internet and went to meet her with my husband.
She smiled when she heard my story of how her small decades-old apology had transformed me for good. “It’s tough being a teacher. But every once in a while, when an old student comes along and tells us that we did something right, it makes up for everything else,” she said.

A. Honesty is the best policy
B. Comfort is better than rude
C. One can never be too careful
D. It is better to be safe than sorry
4.The author’s word during the visit made Mrs Tyaji feel ________.
