As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on.Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life.Financial experts say that every one also has their own belief of how to manage their money.According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are:the ant, the cricket and the snail.

  ◆The ant-works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks(股票)with low risk.

  ◆The cricket-fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance(保险).

  ◆The snail-lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(贷款)from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it.This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

For most of us, body weight goes up with age-an average of one pound a year after 25, according to the American Medical Association. What’s more, added weight is likely to be composed primarily of fat, not muscle. The reasons are as follows.

1)As we age, most of us become less active, and the body’s basal metabolism(基础代谢) rate slows a little each year. So our food-energy requirements-the number of calories needed to maintain weight-decrease. For example, a man might require 2500 calories a day at age 20, 2000 at 35 and only 1800 at 15.

2)Starting in our 20s, the proportion of muscle mass to body fat tends to decline. The body of an average 20-year-old woman is 26.5 percent fat. By 35, it is 33 percent, at 50, 42 percent.

3)As we grow older, we shrink-not from side to side, unfortunately, but from top to bottom. In our mid-30s, we begin to lose more bone than we make. One result: less height to hang our weight on, which makes us look thicker than we once did.

4)Exercising becomes harder with age. Our muscles can begin to lose strength and elasticity (弹性) as early as age 20. By 40, heart and lung power has begun to drop, and the body becomes more likely to be injured.

1.What is the passage about?

[ ]

A.The reason why old people usually weigh more than they once did.

B.The reason why added weight is likely to be composed primarily of fat, not muscle.

C.The reason why we become less active when we age.

D.The reason why our body weight goes up one pound: a year after 25.

2.What does the writer mean by“As we grow older, we shrink”?

A.As we grow older, we become shorter.

B.As we grow older, we become thinner.

C.As we grow older, we become more depressed.

D.As we grow older, we become more active.

3.Why does exercising become harder with age?

[ ]

A.Our muscles are older and weaker.

B.The possibility of injury increases.

C.Heart and lung don’t work as well as before.

D.All of the above.

4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.The body weight increases as one grows older.

B.The basal metabolism rate of an active person is always very high.

C.The food-energy requirement for one certain person is fixed.

D.We need less calories to maintain our weight as we grow older.

5.Where is this passage likely to appear?

[ ]

A.In a newspaper.

B.In a magazine.

C.In a novel.

D.In an advertisement.

阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

It's snowing again outside, and it's wonderful! Well, to me and a lot of children, it's wonderful. How often have you seen a child running to a window and looking at the falling snow with a big smile?

Now as we grow from children into adults, we often stop playing in the snow and having such fun, since we have to act the tough way instead of showing emotions(情感)like a child's joy.In the cold winter days, if you’re an adult and find yourself alone or with nothing to do, why don't you take up Bird Watching or Birding as it's often called? You basically need four items to do Bird Watching-a digital camera with a zoom(变焦镜头), a pair of binoculars(双筒望远镜), a field guide to birds in your area, and a notebook to record your sightings. When you go outside and see a bird, take a photo of it in zoom mode and listen to any sounds the bird makes.

When you finish bird watching for the day, and are back inside, sit down and look through the photos of the birds you took.Placing the photos on the computer makes them a lot easier to see.Record, in your notebook, all of the different species of birds you see, and any other information you want to record, like the types of sounds the birds made. You can look online for many bird watching groups to join, where you can chat and exchange photos with other bird watchers. The next time you’re finding the winter blues approaching because you have nothing to do, gather your items, head outside and do some bird watching. It's a great way to help beat the winter blues.

(1)

The writer wants to tell us ________.

[ ]

A.

what kind of joy snow brings to children

B.

what an adult can do on a cold winter day

C.

how to beat winter blues with bird watching

D.

how to do bird watching in winter days

(2)

Adults often stop playing in the snow because ________.

[ ]

A.

they are busy working

B.

they are not expected to show emotions

C.

they lose interest in snow

D.

they have other ways to have fun

(3)

What is NOT needed to do bird watching?

[ ]

A.

A digital camera with a zoom.

B.

A pair of binoculars.

C.

A guide who leads you to the field.

D.

A notebook.

(4)

The last paragraph suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.

we have to exchange photos to join a bird watching group

B.

it's hard for bird watchers to find someone with similar interests

C.

you can only join a bird watching group online

D.

the photos of birds we took may be attractive to others

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange or red? If you do, you must be an optimist (乐观者), a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays (灰色) and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined (意志坚定的). You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists (心理学家) tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference (爱好), and the effect (影响) that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don’t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful (开心的) and more comfortable (舒服的) than a dark green one, and a red dress rings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing (压抑). Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray.
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’t forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief.
