    3．The right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights of any democracy．Yet，for too long，too many of our fellow citizens were denied that right simply because of the color of their skin．
    Fifty years ago this week，President Lyndon Johnson signed a law to change that．The Voting Rights Act broke down legal barriers that stood between millions of African Americans and their constitutional right to cast ballot（投票）．It was，and still is，one of the greatest victories in our country's struggle for civil rights．But it didn't happen overnight．Countless men and women marched and organized，sat in and stood up，for our most basic rights．For this，they were called agitators（挑拨者） and un-American； they were jailed and beaten．Some were even killed．But in the end，they reaffirmed the idea at the very heart of America：that people who love this country can change it．
    Our country is a better place because of all those heroes did for us．But as one of those heroes，Congressman John Lewis，reminded us in Selma this past March，"There's still work to be done．"Fifty years after the Voting Rights Act，there are still too many barriers to vote，and too many people trying to erect（建立） new ones．We've seen laws that roll back early voting，force people to jump through hoops to cast a ballot or lead to legitimate （合法的） voters being improperly purged from the rolls．Over the years，we have seen provisions （规定） specifically designed to make it harder for some of our fellow citizens to vote．In a democracy like ours，with a history like ours，that's a disgrace．That's why，as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act，I'm calling on Congress to pass new legislation to make sure every American has equal access to the polls．
    It's why I support the organizers getting folks registered in their communities．And it's why，no matter what party you support，my message to every American is simple：get out there and vote-not just every four years，but every chance you get，because your elected officials will only heed（留心） your voice if you make your voice heard．The promise that all of us are created equal is written into our founding documents but it's up to us to make that promise real．Together，let's do what Americans have always done：Let's keep marching forward，keep perfecting our union，and keep building a better country for our kids．

    4．Toronto Public Library is conducting a program allowing users to access light therapy lamps at two branches，Malvern and Brentwood．
    Light therapy lamps are designed to imitate spring and summer light levels as a way to treat the"winter blues"or seasonal affective disorder （SAD），a type of depression with symptoms that include fatigue，anxiety，weight gain and sleep disorders．
    The Places to use it．
    The branches participating in the program are Malvern and Brentwood．These lamps are placed in the branch for use in the library．Each location has two lamps，available on a first-come，first served basis．The lamps cannot be taken out of the library．
    The reason to provide it through the library．
    Research by the Canadian Mental Health Association suggests that 2-3% of the general population of Ontario have SAD and another 15% have a less severe experience．
    Light therapy lamps can be expensive for most people to purchase．This service provides all Torontonians with the opportunity to use light therapy if they need it．
    The use of a light therapy lamp．
    Turn the lamp on and sit，read or work in front of it for 20-30 minutes．For sensitive users，gradual exposure is recommended．Sit about 2 feet away．Face the lamp and allow the light to shine on your face but not directly in your eyes．Do not stare directly into the light．Adjust the angle of the lamp to suit your position．
    The effect of the light therapy．
    Light therapy is considered to be safe．Side effects are rare and if they occur they are usually mild and can include nausea，headaches and/or eye strain．There nre no known long-term side effects of light therapy．If you experience discomfort，stop using the lamp and contact your doctor．
    The light therapy lamp should not be viewed as a cure，and other measures including staying fit，sleeping well and eating healthy are also very beneficial for treating the symptoms of mood disorders．Use of the lamp is at your own judgment．Toronto Public Library is not responsible for any health issues related to the use of the lamp．

    The robot was designed at the Georgia Institute of Technology．Charles Kemp of the Healthcare Robotics Lab is the senior researcher for the project．In a test run，Cody was able to remove 96% of a test subject's dirt-not bad for a robot．
    But don't go asking for Cody yet-he's still a model．Yet researchers believe that one day Cody may take the place of nurses for this task．Researchers say that Cody will give patients dignity and protect their personal information．I suppose that would depend on the patient．I'm not sure whether a robot using a camera would make me feel very dignified．
    Even so，I can appreciate the need．We don't have enough nurses to go around，and those places that are the most shorthanded，for example，nursing homes，are those that have the most patients who are unable to bathe themselves．Still，before I get there，I hope they think of a better way to solve the problem．
