    13．What if our babies could somehow tell us what they're thinking about，what they want，and what makes them unhappy？Robyn Holt，researcher for Baby Talk New Zealand，says they can．Holt heard about baby sign language through an advertisement and decided to go along to a workshop （研讨会）．
    "Sign language is something that's always interested me，and I thought，it could be really cool to try this with a baby because we are always guessing all the time what they actually want．"
    Holt started using baby sign language with her baby son Benjamin，now 12，and within two weeks he started to sign the sign for milk．She has since used it with her two younger sons Dominic，8，and Matthew，3．
    Baby sign language is nothing new：the practice （which is based on adult sign laguange） has been out in America for more than 30years．But it is enjoying a rebirth in New Zealand．
    The idea behind baby sign language is that babies do have the ability to communicate their needs if they are given the right tools to do so．Although many mothers develop an intuition （直觉） about whether their baby's crying is from hunger，tiredness，or pain，baby sign language creates a direct form of communication that unlocks the mystery．
    When babies are between 6-months and 12to 13-months，parents can begin to teach them sign language：use the sign for milk while feeding，and also talk about milk，so that the child begins to make the link （关联） in their brain．Then they can begin to add other signs，i．e．food，sick or pain．
    "I know of one parent．Her child was signing the sign for hurt by his month，and she realized his first teeth were growing．It makes life so much easier，"said Holt．

    4．Bloodsucking bed bugs （臭虫） have made a comeback in recent years．But as victims of affection have become increasingly desperate to rid their homes of the disturbing pests，many have only done themselves more harm．
    Bed bugs do not transmit disease or cause illness-but the insecticides used to make them do．A total of 111illnesses associated with bed bug-related insecticides were reported in seven states between 2003and 2011，the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention （CDC） said on Thursday．Most cases of poisoning were not severe，but the data included one death．
    That case involved a 65-year-old woman in North Carolina who died in 2011．After she complained to her husband about bed bugs，the CDC report said，he sprayed the inside of their home，including the baseboard，walls，and the area around the bed，with the insecticide Ortho Home Defense Max．He then applied a different product，Ortho Lawn and Garden Insect Killer，to their bedding．Neither insecticide is registered for use against bed bugs，the CDC said．That day，the couple also emptied nine cans of Hot Shot Fogger in their home．Two days later，they reapplied the insecticides and released nine more cans of Hot Shot Bedbug and Insect Killer．The woman then applied the insecticide Hot Shot Bedbug and Insect Killer directly to her arms and chest，and wet her hair with it before covering her head with a plastic cap．
    Two days later，her husband found her．She was taken to the hospital where she remained on a ventilator （呼吸器） for nine days until she died．The woman had had a history of health problems，including kidney （肾） failure，heart disease，high blood pressure and，and depression，the CDC report said．She had been taking at least 10kinds of medicine at the time of her death．
    Aside from the one reported death，most other cases of poisoning were mild．Commonly reported symptoms of exposure included headache and dizziness，breathing difficulties．

    5．Why do people feel so rushed？Part of this is a perception （认知） problem．Generally，people in rich countries have more free time than they used to．This is particularly true in Europe，but even in America free time has been inching up．Women's paid work has risen a lot over this period，but their time in unpaid work，like cooking and cleaning，has fallen even more significantly，thanks in part to dishwashers，washing machines and microwaves，and also to the fact that men shift themselves a little more around the house than they used to．
    The problem，then，is less how much time people have than how they see it．Ever since a clock was first used at a workplace to record labor hours in the 18th century，time has been understood in relation to money．Once hours are financially quantified （量化），people worry more about wasting，but tend to save or use them more profitably．When economies grow and incomes rise，everyone's time becomes more valuable．And the more valuable something becomes，the rarer it seems．
