My grandpa was used to dislike television. He thought that people spent too much time watching it. A lot of his friends, therefore, always talked about the sports programs and films on it. They never read many books or go out in the evenings so he refused to buy a TV set.

Last year he was 60 and retired his job. My father bought him a TV set, said “It will make you to learn some of the latest news”. It is quite true. He has watched all the news programs. He knows far much about the world now. And he reads more books, either. In fact, he thinks he may follow one of the Open University TV course next year. Perhaps he’ll get a degree when he is 65.

1.把was used中的was去掉

2.therefore 改成however

3.go改成went

4.retired和his中间加 from

5.said改成saying

6.把to learn中的to去掉

7.much 改成more

8.eithert改成too

9.many 改成much

10.course改成?courses

【解析】

1.1】be used to do…被用来做---;used to do…

6.6】固定搭配make sb.do sth.故把to learn中的to去掉

7.7】far 修饰比较级,他现在对世界了解得更多,故much 改成more

8.8】肯定句中用too表示“也”,放在句子末尾,故eithert改成too

9.9】many 改成much

10.10】one of 后加名词复数,表示“---之一”, one of the Open University TV course开放大学的电视之一,故course改成courses

Children's lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did?

It's difficult to look back on one's own childhood without some element of nostalgia(怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them.Playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents scarcely appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure.

These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed dramatically.Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn't time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today's boys and girls spend much of their time alone.Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home, inside.More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn't dream of letting their children play outside by themselves.

Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different.Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony(令人啼笑皆非的事情) is that so many ways of playing games are called "interactive”. The fact that you can play electronic games on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today.

Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.

1.What is the purpose of the direct question given in the first paragraph?

A. To show who the passage is written for.

B. To gather people's opinions on childhood.

C. To compare the childhood lives of two generations.

D. To get people's attention and lead in the topic.

2.Which is NOT a reason for the changes?

A. Families are smaller today.

B. Toys can be played by children alone at home.

C. It's too dangerous to play outside.

D. Parents worried too much about their children.

3.What has the writer focused on in the fourth paragraph?

A. Some games that young people play today aren't really good.

B. Computer and video games have replaced the board games.

C. Young people today shouldn't play electronic games.

D. Board games are much more interesting than computer games.

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984.I think it’s really brilliant.

The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either ) and Herman Melville.

Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in depth!

But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Fortytwo percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).

1.How did the author find his friend a book liar?

A. By judging his manner of speaking.

B. By looking into his background.

C. By mentioning a famous name.

D. By discussing the book itself.

2.Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?

A. Charles Dickens is very low on the topten list.

B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984.

C. The author admitted having read 9 books.

D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.

3.By lying about reading, a person hopes to ________.

A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable

C. learn about the book D. make more friends

4.What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers?

A. Favorable. B. Uncaring.

C. Doubtful. D. Friendly.

Mr. Eckerd at the end of the street was a different fellow with a different kind of house. He let kids from the neighborhood come to see his house, but only if they had written permission from their parents, and if he’d already spoken to the parents before.

What made it so different? He shared his home with rescued animals that the county couldn’t keep. He had the permission to have things like monkeys, large cats, and other strange creatures. His house had the ivy(常春藤)-covered brick wall and the iron gate across the driveway. Once you went inside, the hedges(树藤)lining the driveway were carved into the shapes of animals. There were other pretty plants on the grounds, too.

The old brick house held a lot of surprises. The double doors with the lion’s head door knockers opened into a large flat entryway. In the wooden board walls all around, there were fish tanks with colorful fishes. The ceilings were painted with scenes of plants and rare animals. Room opened off from there. Continuing down the hall, you came to a large courtyard, which had been caged in, partly open to the sky .A large group of tiny monkeys shook up and down trees. You had to walk through a caged tunnel into other parts of the house. They called out to whoever walked in, hoping for treats of fruits, nuts, and seeds. Behind that, the hall continued to a room full of snakes and lizards. It felt like a desert in that room, so dry and hot. It was not everyone’s favorite room, but it certainly was interesting. The final room was actually out back, and definitely not something to miss. It was much like a large glass bird cage or a greenhouse. It was there that you would usually find Mr Eckerd on a bench next to some carvings of jungle animals. He was watching the Bengal tiger that wandered back and forth inside the cage.

Mr. Eckerd’s house was the strangest and most unique place in town, a place very well worth seeing.

1.What was different about Mr. Eckerd’s house?

B. It was full of flowers and gardens.

C. It had wild animals inside and outside.

D. It was an amusement park.

2.What kind of live animals was NOT at Mr. Eckerd’s house?

A. Fish B. Snakes and lizards.

C. Monkeys. D. Elephants.

A. The tiger. B. The monkeys.

C. The birds. D. The snakes and lizards.

4.According to the story, ______seemed to be Mr. Eckerd’s favorite animal at his house.

A. The tiger. B. The monkeys.

C. The birds. D. The fish and reptiles
