The little boy

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.

Dust found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”

The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines(小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.

“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Para 1:

The little boy headed back down to the old man’s house.

The boy headed back down to the old man’s house. The thought of knocking at the old man’s door filled the little boy with fear, though, he still knocked on the door, waiting breathlessly. Finally, it opened, and out came the old man. Seeing the boy holding a well-wrapped dog figurine, he looked very astonished but still glared at him without a word. Determined to break the ice, the boy gave the old man the gift with a precious card attached, expressing his care. Deeply moved by all the boy did, the old man could say nothing but to hug him tightly, the tears of appreciation welling up. Out of gratitude, he bought a magazine from the boy and saw him off.

From that day on something changed inside the old man. He adopted a real live dog and treated him as his child. It seemed that it was the company of the dog that led the lonely soul out of darkness and loneliness. Gradually, he was willing to greet others and wear a bright smile, expressing his appreciation to life. Indeed, only when we open up the door of our heart, can we be bathed in the brilliant sunshine and enjoy the warmth of love and care.

The boy headed back down to the old man’s house. The dog figurine witnessed the little boy’s ending up opening the door once more. Upon seeing the boy for a second time, the old man couldn’t bring his anger under control any longer. “Haven’t I told you I need no magazines at all?” He snapped at the boy. “Yes, sir.” said the little boy with an uneasy expression on his face, “But I think you will like the figurine.” Then he handed it to the old man. Taking the figurine from the boy’s hands, the lonely soul was so astonished that words failed to convey his emotions, tears welling up in his eyes. “Thank you so much!” he said to the boy tenderly.

From that day on something changed inside the old man. The neighborhood always found the old man hanging out and smiling at everyone. He showed his precious collections to children who were now very willing to play with him. He used to collect figurines in memory of a real live dog which had kept company with him for a long time before it died. But now, he wasn’t drowned in the sorrows and loneliness anymore. He had realized the true spirit of life!

The boy headed back down to the old man’s house. 结合前文线索“The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt.” From that day on something changed inside the old man.( 从那天起,老人的内心发生了变化。) ,因此本段应该写老人的变化,比如与前文提及内容“When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.( 当他出来的时候,他不会和邻居或路人打招呼,只是怒目而视。)”

The boy headed back down to the old mans house. ,结合前文伏笔“The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt.” From that day on something changed inside the old man.( 从那天起,老人的内心发生了变化。)

Clara Barton, born on Christmas in 1821, is widely known as one of the most honored women in American history. She began teaching school when most teachers were men at that time. Later, she became one of the first women ever to be employed by the government.

Her career in helping the sick began when her brother David became her first patient. He fell down from the roof of a house when Clara was just 11 years old. She stayed by his side and looked after him for three years, learning how to give him all his medicines.

When the Civil War began in 1861, she immediately recognized that the poorly equipped soldiers needed help. Instead of waiting for others to step in, Clara collected necessary things on her own, asked the public for donations and learned how to store and distribute them to soldiers. She also read to the soldiers and wrote letters for them.

After the Battle of Cedar Mountain in northern Virginia in 1862, Clara arrived at a field hospital at midnight with a vehicle full of supplies. A doctor named Paul Smith at that hospital would later write, “I thought heaven had sent out an angel that night — her assistance arrived at exactly the right time.”

In 1869, Clara went to Europe and learned about the International Committee of the Red Cross. Upon her return to the United States, she successfully founded the American Red Cross. She led the organization for the next 23 years. Her last field mission (使命) as president of the American Red Cross was to help the victims of the 1900 Galveston hurricane. She did not retire (退休) from the American Red Cross until she was 83. True to her nature, Clara always went to where the need was the greatest.

Today, the American Red Cross continues the mission Clara started more than 100 years ago. With the help of thousands of volunteers, the American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters, as well as helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to all sorts of emergencies.

As a children's author and former English teacher, Abi Elphinstone has spent almost all of her life surrounded by the written word. Now an ambassador for the charity Coram Beanstalk, Ms Elphinstone plays a key role in championing the importance of literacy (读写能力)and the role played by its volunteers.

“There's so much demand on their time and it’s such an easy, quick-fix demand,” she said. “It's immediate satisfaction. Screens are loud and books whisper with quieter magic, but I think the effects are transformative and they are longer lasting than a Screen.”
