    4．Change is everything in the case of mobile phones．Recent research indicates that the mobile phone is changing not only our culture，but our very bodies as well．
    First，let's talk about culture．The difference between the mobile phone and the fixed-line phone，is that a mobile number corresponds to a person，while a fixed-line phone goes to a place．If you call my mobile，you get me．If you call my fixed-line phone，you get whoever answers it．

    Texting changes people as well．In their paper，"Insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS （Short Message Service） Text Messaging"，two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users：the"talkers"and the"texters"-those who prefer voice to text messages and those who prefer text to voice．
    They found that the mobile phone's individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality．Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts．This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well．
    Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language．There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone．There is the"speakeasy"：the head is held high，in a self-confident way，chatting away．And there is the"spacemaker"：these people focus on themselves and keep out other people．
    Who can blame them？Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera-phones intrude（侵入）on people's privacy．So，it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous．But perhaps you needn't worry so much．After all，it is good to talk．

    1．Choose a cause that's meaningful to you，and where you like the people．Determine how you can be useful-whether helping with strategic planning，inviting friends to a fund-raising event or serving on the board．If you'll be serving on the board，be clear about what will be expected of you so that you can fully devote yourself to it．
    2．Be open to opportunities to raise your hand and say，"I'll help．"When you know it，you could be in charge of a committee，and eventually perhaps serving as a board officer．
    3．Do pay attention to potential tutors on the board where you serve and among your friends and colleagues．Talk with other people who serve on boards to share experiences，lessons，and advice．
    4．Always remember the mission．It must be what you are always thinking about most as you take part in discussions and make decisions．
    5．Be generous with your time and your contributions．
    Once involved，you'll be surprised at how aware you will become of who's a thoughtful leader and who's not．And then your personal experience can ensure that books and various readings on leadership development will become more meaningful．
    Through my volunteer service since I was 10，I've seen first-hand the power of service in developing leadership．Most of the hundreds of business people I've trained and placed on boards have moved up to board leadership positions； the key has been that the match was right，and the board candidate was committed and ready to say，"I'll help．"
    Through service，you have tremendous opportunities to develop as a leader，become a more valuable professional where you work，and make a meaningful contribution in improving your community and the world．

    3．Although the word workaholic （工作狂） usually has a negative meaning，it is sometimes used by people wishing to express their devotion to their career positively．The"work"in question is usually associated with a paying job，but it may also refer to independent pursuits （追求） such as sports，music and art．A workaholic in the negative sense is popularly characterized by a neglect of family and other social relations．Similarly，people considered to be workaholics tend to lose track of time．
    Workaholism is an addiction，and it's not the same as working hard．Experts say the continuous work-related activity masks anxiety，low self-esteem （自尊），and privacy problems．Workaholics feel the urge of being busy all the time，to the point that they often perform tasks that aren't required or necessary for project completion．As a result，they tend to be inefficient workers，since they focus on being busy，instead of focusing on being productive．In addition，workaholics tend to be less effective than other workers because it's difficult for them to work as part of a team，they have trouble entrusting co-workers，or they take on so much that they aren't as organized as others．Workaholics are occupied with work all the time，which prevents them from maintaining healthy relationships，hobbies，or even take measures to protect their health．
    As with addictions to alcohol，drugs or gambling，workaholics'harmful behavior will continue despite advice from loved ones or danger signs such as worsening relationships．Poor health is another warning sign．Because there's less of social shame attached to workaholism than to other addictions，health symptoms can easily go unrecognized．In the U．S．and Canada，workaholism remains what it's always been：the so-called"respectable addiction"that's dangerous as any other．Workaholism in Japan is considered a serious social problem leading to early death，often on the job，a phenomenon called karōshi （过劳死）．
    As with other psychological addictions，workaholics often cannot see that they have a problem．Reasoning the workaholic out of the problem will generally be met with denial．Co-workers，family members and friends may need to communicate the effects of the workaholic's behavior to them．Indeed，mental treatment to cure a workaholic can successfully reduce the hours spent on the job，while increasing the person's productivity．Studies show that fully recovered former workaholics can accomplish in 50hours what they previously couldn't do in 80．
