Pool Safety Tips for Kids

On a hot summer day, there are few things that are more appealing than a nice cool pool.1. And it is completely relaxing. Of course, if you have children, there are certain safety measures you should take, whether you have a pool in your backyard or are going to a public pool.

Go swimming together. No person should ever swim alone. Though many people do, the simple truth is that it only takes a second to become injured or drown.2.Having someone there with you can make the difference between life and death. This is especially true for young children. If your child is under the age of 5, you should never allow them to swim out of arm’s length.

3.Kids love to chase one another through the water. But it is important that you emphasize to your children that at no time should they be running around the pool or pushing anyone. In the water, teach children not to jump on top of one another and to watch their surroundings, so that they do not accidentally knock into others, injuring them. Playing around in the pool is very interesting but dangerous.

Keep it locked. If you own a pool, you must have a locking gate around your pool. 4.Keep the gate locked at all times, even when you are physically in the pool. It is terrible for children to steal into the pool.

Know the way out.5.Make sure that they know where all ladders are, and that you teach them to use them for entering and exiting the pool safely. Although your child may be able to lift herself or himself out of the pool using the side, that is not the safest way to go.

Don’t play around in the pool.

Be sure to show all children the proper way to exit the pool.

Swimming under water is forbidden in the poor.

This is to prevent children from entering the pool without your permission.

Slipping into the water seems like the perfect way to deal with the heat.

Something sad happens every year.

Make sure kids know food should be eaten either before or after swimming.

In April 2014,the world's oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.

A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.

From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard

Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group,he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter,Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

“It was almost unbelievable,”Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face." Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1 .After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.

Previously, the oldest message found in a bottle spent nearly 98 years at sea and was

discovered in April 2012,according to Guinness World Records.

1.When Konrad Fischer picked up the bottle from the sea,

A. he thought it would bring him good luck

B. he noticed the postcard inside immediately

C. he decided to uncover the secret of the bottle

D. he wanted to throw it back into the sea at first

2.Why did Richard Platz throw the bottle with the message into the sea?

A. He expected his granddaughter could find the postcard.

B. He wished the finder would send the postcard to his home.

C. He believed his postcard would be kept secret at sea forever.

D. He thought he could make friends with the finder of the bottle.

3.What can be the best title for this passage?

A. The finding of a floating bottle at the sea

B. A one-century-old letter to a granddaughter

C. The world's oldest message in a floating bottle

D. The oldest Danish postcard in a floating bottle

科目:高中英语 来源:2016届四川双流中学高三12月月考英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft(手艺) no longer exists.

One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(持久性). “Homes in those days were well-built,” they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.

Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter(木匠) to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.

One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts(精确切割)on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.

The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.

1. Compared to the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters are__________.

A. more learned B. more successful

C. more imaginative D. more hardworking

2.What does the underlined word “they” (paragraph2) refer to?________

A. Carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.

B. Carpenters who have college degrees.

C. people who think that modern material is of low quality.

D. people who think highly of carpenters of old

3. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss? ________

A. People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairways.

B. It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.

C. Good carpenters still exist in modern times.

D. Modern houses last as long as the old one.

4.What would be the best title for the text? ________

A. Craft, Back to Life.

B. Is Craft Dead.

C. History of Craftsmanship

D. Carpenters Today and Yesterday
